2.5 is the latest version of AlienBBC.
There are no betas later than this.

The various bug fixes and the 2.4 betas of this thread were merged and
released as 2.5

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Problem with softsqueeze on iMac

2009-06-01 Thread fbal

Hello,

I've just installed the latest versions of squeezecenter and
softsqueeze on my iMac (10.5.7). Everthing seems to work fine except
that I've got a poor quality sound with some kind of echo. iTunes and
all other audio applications work fine. So it's really a problem with
slimcenter/softsqueeze. Any idea about the problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

Franck

Yes - if you have the beta instralled - it is probably best to remove

Does the recipe functionality work in the 1.8.4 release of Sugarcube?
I've added a new recipe to the recipes.xml file but it's not appearing
in the dropdown list. I can retrieve it with
http://localhost:10002/api/recipes so I know the API has got the
refreshed list.

I've restarted everything, so is the old list being cached somewhere?

Would it be possible to add functionality to read from the API to set

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-06-01 Thread mvordeme

What is this? Yesterday, I set the library rescan time to 0:30 and
switched the rescan on. After that, I have not been able to hibernate
the server any more. SPC would not hibernate the server at all, and when
I used the windows controls, the server would wake up again as soon as
it was hibernated.

I now switched the rescan off again, and it seems that I can now
hibernate the server again, but selecting Hibernate to SqueezeNetwork on
the Controller does not work (and may have not worked at all before). In
the log files, I keep seeing the following lines although the alarm
should no longer be there:
Code:

[09-06-01 13:24:45.0011]
Plugins::SrvrPowerCtrl::Alarms::ExecRTCWakeForAlarmCmd (341) Now trying to
execute command: c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /C start /B scpowertool.exe
--wakeup=1243895280 --quiet --log
  [09-06-01 13:25:45.0005] Plugins::SrvrPowerCtrl::Util::__ANON__ (353) Now
trying to execute c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /C start /B scpowertool.exe
--hibernate --log

The timestamp should be -Mon, 01 Jun 2009 22:28:00 GMT- which is two
minutes before -Tue, 02 Jun 2009 00:30:00 CET DST- and thus consistent
with my earlier rescan settings.

I will now wake the server up again and see whether it will at least go
to sleep if I let it alone ...

What is your current offset from UTC? 1243895280 is Mon, 01 Jun 2009
22:28:00 UTC.

Are you sure you don't have any alarms set or have the SrvrPowerCtrl
End-of-day feature set? Those are the only two conditions that ought to
trigger the setting of a wake-up.

How are you scheduling the library rescan? Are you using the "Rescan
Music Library" plugin?

I'm not doing anything in SrvrPowerCtrl to directly interact with the
Rescan Music Library plugin. I suppose I ought to, though. But as it
stands now, your server ought to go to sleep and sleep right through the
rescan time...unless you've scheduled a SrvrPowerCtrl End-of-day custom
action.

That's how I would do it: enable a custom end-of-day script to run at
00:30. Set the end of the EOD period to 0:35. This script can be
anything...but basically you want something that does nothing. That way
the server will wakeup for the "nothing" EOD event and the Rescan plugin
will then do it's job.

Alternately, you could remove the Rescan plugin from the picture and
have your EOD custom script trigger a rescan via the CLI.

But in any event, I should see if I can figure out how to parse the
Rescan plugin prefs and set an auto wakup based on the settings there.
Thanks for the idea. That's two in two days from you. Keep going.
Don't be shy!

PS: there is a fundamental difference between windows and linux in
terms of how these hardware wake-ups are accomplished. In the linux
realm, we're programming the hardware RTC wake alarm directly and this
works very reliably. Under windows, we're running a program in the
background that schedules a timer with the windows kernal, asking that
the system get woken up to service that timer at the appropriate time.
In my experience, this is not so reliable...at least compared to the
linux method, anyway. I haven't been able to get this to work at all
yet with Windows 7.

So, on a windows server, if you put the system to sleep via
SrvrPowerCtrl and then manually wake it back up again via the power
button, that background wait-until-wakeup task will still be running and
may potentially interfere with a subsequent suspend / wake schedule.
Use the task manager to make sure there are no old SCPowerTool.exe
instances running before you test again. That, or reboot your server.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-06-01 Thread mvordeme

I am sorry if I get a few things mixed up. The SqueezeCenter
configuration confuses me mindless - and I don't think that I am easily
confused by technology. I did not even know that the rescan was done by
a plugin. Fact is that the server could be hibernated again after I
disabled the rescan, so the plugin might do some scheduling itself. But
how am I to know? It comes pre-installed, so I did not read the
documentation - not to mention that I cannot find any.

I actually configured an end of day action for 0:30 (I am on CET DST
which is GMT+2), so that is the alarm that keeps popping up in the logs.
The only thing the EOD action does is to shorten the timeout, but I may
have a look at the CLI and follow your proposal.

Meanwhile, I have found out a bit more about the remaining hibernation
problem. It may have to do with the fact that I do not run SqueezeCenter
under an administrative account. When I issue the command
-scpowertool.exe --hibernate --log- as an administrator, the server
hibernates immediately. When SPC runs the command (I see it in the log),
nothing happens. It will make the server hibernate eventually if I
configure a timeout in the server's energy options (wasn't that against
your recommendation?), but although it sometimes hibernates the server
directly after the command from SPC, it sometimes appears to wait for
the configured timeout before hibernating. I have searched the internet
for information on how to authorize a user to hibernate the server but
had no success.

Missing access permissions could as well be the reason for the rescan
problem. In order for SCPowerTool to write a log file, I first had to
give permission to the SqueezeCenter user. If the rescan plugin should
try to write a file with the last successful scan timestamp, it would
most probably fail. That could be the reason why it does not let the
server go to sleep.

Is this making any sense at all?

Yes, it is. Which flavor of windows are you running?

IMHO, the simplest approach on a windows server is to run SqueezeCenter
as a service under an administrative account. If you make the
appropriate settings in SqueezeCenter->Settings->Advanced->Security,
there should be few, if any security concerns with this.

In those security settings, I usually set the "Allowed IP Addresses" to
"127.0.0.1,192.168.1.*". Make sure the second address range there
matches your subnet...i.e. if your client machines on your network get
addresses like "192.168.0.xxx" from your router's dhcp server, then make
the "Allowed IP Addresses" equal to "127.0.0.1,192.168.0.*".

Then, make sure you have the CSRF protection level set to Medium or
higher and set "Block Incoming Connections" to "Block."

That ought to protect the service from any sort of casual attack.

Lots of potential problems just go away if SqueezeCenter can have
Administrative credentials. Or, experiment with creating a new user
group that has just enough permissions to get the job done without being
a full blown administrator...and make make the squeezecenter user a
member of that group and run SqueezeCenter under that account.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-06-01 Thread mvordeme

It is Windows Home Server, and I think technically there should be no
problem with running SqueezeCenter under an administrative account. It
just makes my old Unix admin instincts scream in panic.

The only way of granting permissions to a user account I can find is to
add it to groups, and that does not appear to work as expected. I tried
to authorize a user for remote desktop access by adding the account to
the remote desktop users group, and it did not work. But even if it did,
I have no idea how to authorize an account for hibernation of the
system.

There is unlikely to be a way for the Plugin to directly communicate
with LightsOut. But we might be able to come up with a small windows
executable that would do the jobdepending on the communication
method the LightsOut developer wants to pursue, e.g. sockets, named
pipes, etc. This windows executable could be called as part of the
shutdown/suspend/hibernate process and could essentially tell LightsOut
"OK...SqueezeCenter is idle...power down if you want to."

But, may I suggest you give some thought to the mechanism here? Who
should do the shutting down? LightsOut? SrvrPowerCtrl?

If LightsOut is in charge, then the above mechanism should work. If
SrvrPowerCtrl is in charge, then LightsOut could simply create a
c:\windows\temp\scp-block block file when it sees the server as "busy"
and delete that file when it sees the server as idle.

As far as I understand, LightsOut is a full-blown energy manager which
handles client connections as well as backup scheduling. I think
LightsOut should be in charge and SPC could connect in as an extra
client. If I had to design an interface, I would come up with three
methods:
- registerClient (inhibit hibernation)
- deregisterClient (allow hibernation)
- hibernate (request hibernation skipping any timeouts if possible)If a CLI was
available, this could be simple, but you are probably right
that it is not. I promise I will register in the home server forum,
tomorrow, but for now I need to get some sleep.

Thanks for all your help so far.
