About the only thing you can try is to deep dischargethem. Do this
by connecting a load to the battery terminals. The load should be 10
ohms or more. Leave it with the load connected overnight and then
recharge it. If it still doesn't hold a charge it's pretty much
dead. At this point the only thing you can do is to open the
battery up, remove the dead cells and swap in good cells from other
batteries.

Any hope for PB 1xx batteries?

2001-07-12 Thread Flint Million (PB List)

I have a stack of dead PB 1xx batteries - NiCd type. They show the typical
signs of use (they only run the system for about 10 minutes.) Is there
anything that can be done that might get these batteries to at least hold
some charge (say 45 mins or so) or are they just scrap?

Re: PowerBook 140-180c batteries

Hi there,

I have bought two batteries for my 190 PowerBook on eBay for $5 each, at
different times. Now I don't know the difference between the ones you have
and the ones I bought (new "old" pb user), but just thought I'd let you
know.

Cheers,

There's a guy called the Squid, outside of Seattle, who does this as well.

PowerBook AC Adapter Confusion....

2001-07-12 Thread Michael Shaw

Hello to all;

I have been active for a few years on the QuadList and the PPC 603 and SWAP
list but this is my first posting to the PowerBook list.

I have a question that I hope you can help me with.

I am somewhat mysified by the numbers assigned to the PowerBook AC adapters.

I have one of the early 15 watt typeM5140...which I found listed among all
the other PowerBook adapters on the internet.
The total list is:

M5140...15 w
M5651...17 w
M5652...24 w
APS 17 ADP...17 w
M7783...for the Duo
M2693...for the Duo

I recently acquired a QuickTake 150 camera and find in the owners manual a
paragraph that says that this camera also works with the Quicktake AC Adapter
M2851LL/A and the PowerBook AC Adapter "M4662LL/A".

Which of the above PowerBook AC adapters is also known as M4662LL/A ?

The QuickTake camera has an external power requirement of anything from 4.5
Volts DC/1.75 A to 8.0 Volts DC/1.0 A.

The M5140 PowerBook adapter I have is rated at 7.5 Volts DC/2.0 A.

Don't believe it, just because EMMpathy says the batteries aren't good, or
if Intelligent Battery Recondition does either. Run these both several
times in alternation, and then see what Smart Probe in the EMMpathy program
says. If it says the capacity of the battery is anything above zero (up to
1752 mah) keep going, and let it charge on sleep. I've been able to get a
full charge on any battery which didn't register a short, so far.

My experience is. You can read PC ZIP disks fine--just the same as reading
PC diskettes. when you download on the PC, don't do ANYTHING at all to the
file (that means, if it is compressed hqx or bin, leave it compressed) or
you will lose the data fork info that the Mac needs. Put it straight on to
the PC formatted ZIP disk. Take that to your Mac. Put the disk in your Mac
ZIP drive. then you will see the file and you can drop it on Stuffit
Expander or do whatever with it.

I looked at the picture on that site. Why not try a stand for a cookbook?
They come in metal, wood, Plexiglas, etc. You probably would find something
that would provide similar lift, tilt and ventilation.

You likely have the A959 card combo. A nice card. Dload the drivers

The second letter of the serial number is either S or P- S for Sanyo, P for
Panasonic. I don't know the internal differences between the batteries, but
Emmpathy asked for the information when I was trying to make the batteries
take a charge (it didn't work, I guess they were too far gone).

Re: What to do with a Powerbook 170?

2001-07-12 Thread Dana Rottach

I used mine this spring for a statistics course... it runs the math
coprocessor xlispstat pretty well! I also used it to hold a pdf version of a
meeting catalog (American Physical Society March Meeting-- paper catalogs
are about the size of a good size phone book) and that worked fairly well
too, but the search time for the Acrobat reader was *way* too long. I think
that was in large part because it only has 8 meg of real memory.

These are basic questions but I figure I should ask.
Is AppleTalk on?
Do you have file sharing active on both machines?
And, have you shared the drive you want to connect with on each machine?

You don't need to do anything with TCP/IP.

On www.threemacs.com (a good site about networking) they
say when using an ethernet crossover cable with two Macs,
you must select 'ethernet' in the Apple Talk control panels
_simultaneously_ on the two computers. (I'm still using
Localtalk myself -- I'm just too cheap for Ethernet)

PowerBooks, Newtons and IrDA

2001-07-12 Thread David L. Daleke

Regarding the discussion about PB5300-Newton communications, some
Newtons can communicate with IrDA-equipped computers and printers,
including PowerBooks. However, this is restricted to Newton Message
Pads 2x00 and eMates. OMPs and MP1x0s use the Sharp ASK protocol
which is not compatible with IrDA. In addition, IrDA will not work
with the Newton syncing software (i.e. Newton Connection Utilities).
However, there are ways to transfer data and files by IrDA to/from
Newtons using other utilities. Here is an excerpt of the Info-Newt
FAQ that explains how
(http://www.info-newt.com/faq/newton-faq-nos.html#IIIB3c):

>c) Can I use IrDA (infrared) to transfer information between my
>desktop and my 2.x Newton?

Also, a good description of Newton infrared protocols can be found on
the SmartDog web page
(http://www.smartdogsw.com/backtalk/whitepaper.shtml).

Hope this helps,

motherboard problem and offer

2001-07-12 Thread chouston

Still looking for a cheapish 3400 motherboard, as mine seems fried and I'd
like to fix it up to give to a friend.

Long shot: in case anyone on the list is interested, I have a 1400/117
motherboard pulled from a working 1400 that I would love to swap for a
working 3400 motherboard. I can mount the board in the bottom case of the
1400 (in great shape), and also include 8+8MB of RAM and a KB if you like:
all you'd need then is a screen and a G3 upgrade and away you go! :-)

As both PB's are not exactly new, though still super reliable, a swap would
be a nice way to get both books working again without spending any cash!
Nice way to get a cheap 1400/G3, too.

Anyway, if anyone's interested, or knows someone who might be, please email
me offlist. Thanks.

Chris

It depends.

Netscape 4.0 on the PC, for some reason, insists on unbinhexing .hqx
files as it goes. If the resulting file is a .bin file or .sit file,
they're usually ok, but if they're self-extracting files, then they get
hosed.

As the other poster saud, make sure you have PC exchange running on your
Powerbook, and you may have to manually drag and drop the files onto
stuffit Expander to get them extracted, as the things aren't recognized
as stuffit files. (You can set up those extensions in PC Exchange to be
recognized, though.)

If you acn install software on the work PC, there's a great utility
called MacDrive2000 (http://www.mediafour.com ) which is a Mac disk
driver for Windows. Reads Mac formatted zips, floppies, CD's, hard
drives, etc without a hitch. I'm using it on my PC at work, it's great!

It also lets you set up the file/creator type mapping to Windowos file
extensions.

Since we more than occasionally get bewildered faculty saying this
zip/floppy/CD they were sent must be bad because their computer can't
read it, it's turned out really useful...about 70% of the time it's
because it's a Mac formatted disk sent by other bioscience types who are
amazed that we use so many PC's here...

need old PB

2001-07-12 Thread Mark Romberg

Hey, I've got an idea to use an army-surplus 50-cal ammo can as a case for
the innards af an old PowerBook, and I was wondering if anyone has an old PB
180, 190, or Duo 280/2300 with the active color screen that they'd be
willing to part with for a song. The case of course doesn't have to be in
very good condition.

Please contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you have one.

Which 5300 and PB 150

2001-07-12 Thread Anand Keathley

I think it is OK. The seller of the 5300 mobo says the voltage
regulator board is under the track pad, so that has to be the power
supply board. Thank goodness.

I'm hoping to install a 36 Mb memory chip in the 150 to max it out.

Oh, Makmac, thanks for the tech manual offer but I already found a site
and downloaded it last night. There is no mention of a voltage
regulator, just the power supply board. I feel better. Now I just have
to wait for everything to show up and hope all the parts work. Well,
I've always enjoyed rollercoasters.

Thanks,
Anand

Ethernet for two?

2001-07-12 Thread Christopher Morgenstierne

I am interested in connecting my Powerbook 1400c (OS8.5) with my desktop
4400 (8.6) via ethernet. I have a Global Village Pro (modem con 10/base)
card, and a (red) RJ-45 cable with crossed cabeling. The 4400 has internal
10/base card.

When I connect the set-up I cant get any icons of shared files on the
client machine, so no networking. I think (obviously wrongly!) that I do
the right things with appletalk etc. Is there (necessary - I think it is an
option) a TCP issue involved?

I sense that the machnes are physically aware of each other. There are hard
disk reactions on the other one when I do things on one machine - change
shared items etc.

I have tried different things with swiching which is the server etc - no
breakthrough. So, we continue with ye ole serial cable, the nine year old
and I, when we have our Starcraft shoot-outs.

I just acquired a PB5300c, 32Mb RAM (33Mb VM), 750Mb HD. I started
by installing OS 8.5 and updating it to 8.6. I had planned on also
installing OS 8.1 to compare them but after installing 8.6 I decided
to stick with it. I just looked and the OS is using almost 15Mb.
But this is with a few applications loaded, at least on of which is
using system memory. I have found it to be quite workable in this
configuration. I am looking to expand the RAM to 64 and also would
like a bigger HD but as it stands it's working well. One advantage
of OS 8.6 over 8.1 is it has a higher percentage of PPC code which
means it runs faster than 8.1.

I'm and using it now on vacation and the only trouble I have is a
very crappy phone line which makes IP access rather poor.

Thank you.

My wife is wanting to use the 170 in her work. She can
easily keep her contacts and project lists and other
items of records. I don't see a way that she can keep
pix of furniture, fabrics, finished projects, etc. for
lack of space and color.

I will need to go to powerbookguy or OWC or some such,
in the near future to upgrade the hard drive to more
than 40 meg.

I am just thinking of further uses for her while she
is on the road. (For instance, I am setting up our
