Re: Oscar Nomination/Allison Moorer
Re: the Allison Moorer Oscar nomination, B. Silvers asks: and the record didn't do all that well in the P2 best of '98 poll, did it? Alabama Song came in a very respectable(?) 36th, with, if I read this right, a total of 11 votes. At least one voter, as I recall, tagged Soft Place To Fall as song of the year. And it still tears me, er, him, up every time. And says: Not that that's justification... Well, no . . . especially as all 11 who voted for it are persons of impeccable taste g.
Gwil Owen (Re: Oscar Nomination)
Gwil and his band, with Bill Dwyer on guitar, sure put on a smokin' set last night at the Billy Block Roots Revival at the Exit-In in Nashvilleplayed a couple of hard-edged new ones. Good show, but the highlight had to be Linda Gail Lewis' earlier set.Alison Moorer was also in the crowd, but didn't get up to sing BH

He's got a track each on Rig Rock Truckstop, Rig Rock Jukebox and one on the Uprooted compliation that came out last year. He's written a great many of the songs that Toni Price has recorded, as well. He also had a cool twang-rock tune on Bloodshot's underground Nashville compilation.--don

Which reminds me of a question I'd been meaning to ask here for awhile. From the limited exposure I've had to Gwil Owen's songs, (on a Bloodshot comp and Toni Price's last record) I've been awfully impressed. Does he have any releases available of his own music and should I be seking them out? Hey, that's great news. God knows she deserves it. May this jump start her own career. As far as I'm concerned, she should be the new queen of Nashville (and all *good* that being associated with that town once implied), and not just because she's a pretty redhead. Neal Weiss
