Packet aggregation could produce your symptoms if the ISP timer was too
long and ISP equipment was waiting to maximise packet payloads.

This could be aggrevated if you have security s/w in your PC which is
also examining packets in detail which results in an v. bursty feed to
SBS.

Radio 2 just rebuffered at 5%. Expecting the worst, I was delighted to

It's early days, but whatever change A&A made might just have done the

Would be nice to have no rebuffering at all, of course...

He might have been talking about the bandwidth limiting connected with

cope with.

2009-10-07 Thread Peter314

Ok, I listened patiently to Radio 4 until the problem recurred, then
called A&A tech support. After establishing that we were talking about a
problem with streaming radio, not video, the guy put me on hold for a
while to look at what was going on.

He went on to say that he has made a change so that there is now no
traffic shaping going on (and implying - but not explicitly stating -
that there had been traffic shaping). I was told that some value (didn't
catch which one, I'm afraid) had now been turned up 'to 110%'.

So, we'll see. Radio 2 has been streaming fine for the last 20 mins...

I can go 1% better and say that I'm occasionally experiencing the 6% of

As noted above, local flac files play fine. The system is rock solid
apart from the occasional streaming radio problems.

Is there any quantitative test I should be running in addition to these
observations?

No, both SBs are wired (one via Homeplugs). They play all local flac
files flawlessly, including 24/48. The problem is definitely limited to
streaming radio.

I haven't, although the process I follow (into and out of standby, then
navigate back to the radio station) probably takes no longer than 10
secs or so.

Thanks Andy, that's useful to know. I don't know whether iPlayer has
the same behaviour from the iPlayer website because all my home
listening is via SB Classic. It's not a major problem - streams will
often play for hours without a hitch - but it is annoying when it
happens because it is not self-correcting.

Although I don't listen to the radio via the iPlayer website, I have
watched BBC TV programmes this way without any problem.

It's not to do with bandwidth - more to do with how packets are
delivered.

Sometimes these shapers don't recognise SBS as an app that needs good
packet delivery and they try to aggregate packets which means packets
aren't delivered in an even flow.

You should talk to their tech support about their traffic shaping (
http://www.aaisp.net.uk/kb-broadband-shaping.html ) and see if they can
do some testing with your setup to see if traffic shaping is causing
your problems. The usual response from ISPs is that traffic shaping
could not cause a buffering problem so you may need to persist.

However, on other occasions it hangs at 5% rebuffering and needs

This happens on each of two wired SB Classics and is known in our house
