I am using a dual monitor setup (two 21 LCDs) with compiz right this moment. It's worked great for awhile now. A caveat, though: I am running with an NVidia card, not an ATI one. I say this because it *may* be the difference. That is, I may not be using Xinerama and may instead be using NVidia's TwinView. The only reason I think that is because I have a three monitor setup at work and with two of the exact same NVidia cards that I have at home, compiz doesn't work due to the Xinerama issues. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
Re: which ATI card?
Last I checked Compiz doesn't play well with dual monitors, so you may have to give up that particular requirement. After that, any of the newer ATI Radeon HD cards should work well, although the very newest doesn't have specs released just yet. They'll all have HD video out with Free driver support when the Free driver developers get around to implementing the hardware decode circuitry support, the latest (3800 series) cards have built-in hardware decode called UVD. Video out is not high priority right now, though, so Free driver support may take a little while. Pick a card (prefer direct from AMD, IMO) with at least 1 port for video out (the AMD cards all have multiple) to make sure you can use that support when it becomes available. Your board is a nForce 500 SLI MB, so it has 2 PCI-Express x16 slots and 2 x1 slots (between the x16 slots). You should buy a PCI-x card, if you buy 2 SLI cards you can gang them together to act like one big dual-GPU card (some of the new cards, like the 3870, do this internally on one card), although I'm not sure if the drivers (binary or Free) support that yet. ==Joseph++ P.S. Your browser thinks the page is a gif because it ends in .gif and the server doesn't set the content type header (so few people really understand HTTP, /lament/) der.hans wrote: moin moin, As I posted last week, ATI's new cards are releasing with X drivers. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=amd_evolutionnum=1 This won't satisfy some of us as they're binary blobs, but the Free Software drivers can be used as well. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=amd_rv770_ossnum=1 Now they're available. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENEDEPA=0Description=HD+4850cm_sp=HomepageSL-_-AMD4000-_-http%3a%2f%2fpromotions.newegg.com%2famd%2f4000%2f270x120.gif Hmm, why does it think that page is a gif? I don't game, but I do want to have good compiz and video playback. I have a dual-head setup with 22 wide monitors as well. I would like something that will run cool at low power. That probably means I should completely ignore this line :). Video out would be cool. HD out with Free Software support would be awesome. product: M2N4-SLI vendor: ASUSTeK Computer INC. Were they on the correct side and rotating the correct direction? :) It'd be cool to have a split cube that rotates from the inside seam on the dual-head layout. ciao, der.hans -- # http://www.LuftHans.com/ https://LOPSA.org/ # If you're not learning, you're not living. - der.hans--- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss

Heh well you remember how I had rolled back my x.org to the one that comes with FC8 (because there wasn't at first an Nvidia driver that worked with the version of x.org that shipped with FC9), and that was the only way I could get Twinview working? Well Friday for fun I did a yum upgrade and let it upgrade everything including x.org, and the newest livna Nvidia driver seemed to be working...at least my dual vertical screens came up. I turned on the compiz stuff and it was working as far as the window dressings, and minimize/maximize animations. However, the wobbly windows was amazingly slow, so maybe my hardware/3d acceleration was not working? I didn't try the cube thing either. I ended up turning it off, but I should be able to turn it back on if you want a look-see. :) -Charles --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
Re: which ATI card?
I running openSuSE 10.3 and have an ATI Sapphire card. I do minor gaming and wanted something cheap, but could handle Quake III arena. I downloaded the drivers from ATI and they work perfectly. It has the ability to do dual head, along with SVIDEO out. Draw back, no dvi cables included $70 ATI Sapphire 3650 512MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102726 der.hans wrote: moin moin, As I posted last week, ATI's new cards are releasing with X drivers. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=amd_evolutionnum=1 This won't satisfy some of us as they're binary blobs, but the Free Software drivers can be used as well. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=amd_rv770_ossnum=1 Now they're available. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENEDEPA=0Description=HD+4850cm_sp=HomepageSL-_-AMD4000-_-http%3a%2f%2fpromotions.newegg.com%2famd%2f4000%2f270x120.gif Hmm, why does it think that page is a gif?
