All those measures are necessary and will help but it is still playing by the
rules set up by proprietory formats.

For a real change, the playground must change. like apple did in favour of
html5.

fuss is about
- being forced to use chrome.
- no real OSS alternative flash as of now

I would rather see flash being obsolete, than see a a competant OSS flash
alternative.

Well, for today's state, adobe-flash plugin is there on Linux. Worry is
about future revisions, particularly content that may not be backward
compatible.

Not sure whether chrome-on-linux would have newer flash revisions. (At
least that's how I understood it from Adobe saying they won't support
_Linux_.)

The catch ups happen and open/libre office is a good example, though:

- It becomes harder to win back users lost in the catch up phase.

- This ploy is deliberate and not incidental. It implies, more the OSS
options catch up, more incompatibilities will be created to ensure it
never really catches up. (Not only incompatible features, but _content_
that uses such features that a user would have inclination to consume,
would be poured upon the web.)

Worse for BSD users - no chrome either as yet. Currently Linux-flash
plugin works fine on BSDs through Linux emulation layer.

Do not know whether flash-through-chrome arrangement applies to Linux
version of chrome. Guess not since Adobe won't be supporting Linux at all
in future revisions.

Contrary to the articles saying mozilla is affected, all non Windows users
will be affected, if I understand it right.

Only when people will have to pay from their own pockets to buy Windows
would perhaps there will be a pressure to support open platforms. Namely:

- piracy should be in check

- pre-installed software's cost should be stated separately from that of
hardware and option to not buy the latter must be given.

- Wherever an institution buys software - whether your kid's school or
your dayjob, someone should be questioning the costs of proprietary
software when more cost effective and quality options are available.

(Argh.. they'll give it free to schools and colleges and deliberately
so. Spoil your future buyers at an early age so much that they won't
look for alternatives even if you pay them to do so!)

May sound like day dreaming. But of so many possibilities these are the
ones I found closer to being feasible.

Really? 5 years of security updates has been committed to. You got
Chrome and I am sure Gnash will catch up given the static state of Flash
at this point. I don't see any reason to fuss about.

If the setup is small, KOHA is actually an overkill.
You can consider other lightweight library management software.

A list was available on the UNESCO FOSS portal earlier. Should be there
with some updated/added software now.
