Re: Need AOL 3.0 on floppy for my Powerbook 190

2002-07-15 Thread artminimal

Bruce,

Only AOL can send you the floppy. The older ones do not work, they have
bad aol numbers and can never be used.

I have called them in the past and asked for the 3.0 which was mailed
out free of charge on a floppy and it worked right away on my Mac 150
laptop with no problems.

goodluck,

Re: duo ethernet

2002-07-15 Thread Frank Modica

"EN/SC requires Asantetalk drivers. I think I got them here somewhere.
p-mail me."

I have the installer for the Asante adapter, so I'll plug in the adapter
and run that application.

"Well I don't think your system is seeing it if ethernet isn't presented as
an option. I've used EN/SC adapters but it's been a while. Have the drivers
loaded? Has it worked in the past?

When the duo boots up, the EN/SC icon flashes across the screen while all
the extensions load. Part of the problem seems to be with Appletalk.
Ethernet is a not offered as a choice when I open the Appletalk CP. If I
update OS 8.0 to 8.1, will the update provide the drivers for Appletalk so
ethernet becomes an option?
Or do I need a more recent version of OT/PPP? I am running 1.0 on the duo
but have the installer for 1.1.1.

When the duo was running 8.5.1, I was able to use the Asante adapter and
file share with my 6100, but I had problems with the hard drive and had to
initialize it. I had experienced some problems trying to install OS over
SCSI Disk Mode, so I "kit-bashed" the operating system, patching it
together through diskette loads with my floppy adapter. Over the weekend I
was able to share the whole installer for 8.0 from my 6100 to the duo using
SCSI Disk modem and the installation worked except for problems with
ethernet and modem port issues with PPP (that problem will be addressed
after I get ethernet enabled!!!)

If you are trying to do email, why not hunt down a copy of Claris Emailer
1.3 or 1.4? You won't have to mess around with the RAM hog AOL software.

Need AOL 3.0 on floppy for my Powerbook 190

2002-07-15 Thread lupine blue

Hi, everyone -- I am trying to get my beloved
Powerbook 190 to the point that I can send and receive
email. I now have a PCMCIA card and an AOL account
from my girlfriend I can use, but I've been told the
highest version of AOL my 190 will handle is 3.0 --
and I don't have a CD-ROM drive, just a floppy
drive.Does anyone have any idea where I can get a copy
of AOL 3.0 for Macintosh on floppy? I've tried calling
AOL and have gotten contradictory messages from them,
including an inaccurate phone number to call and order
the software for 3.0.I can't find anywhere on the AOL
site to download 3.0. Everyone keeps just telling me
to ditch my Powerbook and upgrade to a newer laptop,
but I do have reactions to the EMFs on many machines,
and I love writing on my 190. I don't need to handle
attachments or anything large on email, just plain
text messages. So -- if you have any idea how I can get
3.0 on floppy -- any site on the Internet where I can
download it? -- OR any other ISP that will support
access for my Powerbook, I'd be very very grateful!
I'm willing to pay for you to mail the floppies to me
if you have an old AOL disk lying around. Thanks!!!Bruce

Re: going to London

2002-07-15 Thread Daniel Sirks

The iBook runs on European current. We came back to AZ in May, 2002. I used
my PB5300 plugged in every day in England and Holland. All you need is the
correct adapter. A packet of adapters, about 4 of them and all usable in
Europe, is about $8.00 at AAA offices here. No need to change voltage. Just
plug the adapter in between your iBook power cord and the wall socket. If the
holes fit, and there is an adapter that will in that package, then you are in
business. Don't see if they are cheaper in Europe. In Britain they price
things as if a pound sterling is equivalent to a US dollar. It takes one and
one-half dollars to buy one pound sterling. My advice is don't wait and do be
prepared to spend more for everything in Europe. Even worse now that the
dollar has gone down.

Your iBook's AC adapter will happily take what just about any AC outlet in
the world feeds it.

All you really need is a power lead, just buy one when you get there. It'll
be cheaper than buying one in the US.

Actually, one can.

Even if Apple post the material on their web site as a free download, that
doesn't mean they forfeit their copyright on it, and if they state that it
is illegal to distribute the material in any way, than that's that and these
CDs, people offering to email them to one another and all the other

Better yet, get the right cell phone to begin with. My Motorola
StarTAC just needs a serial cable (it is expensive as you noted).
The modem is built in to the phone. I've been using it lately and it
works fairly well, even at 70MPH. It's limited to 14,400.

Good Drive Reference Site

2002-07-15 Thread David R.

I came across a really good web site showing configurations for almost any
hard drive on the market. This isn't specifically pbook related, but
realize it can be helpful to any computer user, so I thought I'd pass on to
fellow listers. I had found it a year ago but the server it was on went
down. But I succeeded in relocating its new site a few days ago using a
refined Google search. The page is DEFINITELY well worth visiting and
book-marking for future reference. Some of the selections also a provide
simple drawing of jumper settings, such as for every Quantum Drive
manufactured.

http://www.aquascape.com/theref/hard_drives/mh__main.html

It might initially load slow but will eventually come up.

Dave
