In my experience, which is quite extensive when it comes to getting i3
work on fedora with a nvidia GPU, is that screen tearing happens in the
presence of: 1. incorrect driver installation, 2. having multiple
versions of a driver installed at the same time, 3. having no driver at
all.

This is not enough info to tell why you are getting the same.  Please
specify: Fedora version, Which Desktop GNOME/XFCE etc and Graphic card..
