Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Music IP becomes Amplified Music Service

2010-10-06 Thread tschan

Are there any plans to integrate something similar to MusicIP into the
server or to license the technology? I ask because I really like the
functionality but the MusicIP software has some problems that are
rather hard to avoid (mainly it seems to ignore files whose names
contain special characters).

I agree. I'll go further and say that I think people are beginning to
expect this type of functionality. Hence, the numerous copycats.

I disagree. People love Pandora / LastFM / Slacker / Apple Genius. If
they can make it an easy to operate, integrated feature of SBS I think
it would be a hit. Especially if they made it an 'App' named 'Genius'
;o) But I also suspect it's way down on the priority list.

Maybe not even back burner, but perhaps cold storage.

Unless the company decides that doing this would be a feature with
broad appeal (which I personally doubt), I can't see this ever
happening.

I think it has to be #1, since AMS owns the rights to MusicIP. Also, it
would (should) make it less quirky than having it as a separate program
(I still have issues maintaining linkage).

Number 1, because in that case also people running SBS on a non i386
processor server (basically all NAS devices) can profit from it.

Basically what you want to ask for is MyDJ integration into SBS.

Okay,

agree that this wouldbe backburner after SBT.

I'll try and draft an enhancemenmt request next week. I just submitted
my first one today, so I'll wait for some feedback on that before I do a
second.

Any ideas on approach, i.e. what are we asking for?
1) MusicIP to be licensed from AMS and fully integrated into SBS (full
version)
2) MusicIP server to be supported by Logitech and maintained in line
with SBS and OS changes
3) All future SBS builds to support old versions of Windows so MusicIp
still works.

The best way would be to submit an enahcement in the bug tracking
system and put it up for a vote. I'm sure anybody using MiP would vote
for it.

Right now, I'm sure the SB team a Logitech is primarily focused on
getting the SBT out the door, so I'm sure this would be a back-burner
effort.

I think if MiP was integrated, a lot more people would use it too!
It's amazing that despite the hurdles you have to overcome to get it
working don't prevent a lot of people from using it.

I don't use it a lot, but it's brilliant when I do get around to using
it.

I think that the inevitable breaking of MusicIP will cause a lot of
upset on the forums (far more that my OP is likely to generate).

I am not sure whether this is a pure licensing issue or maintenance of
the MusicMagic Server software. Either way, I'd encouage Logitech to
think through the issue and solutions/alternatives before it happens.

How do we best lobby for that?

I support this suggestion whole-heartedly. I was dismayed to learn
that MusicIP is no longer being maintained. I've been running MIP
headless with Squeezecenter for ages, and it is certainly my preferred
method for listening to my 12,000+ music collection. Licensed
integration by Logitech would be just brilliant.

That's a real shame - losing MIP functionality (which I agree seems
inevitable in the long term if it's not being actively supported by the
developers and/or available to new customers) is one of the few things
that would make me seriously consider sticking with a particular
software release and not upgrading beyond that.

The good thing is, that there is also a linux version and the
functionality of the SugarCube Plugin.

I also use only the MIP integration with Sugarcube to hear music.

Nevertheless, i also guess that somewhere in the furture there will be
a problem.

As long as Microsoft or Apple doesn't change something that breaks
MusicIP...

I'm guessing that it's just a matter of time until something breaks and
the MusicIP plugin is removed from Squeezebox Server.

There's no reason at all MiP will stop working with SBS unless something
gets broken accidentally or otherwise on the Logitech side. You're
still able to analyze new tracks, integration with Musicbrainz still
works etc, so the only thing we're effectively stuck with is the lack of

... well my suggestion to Logitech is to license the MusicIP technology
and incorporate it within Squeezebox Server.

I still use MusicIP all the time to generate playlists for playing on

hardly seamless and I know it is a matter of time before some other

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Music IP becomes Amplified Music Service

As I've understood all developers that knows the MusicIP source code has
left the company, so the development of MusicIP is halted and has been
so for a while.

The statement:
"Amplified currently has no plans to offer support for MusicIP Mixer."

which is shown on the download page also makes it pretty clear that
they have no plans to update the MusicIP code.

So unfortunately the future doesn't look very promising.
