The printer CCLs go in the Printer Descriptions folder in the Extensions

My PB 1400 won't turn off!

2002-08-20 Thread Sean McGroty

I've got a really strange problem with my PB 1400 - it won't power off
at all.

If I shut down from within the Finder, it restarts.

I have Password Security turned on. If I click cancel, which normally
shuts off the computer, it immediately restarts.

If I let the Password Security dialog time out and auto shut down, it
restarts.

If I press the power button on the back at any time, it restarts.

If I remove the internal keyboard and power on with the button on the
back, then power off, it restarts.

If I remove power (battery and power adapter), then plug the battery or
adapter back in, it restarts.

It's not a stuck power key, since once I boot normally, the dialog box
associated with the power key does not appear, also, the problem appears
without any sort of keyboard attached.

I've zapped the PRAM with TechTool, didn't do anything.

I tried removing all the RAM cards.

The system does go to sleep, though.

The last thing I did before the problem appeared was run SerialCheck
with a UPS attached to the serial port using a DIN-8 to DB-25 adapter.

The system itself has a Sonnet 400 MHz upgrade, has been recently
upgraded to 64 MB RAM, and has an IBM 4.3 GB hard disk. The 1400 worked
fine until some time after the upgrades were performed, so I don't think
they have anything to do with my situation.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Printer issues with 8.1

Hi, everyone,

I feel dumb as a box of rocks asking this, but I need some assitance. I
recently upgraded to OS 8.1 and now there is no way to choose my printer
(Stylewriter II) in the Chooser. In 7.6.x, printing wasn't a problem. I didn't
realize I had this problem until I tried to print a letter this week! Whoops!

I have gone online and picked up drivers for both the II and the 1500, which is
supposed to work well with the II, but I don't know how to get my Chooser to
recognize them, or where to stash them in my system folder in order for them to
show up in the Chooser. (The files are just sitting on my desktop -- this is
where I get stumped and feel silly).

I appreciate any help very much, as school starts on Thursday and I'd like to
be able to print from my Mac. Thanks a lot!

Not difficult ... not easy, either.

You'll need a T-8 driver.

Remove the two Display Bumbers (top of display).

Remove the two Name Plates (bottom of display).

Remove the four T-8 screws.

Carefully remove the (front) Bezel/Housing.

Come to think of it, there are probably some lower case parts which need to
be removed first.

The complete procedure is in the PowerBook 190/5300 Series repair manual.

This sounds like the AC plug on the motherboard is loose. If you are
willing to take your computer apart, it should be easy to fix with a
soldering iron and a bit of solder.

I take it this means you haven't even launched the software. Hold
down the space bar when you boot up and Extension manager will come
up. Use it to turn off the PaperPort software. Once you've started
up you could try putting a space or underline in front of the name of
the PaperPort software to make it show up first or last in the boot
process. Changing the boot order is about the only thing you can do
with something like this (if now more up to date version is
available). After you rename it open the Extension Manager Control
Panel and re-activate the software then restart.

Re: Powerbook 520 batteries not charging

2002-08-20 Thread mac

I know of a couple of things that could be the problem.
The first is, a bad battery. Emmpathy (yes, two 'm's) would
likely be able to tell you if that's the problem.
Also, the power supplies that plug into these machines have
two circuits, one for running and the other for charging. I
have a semi-broken power supply that will run the machine but
not charge it.

The OS and other stuff shouldn't affect it. After all, they charge
when the machine isn't running.

Hi Just for the people that were interested i got a total of 4hours and
35mins use from the fully charged 3400 li-ion battery, in my 190cs.
It even give me a low battery warning ( then literally 2 seconds before it
shut down).

All the time i was useing the Mac i kept the screen on 256 colours and let
the disk spin down on its own out of that time the Mac was asleep for 15
mins whilst i had lunch and it was used for email, web browseing, word
docs, viewing some pictures from a disc, and playing solitaire.
i did not have the ac adapter connected and when i put the battery back in
my 3400 it started to charge ok and has taken a full charge.

The main battery keeps the PRAM battery charged, not vice versa.

If the PRAM battery is truly dead, then startup will be a problem, until the
PRAM is partially charged by the attached ac adapter through the main battery.

Repeated application cycles of Intelligent Battery Recondition (from
Apple), Emmpathy (Someone on this list should know a link), and Battery
Amnesia can often revive dead
batteries. As Miracle Max sez: "There's a big difference between dead,
and almost dead!"

Was there ever an internal modem made
> that was faster than 19kbs?

Nope.

How about using the PCMCIA
> like slot in the left battery compartment?

IF you're looking deep into the compartment to see it, you need the
PCMCIA adapter, comes in three varieties model A, B, and C.

If you have the adapter already (IE you've got two slots on the side of
the thing) all you need is the PCMCIA adapter software from Apple, and
any 16-bt card with a mac-compatible driver will work. This includes
flash adapters (no software needed) many modems, some ethernet adapters,
and allegedly wirelss cards like the orinoco silver, though I've yet to
be able to get mine to work properly on my 540C.

The adapters are available, and you'll need the model C if you ever want
to upgrade to the powerpc CPU upgrade (and they're priced accordingly),
but if you're not, the A or B models will work. The B model is better
than the A, as it fixed some bugs.

If your 190 has "AA" added as a suffix to its serial number, it has already
been through the recall for powering and other problems.

One of the fixes added in that recall was to replace the motherboard OR to
replace the power connector so that intermittent connections such as you
describe won't happen.

My 190s/5300s all have this "AA" and none of them have powering problems. In
fact, they are completely trouble-free.

I believe the 190/5300 recall is long since over.

Sounds promising, but again, I would worry that you
might damage the Power Supply by trying to use a L-ion
battery in a machine that wasn't designed for it...
Not sure if just running off the battery would cause
problems or not... Most likely the problems will come
if you attempt to charge the battery in the 190
L-ion, NiMh and NiCd batteries all have different
methods / requirements for recharging... thus, one of
the main differences in AC/Adapters and Power
Supplies. (Note, when I say power Supply, I'm not
talking about your AC/Adapter / Brick, I'm refering to
the circuit board inside the machine...)

Anyway, I'm not sure if it will damage the system or
not. I'm thinking it may not damage it right away,
but may become a problem long term??? Who knows, I've
seen some power supply modules in certain models
become very finicky and not last throuhg even the
slightest change. On the other hand... it might run
for a long time and you may never experience a
problem. If you do try to charge that L-ion in the
190, I would be very curious to know how long the
charge is good for. I wouldn't be surprised to see a
decrease in overall battery life becasue of the
different charging methods. (Does the original
battery have the same number of cells as the L-ion?)

I'm not sure I'd attempt running a L-ion battery in a
PB that wasn't designed for it for the fear of
damaging a circuit board which could be costly to
replace or difficult to find. Thats just my $.02

Good luck with your experiment.

Cheers,
Sionnach

Powerbook 190

2002-08-20 Thread Georg Portenkirchner

Hello all!

As I am new to the list I don't know if you already talked about this, but
as I heard this problem occurs quite often. I got a Powerbook 190 that is
in good shape.
Only there is a problem with the powersupply. If I move the Powerbook and
the plug moves, the Powerbook gets of.
Is there a way to reapir this. Maybe there is a instruction page somewhere
in the net?

Thank you in advance

Georg

P.S.: Hope you understand what I wannna say cause english is not my mother
tongue.

Yep, fine. I'm running my Lombard off a 36w/1.5A Duo 280/2300c adapter
right now. They won't charge batteries unless the PB is off or asleep,
but they work just fine (and cheap too).

Cheers,
