Thank you for the clarification. Once on the right page, it was
extremely easy to set up via the learning wizard, and works perfectly.
Thank you for a great plugin.

tanguy, it's good you already had 'heyu' installed, as the build
included in PowerCenter almost certainly would not work due to some
hard-coded directories. I've been working on the C code tonight to
allow the config file to override the directory defaults and hope to
release a new alpha in the coming days with good Intel 32-bit binaries
of heyu for Linux and Windows, and updated Perl code to add the new
config file directives.

Never mind...I just removed the old plugin from the plugins folder,

Ok, just noticed it, "All Tracks" doesn't yet work wit CB. But my

[SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC OK for a couple of days, then..

2008-03-03 Thread waldy

Hi,

I'm running SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 17695 - on SUSE 10.1, mplayer
v1rc2

After a couple or 3 days I can no longer play BBC streams. On the
player it reports rebuffering 0% for a moment. No mplayer processes
are running though.

Restarting squeezecenter & everything works OK, for a couple of days
or so.

Troubleshooting advice please. When it's working I get this on a
console which may give a clue:

Streaming: Launching mplayer -really-quiet -vc null -vo null

I've tried to implement the same behaviour as in the standard screens,
but I think there are still a few things which works differently in
Custom Browse. So when helping users that have Custom Browse installed
it might be important to check if they are using a Custom Browse based
menu or one of the standard menus.

Even worse, you don't get an event at all, but Safari processes this
itself, and then it does not even do it correctly, as you noticed on
the tooltip before...
I was thinking about being able to switch between the two default
features, but then the "All Tracks" is always just a click away, and
the descending pages typically also don't load very long. It's also
just a matter of "Artist" and "Year" only, isn't it? When I deliver the
plugin I will make the "switch to NowPlaying" feature configurable.

Now it's 5:
- Click "Artist" on the shortcut bar at the bottom of the screen
- Click the "E", jumps to the first artist with "E"
- Scroll to Ella
- Click Ella (the row or text, not the "+")
The first item is "All Tracks":

Bingo. No playlist clearing, no switching to "Now Playing"

Would make sense to have at least 10 more buttons. However, space is
pretty scarce. On the native app, NowPlaying will show up much faster.

Well, if iPod came with a manual - well, you don't read that, but
nobody seems to find that function (myself included, I only learned
about it from the developer's docs): Two finger scrolling.
I will add a disclaimer to iPeng before you can download about that...
BTW, it's in MY manual, though.
BTW, 2: There's at least one more feature on that screen you will not
find without the manual ;-)

Just be careful before you wish something you don't want. Both "play"
and "add" buttons everywhere would unfortunately also mean no "mix"
button anywhere because the screen space is limited.

Personally I think I would somehow like to switch between different
modes. When I'm listening to the music alone I tend to use the "play"
buttons always when changing what to play and this functionality is
partly missing in iPeng as you've seen, although album cover click
results in "play". On the other hand when I have other people listening
I do not want to interrupt what is currently playing, the result is that
I often tend to use "add" or even "insert" instead of "play".

pippin, would it be possible to detect and use the event when you hold
down the play button for a while in some way to make a single click
result in "add" but holding down the button a while result in "play",
or is the hold event limited to just showing the link tooltip ?

2008-03-03 Thread Sune

OK, being a "UI-is-something-you-use" guy, I haven't read the full
manual (but I have read bits and pieces).

Going for an artist, let me get the proper procedure for playing
everything from that artist straight, starting from the following
assumption:

- I currently have a playlist with 30 tracks running (e.g. a Random Mix
;-)
- I start from the "home" menu

Then what I do is:
- Touch "browse library -> Artists".
- Touch the "x" symbol next to "The Current Playlist" to get me an
empty playlist
- Touch "E" as in Ella Fitzgerald. Then wait.
- Scroll to I find Ella
- Touch the "+" sign. Wait to I see "all songs have been added"
- Check the playlist by clicking the "playslist " icon next to
"untitled playlist"
- Tap title of first song to play this playlist

Ok. This works. But I could have saved a bit of waiting time if it had
worked like it does as standard on my SB with my remote:

- Select "Music Library -> Browse Artists"
- Type "E", then it jumps to first artist with E
- Scroll to I find Ella
- Press "play"

That's it. 4 steps instead of 7...

Or did I miss something in the manual? (if so: Sorry!)

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with TrackStat/iTunes Update and iTunes

2008-03-03 Thread Sune

A few quick answers:

Setup:
-
Headless server: Mac Mini 1.42 GHz PPC, Mac OS X 10.5.2, 512 MB RAM
(cannot be expanded easily), SC 7 beta "as of today".

Headless, DJ'ing & iTunes:
-
Current setup is a bit clumsy: What I do is that I run all software on
the SB server and then export a playlist with my 4 and 5 star ratings
and then imports this on another system. It works ... but is slow and
clumsy. So I only do it once in a while. But it makes my SB much more
useful :-)

Plugins disabling
-
Could try that. However, music is playing and my wife is happy. So no
disturbances in the setup tonight :-) The ultimate goal is to make her
a happy SB user as well (quite far from it right now... ).

/S.

P.S. One more challenge that I'm facing is the lack of an
"Auto-OK/Cancel-to-dialogs" on Mac OS X. Any suggestions welcome, as
dialog boxes seems to pop up once in a while from iTunes / MusicIP
Mixer

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with CustomBrowse and iPeng

2008-03-03 Thread Sune

It's great with this quick ping-pong. It makes it fun to give feedback
in a forum - I almost feel like I participate in the development,
although all I do is whine ;-)

Anyway - one thing caught my eye here:

There is no standard "play" buttom in the iPeng setup, you say? There
definately should be, as this is the single-most important feature of
my SB - that is, to PLAY the music!

But I am a bit confused here. Everywhere else in the iPeng skin there's
a "play button". It only seems to be in the CustomBrowse plug-in menus
that it's missing...and only in the iPeng skin.

I don't really know what this means (since I do neither side of the
programming), but for sure it should be there all over CustomBrowse - I
can see that the "Play" is there when I use CustomBrowse with another
web-interface (e.g. Default).

Anyway - currently the result is: I simply don't know how to get
anything from the CustomBrowse menues to actually play except if I add
them to the current playlist...and then wait

I'll try modifying the XML files. However, this is on the limit of what
I can do. If a mod to the XML doesn't work, I don't know how to
troubleshoot it

As always - keep up the excellent work.

You need to configure MusicIP and configure SqueezeCenter to perform
scanning with MusicIP and perform a full rescan. A good way is to
ensure that you have MM icons beside the artists/albums/tracks on the
standard browse pages in one of the other skins.

When you have MM icons in the standard skin and then launch the M icon
in iPeng, you will get a MusicMagic entry in the mixer screen launched
from Custom Browse. When you hit the MusicMagic entry you will get into
the web interface of the MusicMagic plugin which shows tracks in the
mix, I think this screen contains the standard browse controls which
means it only contains a + on the iPeng skin.
The page shown is based on this template:
Slim/Plugin/MusicMagic/HTML/EN/plugins/MusicMagic/musicmagic_mix.html

My bitmap code is copied from an earlier version of the default skin,
it might have changed since then. Should I change the bitmap size to
the same as the one you used in the standard iPeng browse pages ?

One reason Custom Browse is slower is because it runs more advanced SQL
statements and also run several SQL statements on some of the browse
pages. Custom Browse is currently primary optimized for flexibility,
not for speed. But I'm sure there are optimizations possible which
won't affect the flexibility, I just haven't focused on optimization
yet.

How is this expected to work? The default mixers Custom Browse gives me
(e.g. Random Mix, I don't have MusicIP) do exactly what you expect. I
don't even have a "+" on the mixer screen.

I can confirm, that CustomBrowse is actually slower on long lists than
the "native" iPeng screens, even though I don't fully understand, why
that is, actually to me it looks like it's the bitmaps that are slow.
Are you sure you use the same format that SC is caching?

I think it uses the same browse pages as the standard browse mechanism
in iPeng, so the result is that you don't have any play buttons just
add buttons.

In the Custom Browse/Mixer directory there is a number of XML files, I
think you should be able to change the mixurl element so you add
"&p0=playtracks" at the end. For example:

Code:

  plugins/MusicMagic/musicmagic_mix.html?album={itemid}&p0=playtracks

If I've interpreted the code correctly this should play the mix
directly in step b in your description. However, I might be wrong since
I currently don't have a way to test this.

You will need to restart SqueezeCenter after you have saved the changed
XML file.

>From your description it sound like the setting "SqueezeCenter
Settings/Interface/Items per page" is set to high. I suspect this is
the major reason for the performance issues.

Besides this the Custom Browse menus is probably a bit slower than the
standard browse menus. The reason is that they do a bit more things to
give the flexibility they have, they also currently retrieve some
information that isn't even shown in the iPeng skin. Some of this will
improve in future versions of the Custom Browse plugin, some will
remain since I like to keep the flexibility.

The sorting options and artwork switch available in the other skins for
Custom Browse hasn't been added to the iPeng skin, this will allow you
to not show the artwork icons.

Would it be possible for you to try to use one of these plugins
individually to check if they work alone ?
It should be enough if you just disable the plugins you don't want to
use in "Server Settings/Plugins" and then restart SlimServer and try if
it works any better.

I don't think Custom Browse + TrackStat should have any problems
because that's a configuration I'm using myself together with a lot of
other users. However, I haven't used iTunes Update together with
TrackStat, so there could be some compatibility issues between them.

Is the computer running slow all the time or is it related to that you
do something in the SlimServer user interface or on the remote control
?

If I remember correctly iTunes Update and TrackStat has a debug logging
parameter in their sections under "Server Settings/Plugins", you could
try to enable this to see if you see anything strange in the log. If
you are using SqueezeCenter 7.0 the debug parameter is in
"SqueezeCenter Settings/Logging" instead.

Are you using SlimServer 6.5 or the SqueezeCenter 7.0 beta ?

Unless you like to do it yourself I plan to provide a similar patch
also for AlbumReview.
However, I thought would be a good idea to wait until you have had the
chance to look at the first patch.

So you've got a headless computer with iTunes on it? Win or Mac? Do you
export the iTunes database from there and import it on your MacBook?
Or do you use a separate DAAP server on your headless system?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with CustomBrowse and iPeng

2008-03-03 Thread Sune

iPeng is in general a bit slow, but I suspect the iPod Touch browser to
be the issue here.

However, where I really notice this is with CustomBrowse. Wonder why -
perhaps it's the rendering of the long menus (some takes forever to
scroll through). I have 1000+ albums and approx. as many artists...this
generates VEEERY long menus with my current setup (perhaps I need to
change something?).

No matter what: It would undoubtly speed up iPeng, if I could turn off
artwork during the "browse" mode, so I only had artwork on the Now
Playing screen (I do not need it before, anyways).

And now back to the matter: Anyone with input reg.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with TrackStat/iTunes Update and iTunes

2008-03-03 Thread Sune

Hi there,

A small note here: There is an active mode for iTunes Update which
sends the info back to iTunes. This seems to work fine.

Only thing that does not work is that the combination of iTunes Update
/ CustomBrowse / TrackStat seems to be capable of slowing my server to
a grinding halt, resulting in jerking music from a server that is
connected directly to the SB via Ethernet. Not nice!

However, I really do like that I can rate my music from my SB, since I
am running on a headless server, and use my rated music for DJ'ing (so,
when I hear a new cool track from one of my 10-box swing-music sets that
I rip to my headless server and play back using my SB, then I'll rate it
on the fly and I'll see this track as rated in iTunes and consider using
it for DJ'ing at a swing-dance event, using iTunes on a MacBook).

My experience says: that's iTunes Update (but my experience is PC only.
And the reason there clearly is iTunes (as I can see from the CPU
utilization). So if you don't need that... Will have to manually manage
Artwork and have separate rating in iTunes and SC, though... That's what
I do (easy to say: my DB is on a NAS and thus has no iTunes integration
anyway, I only have that on my test system).

What exactly do you mean by "slow"? Slower than the "normal" iPeng
browse screens? Or just slower than the IR remote?
The web I/F in general is slower on the iPod/iPhone than on a PC since
rendering on Mobile Safari is slower, especially JavaScript. Also
loading Artwork takes it's time. If you want to get rid of that you
will have to wait for a native app (in the making).
Make sure you have a fast server and a fast WLAN connection, both helps
a lot.

I actually don't see a reason, why CustomBrowse should be much slower
than the "native" iPeng screens, since AFAICS the code uses the same
optimizations and is generally not more "heavy weight" (in fact it much
more lightweight right now) than the "native" iPeng code so the same
caching should apply. Erland uses a bit bigger Cover Art than I do
(50x50 vs. 46x46) which on a slow server should improve performance and
on a fast server hurts performance a little bit (the 50x50's are cached
by SC but the 46x46's are smaller, I believe mainly due to the
rendering algorithm rather than the size difference and I use a
"fit-to-size" background image as an artwork placeholder that loads
with the style sheet but all of these differences should not be in
excess of 10, maybe 20%.

If you are not sure, try iPeng from a PC or MAC browser (Safari
preferred, or Firefox, IE doesn't work). It should be pretty fast
there.

If iPeng is actually slower than the Default skin, please report back,
that should not be the case since it has reduced content (and much less
JavaScript).

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with TrackStat/iTunes Update and iTunes

2008-03-03 Thread Sune

Hi all,

Could be that this is in the TrackStat documentation, but I am a bit
confused, so better ask:

I'd like to

a) Rate my music from my SqueezeBox (e.g. through iPeng..or directly on
the Box)
b) Have these ratings added to my iTunes library automactically
c) Have all ratings from my iTunes library displayed on the SqueezeBox
/ the iPeng skin.

I've got this to work using TWO plugins:

1) TrackStat (for the iPeng integration)
2) iTunes Update (for the actual iTunes integration)

and it seems to work (have to experiment more to confirm that ratings
works two-way)...but it also seems that my system is slowed a lot by
this.

Can I do it using just the TrackStat plug-in? I like, but am not dying
to have, the album cover integration provided by iTunes Update.

Thanks for all input provided

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with CustomBrowse and iPeng

2008-03-03 Thread Sune

Hi all,

I know this may be hidden somewhere in the extensive documentation for
the CustomBrowse plug-in...but I dare to ask anyways:

When generating a new mix using MusicIP Mixer using the iPeng skin on
my iPod Touch, everything works as expected.

But...how do I get the generated mix to play in one easy step?
Currently what I do is that I

a) Clear the current play-list before starting the mixing
b) Do the mixing
c) Add this to the current playlist
d) Panic, hunt around for some way to make that new playlist play using
iPeng. Usually ends up on the "now playing screen" and press "play", but
this seems very non-intuitivie

I'd like to shorten this procedure to "b" and then a "play" command
that makes the new mix start playing, replacing whatever other playlist
I had going (this is how MusicIP Mix'es works when activated directly
from my SqueezeBox w/o the use of CustomBrowse).

Can I do that through iPeng? How?

Kind regards

Sune / Denmark

Note: Using CustomBrowse on iPeng seems a bit slow when donethrough
iPeng instead of directly on the SqueezeBox, but I cannot tell if it's
iPeng, CustomBrowse or the SqueezeCenter web-server that is causing the
slowness...I do suspect it's the whole web interface for SC7 that's on
the slow side...but that's a different story).

Do you think I still remember? That part would need a bit of rework...

But the patch does look good to me - I'll have to give it a try later today (or
this week). I guess AlbumReview might be enhanced in a very similar way (it's
the same approach there, but it's a bit simpler in general).

> The functionality provided with the patch is that urls like this work:

The next version might support index.txt, too, for cases where you'd prefer
text only display ;-).

It looks good to me. It's simple enough to be included! Thanks a lot!

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Can I change long filename in Wiki Radio?

Someone has added a file to the 'WikiRadio list'

filename (alternative radio broadcasting from San Francisco.opml) that
messes up the formatting of the web-page and (in firefox) is preventing

(e.g. the creator of the file!) have any objections if I changed the
name of the file to something shorter (e.g Alternative San Fran Radio)?

A good way to do this, without the need to have your own website to host
the opml file and assuming your are happy to share with the list with
the community is to upload your opml file to the 'WikiRadio list'

advantage of making the list accessible via WikiRadio (in SC7 this is
