Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Plugin Suggestion: Vinyl Emulator

2011-05-23 Thread Mnyb

Interesting link, but to make a really good vinyl emulator you have to
do more,

For example frequency dependent channel separation, it's about 20 dB in
the midrange with some pickups. ( thats why it can have a deeper but
narrower soundstage

It has a warp emulator, but what about the constant wov and flutter
component + the mech noise belt or direkt drive ?

Low levels of acoustical feedback ?

Lowest bass in mono ?

phase anomalies ? Typical distorsion components from pickups , more
second order thd ?
Impulse behavior. A pickup chooser in the plug in ?

Frequency response, im distorsion etc , moving coil step up transformer
?

But imho even then it will be a novelty that people try once and then
forget abaout.
And the way modrn CD's and downloads are mastered, you probably end up
with the worst of both worlds.

What about an open reel tape machine emulator, if it emulates a good
one it will be a subtle effect.

But you rise a more general q about a dsp plugin engine for sbs, thats
more interesting.
the ones whe have are inguz and brutefir, but what about a more general
purpose one ?
that could take plugins for Eq or simple tonecontrols, loudness
balance, and novelty stuff as the vinylemulator .

IMHO, the main advantage of vinyl is that the albums were mastered
without all the crap they do today; especially loudness. More dynamic
range sounds better on a good system.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Squeezebox boom + spotify help

2011-05-23 Thread drmushroom

Hi

I am new to the squeezebox and got a boom recently, thinking I could
upgrade my spotify to a premium account and have music streaming
perfectly - seems i was wrong.

Well after a bit of searching i have got here in the 3rd party aps with
people saying i can use a 3rd party app to use spotify on my boom.

Now;

1) Is this possible
2) How do I do it? Tried following below but its not working.
3) I have tried accessing the web interface through the server and I
cannot get this to work - any ideas?

Pretty new to this so please treat me as not knowing much...

Thanks

Lew

Mix by Album - Is like Mix by Song but uses the overall style of the
album to choose the next track.

The mixes will improve as the Trackstat dataset becomes larger
(playcount, recently played etc) It doesnt hurt to have it turned on.
Later versions of SugarCube have a pre-requirement to install TrackStat
as its fundamental to stop MusicIP looping and repeating the same tracks
over the course of a few days.

Err this is a slightly contentious point. Or has been frequently
asserted that digital plus appropriate distortion= analogue. Although
analogue fans dont think this is what they like,
it is ( the argument goes). Many ardent analogue fans including the
high priest Michael fremer admit that cdrs of vinyl capture most of the
vinyl magic. If you are interested I suggest having a look at
hydrogenaudio.
Anyway this was not intended to rehearse the arguments about that but
simply to say that I believe there would be some interest.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2011-05-23 Thread pippin

Well, it would be normal that when your Transporter loses the connection
that iPeng would switch to another player. This has nothing to do with
iPeng's communication.

It just means that the player is no longer present on the server (the
server doesn't report it anymore) so iPeng switches over to the next
one.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: ClassicFM Plugin

2011-05-23 Thread mrw

I recently created a plugin to play Classic FM's live and listen again
content, based on the Flash AAC streams published on Classic's UK Radio
Player console. The quality of the streams does not match the BBC AAC
streams, but they are quite listenable. The plugin also makes available
a number of other stations within Classic's parent group.

It has been successfully running on my Mac OSX system with attached
Squeezebox Classic and SqueezePlay, and I have no reason to suppose
that it won't work on any other system, too. But that has yet to be
tested. It uses the RTMP support provided by the BBC iPlayer plugin, so
it requires that plugin to be installed too.

I've set up a repository for anyone who may like to test it out. The
plugin can be installed using the server's Extension Downloader by
adding http://mrw-plugins.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/repo.xml to the list
of Additional Repositories in the Extension downloader. For a manual
download, visit the project home page:
http://code.google.com/p/mrw-plugins.

If you let me know of a problem, I shall try to fix it (a log would be
helpful).

One thing I plan attend to is the layout and content of the menus.
These mirror Classic's UK radio player console, and I find that the
titles are too long for comfortable navigation on the player. That
shouldn't be difficult to deal with.

No there was no problems when I was on SB server 7.5.2 on the same
server. I have noticed that when I have "stay connected" on and there
is a connection drop(the bug I mentioned)on my Transporter then iPeng
drops connection and then another player is selected.

Isn't the reason people are interested in vinyl that they think it
contains more audio information due to the analogue characteristics ?

Adding vinyl artifacts to a digital file would be the opposite to this,
it would remove audio information and make it sound worse than the
digital original.

Of course, I can't really classify myself as an audiophile so I might
be missing something obvious.

You mean it helps your players to stay connected? That's surprising for
me. Could it be that you are using more devices on your WiFi network
concurrently than your router can handle? Most WiFi routers only handle
8 or 16 devices.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Plugin Suggestion: Vinyl Emulator

2011-05-23 Thread adamdea

I understand that outside the Squeezebox environment it has been
demonstrated that by DSP a digital file can be made to sound like
vinyl. As I understand it this was done by .VST file which can't be
directly used by SBS.
Lots of people still like the sound of records more than cds or digital
files so I suspect it would be quite popular. From my lofty vantage
point of ignorance I would have thought it would be fairly easy to
implement for someone clever, and it may be that it's largely a matter
of transcoding something which has been done before.
This point has cropped up a number of times on the audiophile forum,
but I suspect it would be of much wider interest.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunes Update

2011-05-23 Thread Craig, James
I actually had a problem track myself at the weekend so maybe this might be
relevant;
I had a track with no album set in iTunes, but the mp3 itself contained ID3v1.1
tags which had an album name.
The album was then showing up in SlimServer and breaking the plugin's search of
iTunes.
To fix the problem I had to force iTunes to overwrite the v1.1 tags - changing
any other version had no effect!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPad UPnP/DLNA Digital Media Controller Apps

2011-05-23 Thread AndrewFG

Many thanks for your feedback.

it just passes on to PlugPlayer the url on the SqueezeCenter server
where the coverart can be found; and then PlugPlayer itself (should)
connect directly to SC and download the art. => So I wonder if perhaps
there is some kind of firewall problem that prevents PlugPlayer from
connecting to SC? (Just an idea...) Or maybe PlugPlayer has a
"settings" to allow/disallow downloading of coverart??

the player a list of all music formats that it can deliver; and then
the player/client chooses from the list whichever one it prefers.
Normally Whitebear offers PCM first in its list (because PCM is the
only "must offer" format) and so very often the player/client just
chooses the first offer. => If you want, you could try changing the
Whitebear Settings for the PlugPlayer client: try changing some of its
"Offer XX before YY" options...

logging options, you should check SSDP (both boxes) M-SEARCH and HTTP
Server checkboxes).

Try out Whitebear. The middleware that joins the two worlds of:
1. UPnP/DLNA media clients and media players, and,
2. Squeezebox Server and Squeeze Players
Download it for free here: http://www.whitebear.ch/mediaserver
