Re: 5300 battery from Megamacs?

2002-04-16 Thread Jeffrey Karlsen

There are plenty of these going for $20 or less from NexComp via EBay, e.g.:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2016394003&r=0&t=0&showTu
torial=0&ed=1019104583&indexURL=0&rd=1

But look at the following page:
http://www.megamacs.com/v1/?cat=6&action=view&pid=1187325
2 for 1! and you can get a free copy of Norton SystemWorks 1.0 into the
bargain. I emailed and they confirmed that the battery was a new, unopened
box. To get the two for one, you surrender the ninety-day warranty. Shady?

Before I took apart a PB, I had a couple of years of taking apart
desktops, and was really wary of putting my first RAM chip or HD swap at
the beginning of that. Download a service manual on the specific machine,
follow the instructions, and you'll probably be okay.
BTW, I have a training video of 540 take apart. Is there any way
to share that with the list, without violating copyright extremely? I'm
sure that Apple doesn't sell these any more.

New to PowerBooks & Have Questions

2002-04-16 Thread Hardy Menagh

I'm a transplant from other LEM lists, being familiar with everything
from Pluses to 7100/80s. I'm due for surgery and bought an "as is" eBay
540c, my first PowerBook, to take with me. It works great and came with
a 770 MB HD but only 12 MB RAM. The modem was unused and came with the
software still sealed. I put iCab on the 540c and then upgraded the
system from 8 to 8.1. Thanks Apple.

The batteries showed no life signs so I opened the cases and charged
them directly. I also cleared a shorted cell by applying short bursts of
high ma. to that cell. I'm now getting 1 hr, 15 min. from one pack and
30 min. from the other. If these were NiCds, which I am very familiar
with, I would know that they are likely to fail completely at any time.
Is the same true for NiMHs that have lost this kind of capacity? I have
no experience with these critters.

DigiKey is selling 10 Panasonic HHR-210A cells for $51.13. Is there any
place I can get equivalent cells for less? I'm on a very tight budget.

I understand that one needs to carry a laptop in sleep mode as he passes
through airport security. Are there any other tips that will speed
things along/prevent hassles etc? My airport advice comes from books
written well before 9/11.

Thanks in advance,

But don't forget the serial cable will work on your desktop mac, too
.Which fits my particular use and setup, the best.

For digital cameras a compact flash or smartmedia PCMCIA adapter works
best, imo. Much faster than serial, and the compact flash version cost
me $11 at a local electronics store.

And although some etailers list both "SCSI to USB" and "USB to SCSI"
adapters, don't get excited- you cannot find a device to go from the laptop
SCSI port to provide a USB port (unlike SCSI to ethernet solutions). For
tech reasons I am not aware of, there is just no way to do it (per Belkin,
anyway, who would know if anyone would).

There's just no USB solution for 1400 or 5300 families.

However, for my new Olympus digital camera (for example) there is a mac
serial connection kit, $20. So for some peripherals there is a way around
the need for a USB port.

You can scoot to http://www.datamem.com and click on the Clearance
entry, and find the LapisColor MV-16EN for 5300. $19, you're not gonna
find a cheaper ethernet card anywhere.

Mine is on order, and I'll let everyone know how it goes. (as soon as it
gets here...it has my 32mb upgrade too, which I'm waiting for before
nuking and reinstalling everything.

Intro and questions

2002-04-16 Thread PookLaRoux

Hello everyone!

It's nice to find a list for my kind of tech. I'm the
proud new owner of a used 5300c -- just exactly what I
wanted (We run a 6500 and a 6400 desktop systems.)

It came with a klunky but usable external scsi CD-rom,
and as soon as I got it home I upgraded to 8.6 from
8.1, which is what the desktop systems are running. I
also picked up a Farallon Air Dock Ir unit which I was
hoping to hook up to one of the desktops, but I've run
into some problems with that.

Two main questions for right now: That Air Dock. The
documentation that came with it says you need to be
running 7.1 or later, but it talks about the network
panel and other things which I believe got wiped away
with the later os's. The 6500 doesn't even see the
dock when it is connected to the serial and the
passthru adb. I think I need a later version of the
airdock driver or the airpath software, and I think
there is one. Does anyone have one of these running?

The other thing that would be helpful: the cafe where
I do a lot of writing has a free dsl connection. I use
a cable modem hooked up to the 6500 at home - so I
don't know a thing about dsl, and haven't had to think
about a regular dial up modem for over a year. I have
a 14.4 pc card modem for the 5300, what else will I
need to take advantage of the dsl connection at the
cafe? Do I need an ethernet card, and will a pc
card/ethernet type device work on my pb?

I also have some usb devices that I'd like to be able
to use on the go with the 5300. Is there a pc card to
usb device that's worth looking at?

By way of introduction, I write and maintain a
website, my husband uses the computers for graphics.
Lately, I've been getting more into using the graphics
stuff as I slide over toward digital photography, and
he's sliding over toward getting into more audio uses
for the 6400.

Don't forget to try putting the Cd in the drive BEFORE booting the mac, so
that when the Mac polls the drive it find a volume ready to go. And also
try with a pressed CD, not just a CD-R.

For some reason, with my 600e external drive on the 540 and the 1400,
that's the only way I've been able to make it work. If I boot the CPU with
the CDROM drive empty, nothing gets mounted when I insert a Cd later.
Despite the drive showing up with SCSIProbe, Drive setup, FWB, whatever.

I second his suggestion for SCSI Probe. That is the single most useful

As for drivers, there's a simple resedit hack for making Apple CD

Dead/dying batteries...?

2002-04-16 Thread Gene Osburn

I've accumulated several non-functioning batteries for 68K PowerBooks.
One M3053 for PB 100, two M5654 for PB 140-180, two M1906 for PB 5xx,
one or two M7782 and one or two M1499 for Duos. I'm not experienced in
rebuilding batteries, but possibly someone here is...?
Anybody willing to offer something in trade for the lot? Looking for
working Duo and 5xx batteries, Duo PRAM batteries, any Duo accessories,
various interesting odds and ends, etc.

No, the Sonnet works with ALL the ROMs!

- Sometimes there are conflict problems with running OS 8.6 or 9.0, but in
fact these never happen with the old ROM (in 117Mhz and some 133 Mhz'es),
but with some of the later ones (other 133 and all 166s).

- I would definitely go for one of the good screens ('c').
Next decission would be either to pick a cheap 117c (with CD) and get a
Sonnet G3 (333Mhz is fine, I think they are about 2.500 swedish kroner) and
a bigger hd (117s often came with only 1.3 Gb)
OR
a 166 with 2 Gb hd and keep both prcessor and hd.

I have a 166c with Sonnet G3 (333), 2Ghd and 64mb ram. I am VERY happy with
it. I think the biggest setback is becomming not being able to connect to
USB of firewire devices. (So maybe a second hand coloured iBook instead of
upgrading a 1400??? - though their looks and keyboard are not y are not
half as nice!!!)

Good hunting,
