Or make a temp folder somewhere piont LMS to it and rescan .

  Thanks, finally did this.

The flac file plays fine using LMS and squeezelite.

So the problem just seems to be the live streams via
  LMS/ffmpeg/squeezelite

So the audio from the file plays without distortion through the
squeezelite but when the same URL is played through LMS (e.g. using
Favorite or Tune0in URL) over same squeezelite there is distortion ?

No, the flc file plays properly when I play it using audacity - no
  LMS/squeezelite involved.

If I use LMS/BBCIplayer/squeezelite or LMS/tune in the
  url/squeezelite I get the distortion.

I don't know a way to play the file using LMS, I can't see a way to
  browse for a file.

Thanks. I have created a flc file but I don't know how to play it.

It is a Flac audio file - most media players (except Apple original) can
play it. Do you have LMS - if so then play it through your SB player.

   I was using
   http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/hls/uk/sbr_high/ak/bbc_radio_fourfm.m3u8

This means you are different from krell and so there could be either two
different problems or one problem caused by OSX.

What is your system setup when playing BBC live stream in the two
different ways. Full details system, OS LMS version, player type .

Thank you very much for your help, it is much appreciated. I was
trying to play it using LMS and couldn't figure out how to play it.
I am using iTunes integration and can't find a way to select a
  file.

I loaded it into Audacity and it sounds fine.

  I am using LMS 7.9.0 - 1424440547 on a 2014 mac mini using Yosemite
  10.10.2

My player is squeezelite and then via USB to a Devialet 200

  squeezelite is v1.6.4, Copyright 2012-2014

  ffmpeg was downloaded from ffmpeg.org

ffmpeg version 2.5.3 Copyright (c) 2000-2015 the FFmpeg developers

The following command start playing a 6Music and save the output into
the file BBC6music.flc. You can then play the flac file to check the
 quality.

Code:

   ffmpeg -i
http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/hls/nonuk/sbr_low/ak/bbc_6music.m3u8
 -f flac BBC6music.flc

 Non UK m3u8 stream are eirther 96kbps (sbr_low) or 48kbps (sbr_vlow).

Whereas the 6Music MP3 streams seem to be playing 128kbps (from BBC
 Radio App)
 http://open.live.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/5/select/mediaset/http-icy-mp3-a/format/pls/vpid/bbc_6music.pls

 So I expect a 128kbps MP3 stream will be better than a 48kbps AAC
 stream.

 edit:

I just retested to get bit rate of m3u8 - sbr_low is 96kbps and
sbr_vlow is 48kpbs. So the quality of stream will depend on the URls
you used - can you give a link to the exact opml file you used.

Thanks. I have created a flc file but I don't know how to play it.

I was using
http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/hls/uk/sbr_high/ak/bbc_radio_fourfm.m3u8

I got the opal file from somewhere in one of these enormous threads. I
am in the UK.

I am getting this as well, totally unlistenable. Listen again is fine

What gain setting are you talking about ?

I'm guessing he just means it is distorted. That is what I am getting. I
get distortion on all the live channels, listen again is ok. I don't
believe this is anything to do with a gain setting and I don't think he
means it is anything to do with a gain setting.
