I know I was going on the other day about how dated the Clash sound
nowadays, but jeez, they certainly didn't deserve this abominable
 "tribute" album.

this piece of crap was guaranteed the above by the getting the mostly the
lamest of bands to contribute. there are so many great rock'n'roll/punk bands
(backyard babies, streetwalkin' cheetahs, hellacopters, nomads, dimestore
halos, d generation, etc) that would have done so much of a better job, it's
pathetic that this is what they came up with. just more proof (as if anyone
needed it) that the major labels really have their heads up their collective
butts.

There is a difference between noise and music, right?

my fave stuff ol' don's is the legendary am sessions ep, which features some
the grittiest blues rock of the mid-60's, and the spotlight kid/clear spot
double cd, which features some of the most monstrous guitar work courtesy of
mr. zoot horn rollo(who's book on his beefheart years is one of the better
rock'n'roll reads).

I read somewhere (ICE, maybe) that this will be available exclusively
through Amazon.com for like two months before its general release.
Something about Amazon wanting to flex its muscles by getting an album
on the charts on the basis of only Amazon sales.

don't know about this, but there is a new "import" triple cd on the market
that has all three shows recorded in philly in october of last year of them
doing their first 3 albums. probably only for the hardcore fan, but for those
of us who couldn't make the shows, a nice piece nonetheless.

don't know if anyone has mentioned it but his new one, "im wise" on
hmg/hightone, contains some of the finest jerry lee pumping piano that you'll
ever hear. while he can play pretty much any style out of the pop songbook(as
witnessed by his fine stylings with big sandy) he seems to have somehow got
ahold of whatever the killer's been swiggin' all these years. not a bum song
in the bunch, i can't get the thing outta my player. to these ears, on the
finest albums of the year.

If a record label released material without the consent of the artist,
wouldn't it be obvious that something rotten was going on? If so, what's
 the difference here?

the difference is that there's a contractual, legal relationship between
artist and company that either disallows, or allows, the company to release
with or without consent of the artist. there is no such agreement between the
public and the artist.

ive yet to meet any fans who trade or purchase live stuff that hasn't
purchased much, if not all, of the artist's catalog. many artists encourage
such activity. ive been to several todd shows, and he has been pretty clear
that he doesn't have a problem with taping and trading. hell, bet he's even
got a few items in his collection.

how about i just continue to show up at your shows, drink booze from the

helping pay the bills, wouldn't you?

ok, but the real question is: did you ever see the greatest rock'n'roll band
ever to come screaming outta the motor city? i'm speaking of sonic's
rendezvous band. i saw a couple of shows they did, including opening up for
the ramones in 77, at the legendary second chance in ann arbor. maybe the best

for those interested in hearing actual country music -- as opposed to
roots-rock, f*lk, etc. -- you're still quite likely to run into it on
mainstream country radio. And you're certainly gonna hear a lot more of

as long as you don't mind listening to the all the dreck in between. but i
guess that's par for the course with pretty much all commercial radio (the
exception being kpig in northern cal).

1999-02-25 Thread Svb442

don't know if anyone has talked about this new album, entitled "the hot
guitars of biller and wakefield" but it's a gas. dave biller plays guitar and
jeremy wakefield plays steel, and the whole thing is jazzed up hillbilly
boogie directly descended from the classic sounds of speedy west and jimmy
bryant. it escapes me now, but i know these guys have both paid their dues in
various west coast outfits, and they got a couple of flyrite boys, as well as
dave stucky and deke dickerson (who co-produced) adding their talents. its on
hightone offshoot hmg, and it's really great great stuff.

he hasn't been convicted. yet. he has been indicted, and was supposed to show
up for a court hearing yesterday. he's presently out on a $50,000 bond.
