Re: software piracy

2002-06-11 Thread Beverly Woods

I understand your point, but that does not make it legal to copy and
distribute the material without written permission of the copyright holder.

As a musician and writer, I've had to give a lot of thought to such issues.
If you buy one of my music CDs, does that give you the right to copy it for
your friends? No, although plenty of people do it. If my album is out of
print right now, does that make it OK? How about if you go on a music list
and offer to copy my work for a small fee for people who want it?

I'm sorry if I seem harsh about this. I would like to see abandonware
released to the public as much as any legacy Mac user. But until it is
released into the public domain, I also have a responsibility to try to make
sure that the content of the Powerbooks list is legal, and the offer in
question was not.

Copyright Soapbox :)

>Especially with older software, it can be so much of a pain in the neck to
>install, that I'd gladly pay extra to have software pre-installed, as long
>as I own or can obtain a license

This whole copyrighting/starving artists thing is really getting up my nose.
While I completely agree that ripping off software is just plain wrong, I'm
afraid greed is unfortunately the main motivating factor here. I don't think
I've ever heard of anyone taking a couple of hours to photocopy a paperback
to save the $10 cost of buying it new, even if they steal the time and paper
from their employer. It's just not worth the trouble. If the price of music
CDs and software etc is reasonably low, people will just BUY it. But if large
corporations and other businesses encourage high pricing for "Professional"
software, then we can expect to pay hundreds of dollars for Quark or PS etc.

Having had to completely replace as well as upgrade my OS, hardware, and software
so many times over a mere 15 years I've lost count, I have an increasingly difficult
time dredging up sympathy for the companies to whom I've paid thousands of my after-
tax dollars just to "keep up" in my business. I cranked out just as much material on
vellum using a pencil prior to 1984.

Um, oh yeah; I do a lot of this on a Powerbook (just to keep it in context haha)!

I've got the Lucent connecting to my Airport 2 Base Station. The reason I went with
the more-expensive alternative is that the ABS will do Appletalk—my Pismo and my son's

also do Appletalk, but I have not confirmation on this.

This sounds to me like a Power Manager problem.

Try restarting the book and hold down the command-option-P-R keys
to reset the PRAM.
Hold the keys down and make them chime at least_10_ times before
you let the book restart.

If that doesn't clear the problem then I would suggest that you
remove all power from the machine and disconnect the Pram battery for
an hour or so to fully discharge the PRAM.

If you are uncomfortable opening up your book to do this you could just leave
it without power for about a week and probably accomplish the same thing.

Aloha, Ken

Use Disk Copy, make images of the floppies, burn images to a CD.

Insert CD into the TiBook, double-click on the first floppy image and
double-click on install. On a Ti, you could easily mount all 17 floppies
at once for a nearly interrupt-less installation.

This worked with MS Office, back when version 4 came on 34 or so floppies.

You *really* want to do that anyway, since floppies die easily.

Of course banning the guy offering to duplicate abandonware unto

buyer must delete software

2002-06-11 Thread affirmed

I understand that this type of sale undoubtedly leads to people using
software for which they own no license.

But I can think of circumstances in which I would gladly pay extra to have
pre-installed software for which I own a license.

I use M$ FoxPro 2.6 for the vast majority of my work and own a number of
copies of 2.5 and 2.6 for Mac, and later editions of Visual FoxPro for PCs.

I recently got a TiBook for work, and had to figure out how to install over
17 floppies worth of FoxPro onto a machine without a floppy drive. Not to
mention the hours I wasted waiting to feed the next floppy.

Especially with older software, it can be so much of a pain in the neck to
install, that I'd gladly pay extra to have software pre-installed, as long
as I own or can obtain a license.

At a job we used to work at, I administered network and supported a boatload
of macs running photoshop, QuarkXPress, etc. Along with a number of fonts
that we purchased, plug-ins, utilities, etc. Getting new machines in was a
major hassle, especially when we started upgrading to B&W G3s. We used
QuarkXPress 3.3x, which we owned many legal copies of, but only on floppy.
It wasn't worth a couple of hundred bucks per box to upgrade to QXP 4. But I
would gladly have paid out of my own pocket to not have dealt with the
installs.

What is the Lucent Silver card connecting to? I've thought about getting a wireless

Re: software piracy

2002-06-11 Thread Rob

That's funny, because that's exactly what I was thinking as well. Not too
long ago you could download these updates off of their website. Banning this
guy seems a little drastic since it sounded to me like he was trying to help
out rather than be a pirate. There are far easier ways of downloading
software from the web than on these lists.

As for people buying machines with software on them, I would give the lions
share of the blame to the buyer in most cases. It is up to them to delete
software without licenses, but I'm sure many do not, simply declaring the
software came with the machine.

Re: Narcoleptic 520c Won't Spin Down

2002-06-11 Thread Hardy Menagh

On Mon, Jun 10, 2002, 11:19pm, Donna Hood Pointer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
kindly responded:

===
I have a 520. I don't think the behavior you describe is "sleep", but
rather screen dimming. As I recall, this is a battery saving feature. It
is not necessary to have the screen at full brightness while it is
starting up or when you are opening a file, because you cannot do
anything else until that procedure finishes. The screen display uses a
lot of battery juice.

---
This isn't just dimming. It goes black. When I hit a key, the screen
flashes and then rebuilds, the way it would when it recovers from sleep.
The track pad is unavailable or the cursor may be jerky during this time
and I may only have a second or so to use it before it goes black again,
or it may allow me to work for a few minutes before going black.

===
If you have the sleep controls set to "never" it probably would not spin
down the hard drive. Do you have the control strip item that says "spin
down the hard drive"?

---
Yes, when I click and release on it, the "active" lines disappear from
the icon and it says it's off but it goes right on spinning. If I set it
to sleep after a specified time, The screen darkens at the right time
but the drive will continue to spin as long as I leave it powered on.

===
If you have Norton it checks all sorts of things on the drive. I've
heard of a PB taking a long time to sleep or shut down with Norton
installed and file backup (I've forgotten what Norton calls that) turned
on.
Donna Pointer-- iMac, ergo iAm

---
I don't have Norton on this drive and the Disk Tools floppy is standard.
Since this drive worked fine on another 520c and is unchanged and since
this 520c behaves the same way booted from a Disk Tools floppy, I think
it must be hardware related. Possibly bad ROM?
