There are obviously different philosophies here. Personally I think the
Muso approach is the right one. No-one has their files tagged perfectly,
and certainly most cannot be bothered.

I have stayed out of this discussion, as I long ago recognised that no
program will suit everyone when it comes to tagging and tag
interpretation -- developers simply have to make a decision. That's
because, despite the ID3 standard and the like, no standard has ever
been universally adopted by all programs and devices.

Personally, I prefer programs that make no guesses about my files -- if
tags are blank, they're blank. Foobar2000 is one that works this way.

The main reason I prefer this is that, although I take great care over
my tags, I have developed a non-standard method of tagging over the
years. Not because I wanted my own system, but because so many programs
and (particularly) playback devices implemented a non-standard feature
set.

For example, although it's considered bad practice, I have always
duplicated the Composer tag in the Artist tag (for classical music) --
because many portable playback devices default to showing the artist and
refuse to show the composer.

Another example: I recently tried out Musicbee
(http://getmusicbee.com/), a PC music manager which seems to be highly
regarded by many people. The result was confusion (for me).

I have always left my Album Artist tags blank, because over the years
many programs and devices have used the tag in unpredictable ways.
Because my Album Artist tags were blank, MusicBee copied my Performer
tags to the Album Artist tags in its library, and also duplicated those
tags as Artist in its music browser. I had to create virtual tags to
make sense of my music collection.

So I quickly stopped using Musicbee, but the program obviously suits a
lot of people who are happy for the program to guess at the tags.

I do hope that Muso continues to make as few assumptions about tags as
possible. But I understand jezbo's dilemma.

For what it's worth, over Christmas I tried using Muso on a 10 inch
tablet using remote desktop software. It was quickly obvious that even a
10 inch screen is far too small to use Muso in this fashion -- there was
a lot of zooming in and out. But I don't think it would be too difficult
to re-design Muso for the tablet screen and still retain everything that
makes Muso unique.

EDIT: I can't repeat this though - how do you invoke the database view
then go back to browing albums ? If you click on Browse Albums link
this is a shortcut to the standard Gallery View rather than
hierarchical so that may be why you are losing the levels. Standard way
to close the db view is via the Apply or Cancel Changes links at the
bottom. I will remove the Browse Albums link I think, and make it just
a label - I retained it for the time being since historically this was
the way to display the standard gallery view.

Yes, you're right -- it's because I click on Browse Albums, which I
suppose I expected would send me back to the last-used album view. If I
just click Cancel Changes in the DB view, I return to the previously
selected hierarchy. I'd suggest none of that is particularly intuitive
though, so getting rid of the Browse Albums link would be a good
idea.

Also, at the moment, if you choose to use the Gallery or Cloud album
view, and then return to Hierarchy, your previous hierarchy has
disappeared and you have to start again. I can see why it works this
way, as it is consistent with the Gallery and Cloud views -- you have to
choose each time.

The problem with that is that if you generally use, say, a four-deep
hierarchy view, you have to re-select it each time you return to the
Hierarchy from a different view. Maybe this issue will vanish if you
choose to go with a Pane view, but if not, would it be possible to have
a way of returning quickly to the last-used hierarchy view? Either in
the hierarchy menu, or maybe as an option in the Preferences.

I hope I'm not overloading you with suggestions. Have a good holiday.

Your worries about real estate are understandable. Space will always be
at a premium in an information-rich environment like Muso. If you can't
see a way to run panes in the main panel, maybe you could consider
running them vertically, where the hierarchy currently runs?

Anyway, I've been playing with the beta a bit more, and I've had my
first glitch. I asked Muso to import a custom tag, and the tag duly
appeared in the hierarchy right-click menu. I immediaitely tried to
build a new hierarchy using the custom tag. As I finished the hierarchy
and went to browse it, Muso crashed with an Unhandled exception (I've
appended the full error message below).

I think this was a non-trivial crash, because Muso refused to launch
again. No amount of killing processes or doing full reboots would bring
Muso back. I uninstalled the beta, and went back to 1.4. Muso worked
again. I installed the beta again, and it crashed during launch...so
I've gone back to 1.4 for now. It looks like I need guidance in deleting
some library/config files that are killing the beta before it launches.

One other thing to mention. Each time the beta crashed, odd things
happened on my internet connection: my music download manager (Adobe Air
based) said there was no internet connection, my email client and RSS
reader both refused to download images (but downloaded text), my email
checker said there was no internet connection. But my browser worked
just fine...I can't imagine this was Muso's fault. On the other hand, it
happened both times Muso crashed (when I uninstalled the beta,
reinstalled 1.4, and re-booted, all programs worked normally). Again, I
can't see how there can be a link, but I mention it for the record.

I set up a hierarchy. I then browse the database. I then go back to
browsing the albums -- but the hierarchy has disappeared, and I have to
set it up again. This is repeatable. Presumably the hierarchy should be
persistent in this scenario, as it's generally persistent between

That was quick. Bravo. And fundamentally, it functions as I had hoped.
I'll play with it for a couple of days, and give more feedback if I come

Initial thoughts: choosing hierarchy levels by repeated right-clicking
is fine for geeks playing with betas, but I think you'd need a more
user-friendly way of choosing levels once it's out of beta. I know too
many people who have never used a right-click button...

And if I'm being hyper-fussy, then I'd say that I don't find this
hierarchy system as elegant as the 'panes' view available in some media
players/browsers (first popularised by iTunes, I believe, and much
copied). In case it's not clear what I mean, I've attached a screengrab

jezbo -- Thank you for considering this. From my point of view, the
custom tags are actually optional. As I explained above, because many
programs don't read custom tags, I have had to duplicate any important
information in standard tags (e.g., my vital SUBGENRE tag is duplicated
in my COMMENT tag). Anyone using custom tags can easily do the same
thing.

So if browsing in Muso by random custom tags makes life too complicated,
then I wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage. I'd be perfectly
happy if I could browse more flexibly using just standard tags, as
listed at http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SlimServerSupportedTags.
And as I said before, I'd be equally happy if I could browse by system
folders if that's easier.

to allow drill-down by any attribute, but this would be a useful
starting point. Then we can consider how best to drill-down on the
information you require - do you normally target a composer first or
want to browse by sub-genre then composer?

If you play with the pivot viewer feature, which is only experimental
admittedly, you can drill down by various attributes (not sure if the
one you use for sub-genre is one of them) in any order - I could apply
the same mechanism to the main browser area of muso. Or I could try to
design a brand new drill down mechanism where you pick what you want to
summarise first (eg. list of composers), then having picked one or more
of those choose the attribute you'd like to drill into next (eg.
sub-genre), all the time showing the albums which match the selection so
far - this is basically what the pivotviewer does but I could design the
UI to work in a different way.

Picking up custom tags from all files may be tricky, since you'd have to
configure what to look for in muso, and new columns in the muso database
to put them in (a finite number or any would be more ideal). Are you
using LMS? Can this handle custom tags via a plugin?

Thank you for your reply and your interest. I'll try to answer as
comprehensively as I can.

A couple of things to bear in mind. As you have a large classical
collection yourself, you're probably aware of this, but anyway: the
concept of the 'album' (that is, the original CD) is fairly meaningless
when ripping classical music CDs. What I mean by this is: if you rip the
album 19 by Adele, then that's exactly what ends up in your digital
collection -- a single album by Adele.

But take the average classical CD, containing, say, Beethoven's 1st and
4th symphonies. There is no reason to keep these together, so most
people rip each work separately, creating a separate 'album' for each
work.

This is one reason why digital classical collections become difficult to
manage -- a collection of 1000 CDs can turn into several thousand
separate works, so detailed tagging is essential if you're to retain
control.

Secondly, experience has shown that trying to avoid using the Artist tag
for composers is futile. Too many devices or programs have limited
capability for customisation, so I long ago accepted that I would have
to use Artist=Composer for classical music. This also introduces
problems, solved for most devices by having an additional custom tag
called PopArtist for when I only want to show pop artists (and the
composer tag for when I only want to show classical 'artists'.

I only use the genre tag to separate music into 'pop' and 'classical'. I
use other tags for more detailed classification. The classical sub-genre
(instrumental/chamber/orchestral/vocal/etc) would be contained in both
the COMMENT and SUBGENRE tags (I started out just using the custom
SUBGENRE tag, but of course many programs don't see custom tags, so I
copied the data to the COMMENT tag, which is a standard tag).

So for a typical classical 'track' (here, the first movement of
Beethoven's 1st symphony) my tags would look like this:

*ALBUM:*Symphony No. 1 - Haitink
*ARTIST:* Beethoven
*BAND:* LSO, Haitink
*CATALOG#:* LSO0598
*COMMENT:* Orchestral
*COMPOSER:* Beethoven
*CONDUCTOR:* Bernard Haitink
*GENRE:* Classical
*LABEL:* LSO Live
*ORCHESTRA:* LSO
*PERFORMER:* LSO, Haitink
*PERIOD:* Romantic
*SUBGENRE:* Orchestral
*TITLE:* Adagio molto - Allegro con brio
*TRACK:* 1
*UPC:* 822231109020
*YEAR:* 2006

Points to note:
(1) The ALBUM is an individual work, not the whole CD.
(2) Some tags double up, something I had to introduce for the sake of
flexibility. So SUBGENRE (a custom tag) = COMMENT (a standard tag
available to most programs), BAND = PERFORMER, etc.
(3) The YEAR is, if possible, the year the recording was made. Useful
for me to know, but not at all helpful when Muso defaults to sorting by
year (as it does when you browse an artist)...
(4) It might also be worth mentioning that my digital classical
collection is mostly FLAC and OGG files, very rarely MP3s.

So my wish in Muso would be to be able to sort classical works as
follows:

COMPOSER (or Artist) - SUBGENRE (or COMMENT) - ALBUM

I do use LMS. I use the custom tags to create custom menus in LMS (using
the Custom Browse plugin). I have tried Muso's pivot viewer, but if I'm
being honest it doesn't really solve the problems I've outlined, not in
its current form anyway.

If Muso could pick up most or all standard tags, and could have a system
to allow sorting by more levels than it currently does, it would be well
on the way to delivering a first-rate classical browser (I believe
COMMENT, BAND and CONDUCTOR are standard tags in FLAC/OGG/MP3, and are
certainly supported in LMS:

jdk - unlike you I do place emphasis on the album (the CD) as the
primary browsing entity rather than the work, simply because I come to
associate the cover with its contents, that comes naturally to me. But I
appreciate that others may like to come at it from a different angle. If
you rip a CD with two works you'd want to see two pseudo-album entities
while browsing, correct? Would they both have the same cover? What if
you have a multi-disk album with many works like The Essential
 Sibelius?
I have this as a single album entity but when I view the album page I
see all the works sub-divided by disk number and works within disks.

Yes, If I rip a CD with two works I'd want to see two pseudo-album
entities while browsing and they both have the same cover.

Re The Essential Sibelius: I have the same set -- in fact as you may
remember it's the example I used in an earlier post to illustrate how
browsing by Year as the default does not work well
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?91575-MUSO-Support-Threadp=722072viewfull=1#post722072).

Yes, I still apply the same approach to ripping -- I have divided the
set into dozens of separate works and each uses the same album cover.
This system works well for me. It means that when I want to play, for
example, Sibelius' Symphony No.4, I go to CLASSICAL - SIBELIUS -
ORCHESTRAL and run down the alphabetical list and find all my recordings
of the symphonies grouped together.

Re importing track data: how would I know if Muso is importing LMS
custom tags successfully? I can't find any obvious reference...

While I cannot find a serious flaw in Muso when browsing pop music, it's
not very useful when browsing large classical collections.

For example: I have well over 100 albums of music by JS Bach. As I
browse through them in Muso, I can't work out a useful way to order them
so that I can find things quickly. There isn't any way to break the
albums down into further sub-sections by using tags.

When you have a large classical collection of CDs, you would sub-divide
popular composers into sections
(instrumental/chamber/orchestral/vocal/etc) -- at least that's what I
do. Only then do I sort alphabetically. I think many people with large
classical collections would take the same approach. And I have done the
same with my digital files -- I use tags to create the sections, and I
mirror that by having a similar structure for system folders. If I need
to find music quickly on my Squeezebox or MP3 player, I browse by music
folder.

That's why I did suggest in a previous post two ways you could address
this issue (either allowing the user to browse by system folders, or
using multiple tags, including user-created (custom) tags.

I realise that neither is a trivial request, but I sincerely hope you
consider one of these options, because at the moment you have the
perfect browser for pop music, but in my opinion it's still not usable
for large classical collections.

Keep up the good work.

I just use the custom tags to create custom menus in LMS (using Custom
Browse).

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2012-10-24 Thread jdk

So I've been playing with Muso today and I'm impressed. Generally I like
the style of presentation, and it makes browsing my collection more
interesting. However there are two factors that, for me, make it
difficult to use. So this post is basically a feature request.

Firstly, would it be possible to add the option to browse albums by
Music Folder (one of the options offered in most LMS browsers, including
Logitech's own software)?

The reason for this is that I have a large collection of classical
music, and browsing all albums at once is not very practical. Even
though I'm careful to tag my files properly, I've always used the Music
Folder option to access music because I find it's quickest. My classical
music is organised as follows:

Composer - Section (Orchestral/Chamber/Instrumental/Vocal) -
Work-Performer

Rather than browse by music folder, an alternative would be to allow
sorting by multiple tags, including custom tags created by the user (not
Muso tags, just standard FLAC/MP3 tags).

My second request is for an option to switch the cloud map feature off
and just present normal lists of artists when browsing. I just find the
cloud map more difficult to scan than a standard list.

And a final query: at the moment when I choose Albums Sorted by
Artist, the albums don't seem always to appear in alphabetical order
(see screengrab). I can't see a problem with my tags. How does Muso sort
albums by Artist?

Where do you store your Section information by the way - does this
come across to muso via a tag?

Yes, I have a custom tag (which I call sub-genre) which contains the
section information.

So this isn't pulled into muso currently I'm assuming. How does LMS get
 it? Via some plugin?

Yes, the Custom Scan and Custom Browse plugins allow you to scan and
browse custom tags in LMS.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

I just installed Muso today and I am trying to to sync with LMS (which
is on a different machine).

I'm getting the following error message: Connection Failed: A
connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly
respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because
connected host has failed to respond. The CLI connection is okay.

Muso is on a Windows 7 x64 machine. LMS is on a Windows Home Server
machine (very similar to Windows Server 2008 R2). The music folder on
the server is shared, and I temporarily disabled all firewalls in case
that was the problem, but it didn't help.

One thing I was wondering is if Muso insists on a recent version of LMS?
I am using v7.5.2 (with MySQL version 5.0.22).

Answering my own question here, but it might help others, as the
solution is fairly obscure. I found the solution in this thread:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?0-Connecting-to-the-MySQL-database

In short, comment out the bind-address line in
Squeezebox\server\MySQL\my.tt
