Re: Texas Music Cafe Q?

1999-02-20 Thread Pflash40

hmmm...maybe i am the only person who has seen this program. i have only seen
it once on the PBS station in the dallas/ft. worth area but have meant to look
for it again. not sure when it is on but i was amazed that is was being done
out of waco, tx which is the home of Baylor University, the baptist school
that did not allow dancin on it's campus until just a few years ago. not that
that had anything to do with the Texas Music Cafe but i have never thought of
waco as a hotbed of music in Tx.

it has been a while ago that i saw this program but it caught my attention
because a dallas area swing band, cowboys and indians, was one of the artists
becoming spotlighted. i thought the show was a noble effort but the production
on some of it was lacking. seems some of it was shot in theater/studio and
that part looked fine but the cowboys and indians segment was shot at a club
and lacked good camera work. i seem to recall the show did interviews with the
artists and spent time showing setup for the shows in the theaters. i can't
recall the other artists except to say there was a blues band and a female
folksinger. i have meant to look for the show again and now that i have been
reminded of i will.

i did think it was a noble effort for the waco folks and considering i have
only seen one show, i can hardly say more. hope this helps.

Yes Reznor produced the sound track for Lost Highway, but if he likes country
it doesn't show up on it. Nost one Patsy Cline number is included but the
Smashing, Pumpkins, NIN, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Marilyn Manson, Trent solo do.
The least likely cut is on by Jobim. Oh well.

 Didn't...no. No, but didn't God I can't remember. Didn't Trent Reznor
do a production for a David Lynch film with all kinds of country stuff on
it. 'Lost Highway' That was the name of it! With like Patsy Clne on it.
Didn't Trent Reznor do that? Am I totally lost, but isn't Trent Reznor one

When is that, mid March? Oh yeah, we have a festival here in Dee-Troyt that
time as well called The Hamtramck Blowout, and it's pretty much the same
thing. Seventy of the Motor City's best ass-kissing bands playing a bunch of
local venues for FREE with the proceeds going to fund The Detroit Music

Steve Earle/Kelly Willis - Britain's Daily Telegraph

1999-02-20 Thread Louise Kyme

Here's a couple of reviews in today's Daily Telegraph. Don't think much
of the Kelly Willis one, although she had a picture with it.

--

Steve Earle and the Del McCoury Band
The Mountain (E2/Grapevine)

Few albums make such a good first impression as Steve Earle's new disc.
It's like an infectious rash you can't leave alone.

In contrast to the tracks on El Corazon - his maudlin, though terrific
previous album -The Mountain is a collection of catchy bluegrass songs
written by Earle in homage to master bluegrassman Bill Monroe. Each
tune, brilliantly performed by the Texan Del McCoury Band, is a gem,
combining the pacy, individual melodies of banjo, mandolin and fiddle.

This deceptively simple music is the sound of hillbillies at play, the
sound of pure, genuine country and, as such, finds little favour with
Nashville's rhinestones sophisticates. None of this will bother Earle,
who has spent a lifetime upsetting people.

Run-ins with authority - from his schoolboy days when he brandished a
sawn-off shotgun in class to the time he was jailed for assaulting a
policeman - have often been reflected in the angry, rock-tinged songs
about the plight of working men.

Behind all this is the pain of songwriting, which he has likened to
living with a wild animal: "It's that unexplainable force that causes
you to be depressed. As long as the Beast is there, I know I will always
write."

He's still writing, better than ever, and, in shifting from blue-collar
to bluegrass with these cheery, hand-clapping songs, it appears he's
tamed that Beast.

Kelly Willis
What I deserve (Rykodisc)

Kelly Willis's voice is described as "mellow" by her publicists, and it
is true that on the weaker tracks here she lives down to this
uninspiring tag. Her voice is soothing, but also bland and soporific on
the below-average love songs written by her husband, Bruce Robison.

Elsewhere, though, it is throaty, raw and full of character. On tracks
such as Take Me Down, about a lousy boyfriend, and Dan Penn's Real Deep
Feeling, the singing is strong enough to stand comparison with the
muscular performance of someone such as Wynonna.

In the five years since her previous full-length album, the Austin-based
singer writer and guitarist has changed styles. On this, her forth
record, she's ditched the honky tonk and the Texas rockabilly and blues
in favour of more mainstream material.

The best track is her own Talk Like That, a nostalgic look back at
family ties. It is a wistful reminder of what a good country song is
meant to be: a poignant story well told.

Kimmie Rhodes / Turntables

1999-02-20 Thread RMould5417

I really haven't worried about it much since my old turntable broke nine years
ago, just about the time I got my first disc player. Have hoarded and weaseled
literally thousands of cd's since then, but only recently began thinking about
some of my old vinyl, and wishing I could hear it again.
Actually, a year or so ago I started thinking I'd like to get another
turntable, but was gonna try to find one that played 78's. What few I have
noticed are all in some hideous console with a burned-out television.
Last weekend, I was at a garage sale, and noticed a Dual 1019 turntable,
(c. 1965-69) was absolutely pristine, and played not only 78, (with the same
needle, no less) but the near-useless 16 rpm. (two years ago I wouldn't have
even known what that was for - thanks everybody) Seems to be a lot of
reasonably priced 78's around, but didn't want to buy any until I'd nailed a
way to listen.
Thought this'n looked pretty cool, with the heavy walnut case, and thick teak
/ plexi lid. Seventy bucks.Y-Ha.

S. Finally got aroud to hooking it up, the first thing I grabbed was
Kimmie Rhodes - Man In The Moon (Heartland) album she'd given me back when I
first started the show in '90. Had only heard a couple of tracks when I've
taken it in to the station to use, and am just now enjoying it in full.
Starts with Jimmy Day steel break on the title track that kills.
Not sure how KR feels about this album - I'm sure she's advanced as a
songwriter, but there's some damn fine stuff on here. (6 originals, plus Helen
Phillips - Texas Blues; Jack Clement's - Just Someone I Used To Know; Bobby E.
Smith's - How Long; Ned Washington's - When I Wish Upon A Star, which sends
chills down my spine)
Like all her albums, she's surrouded herself with top-shelf musicians who
understand her music, and compliment her effort - Kimmie's a hell of a talent,
but I figure even a two-headed baboon would have to work at it, to screw up a
record that had Jimmy Day, Wes McGhee, (harmony vocals) David Zettner, Eric
Hokkanen, Marcia Ball, Spencer Starnes, John Reed, Joe Gracey, (production;
elec. guitar) Freddie Krc, Steve Meador, Bobby Arnold, and Bobby Earl Smith
helping out.

Damn, I'm enjoying this like when I was a kid and found a long-lost toy.

Next, I'm grabbin' that box of Bob Wills rekkids my old man left me.
