[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Performance issues with iTunesupdate & Mac OS X

2006-03-12 Thread James

Have you changed the iTunes Library rescan interval?
If not, each time iTunes Update makes a change in iTunes this will
trigger SlimServer to rescan the library, which uses a lot of CPU
time.
Most people disable the automatic rescan (set interval to 0) and use
the scheduled rescan plugin to set a daily rescan when SlimServer will
not be in use.

2006-03-13 Thread govardha

James,

Thanks for your feedback. I think your comments make sense and I will
give it a whirl(as will my brother who also purchased a system) some
time soon.

I saw one of your previous posts which gave details of this particular
bug. The details of this bug just says Mac OS X 10.3, can you modify
it so that it also says 10.4 or does it not make a difference?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Performance issues with iTunesupdate & Mac OS X

2006-03-13 Thread govardha

I just wanted to post an update for other people searching on this
particular problem or something similar.

I followed James's instructions and did the following
- Disabled automatic scanning through the Server Settings options by
changing the time counter to 0.
- Using the "Rescan Music Library" option I have enabled it so that it
runs that at 10 AM.

Things seem to be working ok. Perl is not hammering my system and I
have played a few tracks. More udpates to follow.

James :

- I am not sure about one of the choices in James's "iTunesupdate
plugin". It says, I can do a Direct Update, I have set up my SServer
to come up automatically on a reboot, do I have to enable this or not?

Thanks,
Gov

RE: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Performance issues with iTunesupdate &Mac OS X

2006-03-13 Thread Craig, James (IT)
It's not my bug so I don't think I can change it.
But any fix will apply equally for all OS X versions I'd assume.

I don't think this is really an OS X problem anyway, the iTunes scan is
just as bad on Windows.

RE: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Performance issues with iTunesupdate &Mac OS X

2006-03-14 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Direct Update is the only option that works on OSX at the moment.

It refers to whether iTunes Update will perform updates in iTunes in
real-time or save them to a log file to be applied later.
This is useful if either
A) your iTunes doesn't run on the same box as SlimServer
B) you want automatic updates from iTunes but not the performance hit
from rescanning after every song (unlikely)
The script that does the updates only works on Windows at the moment.
I posted a test version for OS X a while back but need some testing from
Mac users to get it working.
