RE: Doo Rag

1999-04-21 Thread Michele Flannery

very lo-fi indie washboard drums indie rock/blues what have you, a la
Chickasaw Mud Puppies, but a little edgier un-trad sounding. "What We Do"
('96) has even rougher production, sounding like it was recorded to produce
a real tinny AM radio sound. Just like Real Audio!

Does anyone on the list know anything about about a cd called "Chuncked and
Muddled" by Doo Rag, on Bloat Records? The somewhat self-consciously retro
packaging has a 1994 copyright.
Someone I work with just handed it to me, and said "You're always listening
to that yee haw stuff, you might like this."
She was right. It sounds a little like Beck playing the blues. Very lo fi
production. It's curiously hypnotic. I can't stop listening to it.

Kill Rock Stars do accordions

1999-04-20 Thread Michele Flannery

Yep, (blush) I realized this after my fast and furious initial excitement of
an image of Kathleen Hanna toting around an accordion translating some old
steel guitar rag. DOH!

Oops. Great idea though, fodder of dreams!

 Tell me more!!

Are these performed by various Kill Rock Stars-like bands? Or is it
 just the
 title I find so appealing.

Speaking of LL Cool J accoustic hip hop songs, another good one:

Luka Bloom's version of "I Need Love"

Excerpts from internet.listserv.postcard2:

Dunno that the "if a song is a great song it should still work
on just a bare acoustic guitar" rule is a universal one, though I agree
with it much of the time. Aside from LL Cool J's amazing acoustic
rendition of "Mama Said Knock You Out", there aren't a whole lot of
hiphop songs that would sound good on acoustic guitar.

Hankdogs?

Listening to the Hankdogs CD " Bareback" ..very nice. Anyone know
more about this band?

RE: Hankdogs?

1999-02-11 Thread Michele Flannery

Yep, I was tricked by the name as well, plus one of the guys on the cover is
wearing a cowboy hat, really surprising me when I heard the first track.
Thought this CD was produced by Joe Boyd (sounds like it) but I think he
just signed them to Hannibal.

Despite the name, the Hank Dogs are not an alt-country band. They're a
British trio whose dark folk music recalls melancholy Brits like June
Tabor and Nick Drake. Lovely stuff, with some rather unsettling lyrics.
I bet they've never heard of either the Hangdogs or the Honeydogs.--don

Lambchop/Calexico show in SF

1999-01-22 Thread Michele Flannery

It was a good night of music - it was fun to see Calexico do their spaghetti
western stuff accompanied by lots of hoots and hollers from the crowd.
Lambchop kept to their sad and sleepy mood, only did one of their new soul
numbers. The strange thing about the night was that the sold out crowd
seemed to be streaming out the doors once they realized that Lambchop was
going to continue on with the sleepy dreamlike mood of the evening...um, er,
even though that's what they sound like? I didn't quite understand. Encore
included an Elvis Costello cover(!)

heh heh, that thought crossed my mind as well.

They sure looked hip, but they weren't paying any attention to the music.

Well, the show got a big writeup in both weeklies. I would expect that a
lot of people left once they found out what Lambchop sounds like!
