Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Nominations for Recommended 3rd Party Plugins

2009-06-16 Thread jdc

Is the list of plugins being updated with new ones as they come out?

If so, I would definitely nominate the new xm radio plugin by Neil.
It's a pretty big refresh, tested to work against 7.3-7.4, with new
sync'd output, etc. Very good stuff. I know xm online support was one
of the reasons I originally bought a boom, and then two... and vice
versa, why I now pay for their service.

Thanks,

jd

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I think many of my plugins will die in
their current form before the new schema is introduced. The new schema
means major changes and it also looks like it's going to introduce
things like multiple libraries, smart playlists and flexible browsing.
This means that the need for third party plugins for these things are
less than today.

It has been stated in the Development section of the forum that SQLite
will be introduced in 7.4/8.0 but the new schema won't. So due to this I
feel that waiting for the new schema won't work since this might take a
year or even more in the worst case.

Changing to SQLite without changing the schema should be fairly simple
for most functions. Updating the code is just a matter of getting the
time and inspiration to do the necessary work.

If Logitech decides to introduce the new schema without also adding
some basic support for smart playlists and ratings there is a need for
third party plugins for this. However, before I spend a lot of time
upgrading the currently plugins I like to see what Logitech is going do
in the core related to this.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-06-16 Thread epoch1970

I tested on OS X 10.5.7. It works well, a few details:

http://code.google.com/p/srvrpowerctrl/ (and the local help page?) Wrote:
 Requirements:
For OSX, the plugin requires the 'sudo', 'shutdown' and 'pmset'
 commands.
These commands come standard, many OS X users do not know Terminal
exists. I'd remove this mention to avoid possible confusion.

Certainly a side-effect of the age of my system install (and SC
install, I guess), but my 'cache' directory resides in
~/Library/Caches/SlimServer/ (in fact I also have
~/Library/Caches/SqueezeCenter, but it's only used by iTunesArtwork.)
This makes the install process break, since $script uses
Library/Caches/SqueezeCenter.
I relaunched the script manually, as is, from Library/Caches/SlimServer
and the install went well.
So maybe this is worth a footnote in the readme ?

I had to reboot the machine entirely to get sudo to come to effect.
Before that I had weird system messages in the console saying that my
very own uid wasn't to be found in /etc/passwd.

The block/unblock on login works if the server's CLI is on the standard
port. For my latest experiments I had moved the CLI port to , and
the side effect is that block/unblock don't operate.
Perhaps you want to mention this in the install doc ?

And of course, once everything is in place, the machine sleeps, wakes,
reboots, like a clockwork.

I don't know how many mac users are out there, but I think they've been
properly served and I expect they'll let you know.

I'm working on a fix for this right now. If, within the plugin, I can
figure out the plugin's real, actual installed location (which, oddly
enough, isn't that easy in perl) then, if the user is willing to enter
their system account password into a form on the help/setup page, I
*should* be able to do a system call something like this:

system echo $password | sudo -S path_to_setup_script ;

..and, voila, setup complete. And all without having to make the users
do any of that icky terminal stuff. Mobetta, don't you think?

The real question is: will users feel comfortable typing their system
username and password into a web page of a plugin they've just
downloaded from the internet? For those who know better, the answer
will be NO! So, for those folks, I'll need to provide the terminal
instructions as well.

I think a lot of mac users will choose the easy way... Full disclosure
on the scripts is very nice in any case.

But if I were you, I'd ask what the Slim/Logi people think about this:

a) I think the plugin is a serious candidate for the recommended
plugins roster in Extensions Installer. IMO, they won't promote its use
if they see security risks in the installer design.
b) I wonder how many will be in my case ? Besides, I think I have read
in the Beta thread that Michael has been reworking the paths for SBS on

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2009-06-16 Thread rme

I was looking more into the stream.mp3 for (hopeful) streaming within
ipeng to play on iphone.

According the SC help remote streaming, you need to allow for storing
the username and password of the SC somewhere as it needs
http://username:passw...@localhost:9000/stream.mp3. Or at least need to
handle a popup prompt for the username password from SC.

Also, my prior suggestion of defaulting the ipeng players stream
bitrate limiting to 64kbs for submission raises one point where I think
that everytime you launch the stream, it will revert back to the 64k as
SC sets up a player based on the launching MP3 players IP address which
will obviously be constantly changing with an iphone when on the
cellular network. So is there a way to store the default stream bitrate
limiting option in ipeng, save any new value that we set it to for
future launches and pass that new defaulted value every time ipeng
launches a new stream? We probably would need to store volume
adjustment\replay gain and Preamp volume control as well. Not sure if
we also need lame quality level and mp3 streaming method settings or
others as well.

- Mac users will give their trust, because of the SB brand, and
because they are not used to get a beating every time they do something
with their computer.
- And your code could be modified overnight (by you or anyone with
access to the SVN repo on google) to store the password, send it over
the net, etc. Entering the password in the context of a web browser
makes it prone to hijacking.

Unless the recommended plugins are sanctified through an MD5sum or

Yes, if someone gains unauthorized access to the google code page, they
could, in fact, tinker with the code and wreck havoc. However, keep
these facts in mind:

Uploading to google code requires two passwords: the google code
account password which can be made arbitrarily strong by the user and a
2nd password randomly generated by google code which is _very_ strong.

Also, the repo file for the plugin contains a sha value which the
extension downloader checks against the downloaded zipfile at install
time.

This isn't perfect security, by any means, but I think it covers the
basics.
