just thought I'd dig this thread up again, as I've been trying to get
the flash aac / flash mp3 to work so I can listen again to some of the
proms in higher quality than currently.
Basically I get playback okay with prefer wma streams checked, but I
get no playback without this checked.

I am running no modifications or anything, I've installed everything
from scratch, the only thing I copied over from the previous install
was prefs/server.prefs
Any thoughts on how I can further this?

Thats suggesting it is not connecting direct to an rtmp server. Do you have some forms of proxy or something else in the way? Hi Triode, I have a direct ADSL connection to the internet. There is a (squid) proxy running on the same server as squeezecenter and squeezecenter is configured to use that proxy in the place where you specify a proxy, but my outbound internet access is not filtered in any way, and the proxy is not running in transparent mode or anything like that. Hi Triode, just removed the proxy setting, and can confirm that I'm now listening to one of today's earlier proms in AAC and it's sounding great! Hi Triode bpa, Have you tried setting the prefer wma option in the settings web page for the plugin? okay, with that option enabled I can listen again... but it'd be nice to have the higher quality if possible - I am UK based, with a UK ISP The error says the response received from the server was not what was expected. can I type in an RTMP command after a telnet, in the same way as I can do a GET / HTTP/1.0 type command after telnet-ing to a web server? I've tried something like DESCRIBE rtmp://streamurl RTMP/1.0 and I get nothing back. I seem to get nothing back at all, the server just appears to close the connection after I enter any command, with no error reported. What is the host OS ? debian linux. no iptables rules. there's a squid proxy running on there for http, but I can't see that should [a|e]ffect this? RTMP is not RTSP - DESCRIBE is part of RTSP which was part of the protocol used with RealAudio. Triode knows the RTMP protocol as he implemented it. There are small differences in stream settings (e.g. speed) between a user inside the UK and outside the UK but BBCiPlayer has been tested in both regions (Triode in the UK, bpa outside the UK) so geo-ip stuff shouldn't matter. RTMP opens other ports to start a stream - have you tested with squid turned off ? Have you tried setting the prefer wma option in the settings web page for the plugin? This will stop it using the rtmp streams. I don't understand the debug it suggests the server you are connecting to is not an rtmp server or it implements the protocol differently from me! Assuming the RTMP protocol is the same, the only explanation I can think if is something is interfering with the protocol stream such as security s/w or possibly some form of proxy. What is the host OS ? Is this a new install or an install that was working and has now stopped ?# If it was working and has now stopped. It is possible this is a BBC problem as they are having various issues. Recently the BBC have had problems on their internet feeds (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbiplayer/F13735684 ) . Since your install was working and then suddenly stopped - I would tend to believe the problem is at BBC end.
