Thanks. It was only because I read that getting the server to transcode
to pcm instead of the player may improve sound quality that I came
across this anomaly. So what I gather is that ipeng is telling the
server not to convert but the server is for some reason is still
converting to 320.

Streaming flac fixes this so I may revert back.

Just one other question. Over cellular and streaming flac will it always
convert to MP3 even if bitrate limiting set to off?

All my flac files are 44.1 kHz. Not sure what it thinks - might have to
resign this to room 101.

What I think is happening is that if I get the server to transcode my
flac files to pcm then I'm limited to 320kbps over wifi for iPeng
playback even if bitrate limiting is set to off.

Disabling server transcode so flac is sent to the players then with
bitrate limiting disabled over wifi there is no MP3 conversion.

Is this an issue with server transcoding and bitrate limiting or have I
got a setting wrong on the server?

Sorry if this has already been covered.

Over wifi when bitrate limiting is set to off the server still
transcodes to 320kbps. Is this a new limitation? If I disable the lame
encoder on the server it'll playback at 1,411 pcm.

Really what I'd expect is that 1,411 pcm is sent when bitrate limiting
is set to off over wifi but have the option to set an MP3 bitrate as and
when.

Thanks

This inspiration came from the Android app Squeezer - there is a

This has stumped me. Set to off in bitrate limiting, on LMS in file
types under flac, mp3 has the lame decoder and PCM set to flac. But when
I stream to iPeng remote the song info says converted to 320mp3. Why?
All has been disabled apart from the decoder so I would expect
'converted to 1,411 PCM'

I want LMS to transcode to PCM for iPeng playback but I also need the
lame enabled.

I know we considered enforcing compression over 3G to counter some
complaints from users who did not have lame installed and saw their data
plans exhausting but I think we never actually implemented that with the
new playback (the old one had it).

Sorry I wasn't too clear. All my files are flac so in file types in
advanced on LMS under FLAC I have

AIFF = disabled
FLAC = disabled
MP3 = faad/lame
PCM = flac

Now on my SB Touch and Radio the file is transcoded to PCM but on iPeng
remote is converts to 320kbps mp3 even though bitrate limiting is turned
off for cellular and wifi (by the way I'm on local wifi)

If I disable the faad/lame encoder for mp3 iPeng receives a PCM stream
(which is what I want) but I need the mp3 encoder enabled.

I hope this is clearer.

 Depends on your router configuration.
What you need to do is to configure your router so that it will forward
the WOL packet to your local network (essentially re-broadcast it
there). Most routers have a special option for this for WOL.
The you have to set the port over which your router does this in iPeng's
server settings for your remotely configured server.

It then works like this: iPeng sends a WOL packet to your router on the
port you configure. Your router then takes that packet and re-broadcasts
it on your local network to wake up the server.

If you do the whole configuration remotely, you will also have to know
(and setup) the MAC of your server, if you do it while you are on your
own WiFi, chances are that iPeng can detect the MAC and will then store
it as soon as you enable WOL.

You can see this in the server settings.

Sorry but I'm new to this please can you explain simply. If on foreign
wifi do I need to configure the foreign router? What ports do I need to
configure/open? Thanks

 There are two possibilities:

 1. your router supports WOL, then it has a port that you send the packet
to (usually 9) and that's what you enter in iPeng.

 2. your router does NOT support WOL, then you might still be able to use
it. You'd have to open port 3483 also for UDP (not only for TCP as you
do for iPeng's playback; you probably did already do that if you want to
connect a Squeezebox remotely) and leave iPeng's default configuration
as it is. Then iPeng will use port 3483 for the WOL packet and your
router will send it to your server.
This, however, depends on whether your server/computer also can use
directly addressed WOL packets (usually they get broadcast, which is
what the router feature would do) and also your switches and your router
will have to remember the IP routes within your network. The problem is
that when your computer is off, it technically doesn't have an address
so the rest of your infrastructure has to remember how to send messages
 to it.
WOL packets are usually broadcast and send to every device on your
network and even in standby the network card will listen for the magic
WOL packets and wake up the computer.

I obviously can't tell you how your router's configuration works, I only
have my own router which does not support WOL.

Thank you. So as I understand it:

Stick 9 in the port on iPeng and try waking up server when I'm on
foreign wifi/3G.

Failing that try option 2 as I already have these ports open.

Sorry to bring this up again (see #4666)

If there is no decoder selected on LMS (mine is showing as disabled and
I can't change that as it's faded) with bitrate limiting on you'll still
get the song streamed and played the other end but it'll not be
transcoded so it'll be the same outcome with bitrate limiting on and
off.

I've now concluded that I'm streaming remotely full flac as no encoder

upload bandwidth as that's around 1mbps max so does drop below that.

Hi. I have successfully configured my network in order for iPeng to see

indicate. However when playing any track it stutters consistently. The
files are flac. Before I investigate further would you say this issue is
because of my underpowered Netgear ReadyNAS Duo? Matt.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2012-08-29 Thread 05mattjax

Thanks. I would have thought bit rate limiting turned on would be better
as in my head that's compressing the file to transfer over the Internet.
So with it turned off what bit rate is being transferred? Or with
limiting enabled is the server not only converting to mp3 but also
converting to a smaller size so two jobs instead of one?

It seemed a little better with off and I'll try the shine encoder
tonight - is that a more efficient encoder?

Also would you say this problem will occur on a wifi network outside off
my server as well as cellular? IPeng playback works flawlessly at home
but I guess that's because the server is not transcoding the flac file,
correct?

Cheers.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2012-08-29 Thread 05mattjax

It's all clear to me now. I had in my head that the file has to always
be encoded to mp3 when using remote playback, so I was a little confused
with the bit rate limiting option.

Anyway with bit rate limiting turned off the files being streamed is
flac. This will help the server as no encoding but uses up a fair bit of
bandwidth as it's flac.

With bit rate limiting turned on the server has to work a little bit to
encode the file to mp3 (hence my stuttering experience) but less
bandwidth as it's a smaller file.

There's always a compromise hey.

I am going to experiment with VPN tonight instead of port forwarding as
you say it's safer. Any limitations here please? My router is ok with
VPN but not sure if my NAS is.

Garym - presumably with bit rate limiting on and the song playing but
stuttering means some form of transcoding is occurring on the NAS. I'll
have to check the settings on the server to see what decoder is being
used.

I've installed the beta version and after a little tweaking I seem to be
able to switch players over to mysqueezebox.com, turn SBS off, turn the

Just one thing of note. I appear to not be able to acces the 'extras'

shows the + sign but not the name 'extras' next to it and nothing
happens when I press it. To resolve this I have to do a hard reset on

Thanks for this information. Having enabled SrvrPowerCtrl on the
LMServer I can successfully shutdown/restart the nas remotely via iPeng
without changing any settings. What I can't do is once shutting down the
players (Touch and Radio) will not switch to Squeezenetwork. Would you
say the shutdown command needs amending?

I have enabled ssh and can access via PuTTy. I can run the 'ps aux |
grep 'squeeze' and it chucks out some information but I'm a bit stuck
from here. Could you explain what I need to do from here. I would like
the use the 'switch to Squeezenetwork' function when shutting down. Does
iPeng switch too as I couldn't get this to work either.

Finally I guess as my Nas does not have WOL I can't start up the server
remotely via SrvrPowerCtrl - is this right? Thanks.

Is there anything I can do/test to get this working again as it's a

I understand that iPeng supports mysqueezebox.com and will move players
of your choice from your current server i.e NAS to the online server
i.e mysqueezebox.com. I have tried this on iPeng, selected my player
to move accross and although iPeng changes the server I need to
physically uplug my SBR from the mains to run its network connection
routine (go through the lights) so it connects to the new server.
Surely this is wrong as iPeng would not promote 'changing servers' if
you had to do this??? I use an SBR with iPeng on iPod Touch and NAS
running squeezebox server.
