Yeah I tried opening the adapter and it seems to be sealed - no screws or tabs or
anything. I also tried resetting the power manager and that didn't work. I'll try a
new adapter I guess

2002-08-28 Thread c d

A similar thing happened to my 5300c. It was working fine before the
trackpad broke and I brought it in under the REA. When I got it back, it
didn't work at all - not under the adapter, not under the battery (which I
knew was toasted). After much frustration, I narrowed it down to the
adapter. I took a multimeter and tried to get a voltage reading off it (the
5300's is 24V) but there was nothing. So I opened up the adapter and got a
voltage reading right at the base of the cord, so the plug itself was bad -
I cut it off and soldered on a cheapo part I got at Radio Shack. It's ugly
(I had to cut some of the plastic on the plug to get it to fit in the case)
but it the computer works fine now!

dead 1400: ac adapter?

2002-08-28 Thread Andy265245

Hey all

My 1400cs just bit the dust. I think it might be the ac adapter, but I wanted to get
some second opinions. It won't do anything when I push the power button. It clicks
when I push the reset button, and clicks again when I release it. Every third time or
so that I push the reset button, it chimes like it's going to start, but then goes
dead again when I release the button. Every time I push the reset button, the screen
flashes. It does this whether the ac adapter is plugged in or not. The book is
completely dead plugged in but with the battery out. Just before it died I noticed it
was running on the battery even though it was plugged in, which is what makes me think
it's the adapter, and the battery has just run down and doesn't have the juice to
start the computer. Think that's what it is? Or is there something else I'm not
considering? I've tried wiggling all the plugs looking for a short but everything is
solid. I can feel something moving inside the adapter when I shake it gently. Thanks
for any insight in advance.

Cheers,
Andy

Er, you must mean that he can swap motherboards, right? The Kanga
G3/3500 doesn't have a CPU daughter card (unlike the 5x0, 1400,

A whole mobo swap would be required. I understand that the original

But seriously, get a cheap Wallstreet, and save yourself the hassle.
Plus, you have future options on the Wallstreet that the 3400 will

I'm looking for version 8 as it supported 68k. Version 9 is PPC only - and that
doesn't work very well on a PB540c ;'>

While technically correct, Peter left out that all you need is an
AAUI-10BaseT adapter, such as:

Check the LEM-Swap list, you should be able to pick one up for <$15.

Linux on 5300...

2002-08-28 Thread Andrew Kershaw

I know, heresy! ;-)

Anyone ever tried it? I guess you can load up MkLinux on a 5300 and
it will work OK, but I'm more interested in monolithic linux. I've
heard it's possible to install Yellow Dog Linux on a 6100 if you get
the nubus enabled kernal which is supposed
to enable you to run a PPC linux distro on the Power Macintosh 6100,
7100, 8100 and compatibles, PowerBook 1400, 2300, 5300 and Performa
5200, 6200, 6300... But I don't actually know anyone who has done it
to a PowerBook. Anyone done it?

Curiously, Mandrake's database says it is "supported" on the
5300

Don't know about that, but maybe it's using the nubus kernel too

I was thinking about making my 5300ce (whenever I get it - bought on
the swap list and awaiting delivery) a dual boot machine - what do you
guys think, too much effort? ;-)

Peace,
Drew

DVD was possible on all the Wallstreets, provided you had the
DVD/MPEG-2 decoder card in a CardBus slot and the DVD-ROM module
installed in a bay...

It's entirely concievable that the 3400 could handle DVD if you could
get your hands on a decoder card, version 1 (hacked to run on the
3400) of the Apple DVD player software (only version to support
hardware decoders, AFAIK), and a DVD-ROM that will fit in the 3400's
expansion bay... The decoder card will run you ~$100 on eBay. Don't
know where you would get the DVD-ROM, but I could see it costing
around 200-300... You're close to the price of one of those 5"
jobbers...

>For DVD watching on the road, a portable unit (one of those 5" screen
jobbers) >would be your best bet.

Yeah, I agree here too. Especially since you probably wouldn't be
able to watch an entire movie on the 3400 before the battery dies.
But then again, some of those 5" jobbers really suck in the screen
quality department.

Peace,
Drew

Any Ethernet connection to the PB500 series must be made through an AAUI
(Apple AUI) connector.

Later PBs and PMs had RJ45 only.

The primary reason for the PB500, and concurrently offered PowerMacs, having
an AAUI interface is PeeCees of that same era were using AUI interfaces. With
an AAUI or AUI interface, either RJ45 or BNC 'net connections are possible.

Now that RJ45s are the de-facto standard for all machines and all 'nets (10,
100, 1000), there is no reason to offer BNC compatibility, so the UTP
connector and its associated interface (which resided in the AAUI on the
PB500, et. al.) were built into new machines.

PB 3400c button and CD-ROM

2002-08-28 Thread gponz

Hi everybody...

I have a couple of problems with my 3400c.

First, the button stopped working correctly, if I press it
lightly (as I did before) nothing happens, I have to press
it really hard to get the "click". It feels as if something
is loose in there. Has this happened to anybody? Is there an
easy solution to this?

Second, the CD-ROM module, although it works right, doesn't
open when I press the eject button. I have to put a paper
clip in the little hole to get it to open. How can I fix
this?

Thanks for the help.

Gabriel

PD... everybody seems to be talking about system 8.x here.
I've had system 9.1 in my powerbook for a long time now and
it works perfect. Very stable and compatible with all my
software.

500 series battery fix software

2002-08-28 Thread Tim Allen

Hi,

After the hassle I went through finding this stuff, I thought I'd help out
by posting the following to my webspace:

LindBU500 Folder
BatteryAmnesia 1.5.2
EMMpathy 2.0
Intelligent Battery Recondition

It's available here:

http://www.zen8595.zen.co.uk/pbsoft/

If anyone has EMMpathy 2.1 can they let me know?

After using all the above the battery in my 520 came back to life, which in
turn brought the PRAM battery back as well. Hope this helps...

What
This has been "conquered" long ago, it is only a capacitor that fails
(C28 from memory, 100uf @ 50V I think), once you have removed the PSU
it is a 5 minute job to replace it and have your dock working like
new.
NB try to replace it with a low ESR capacitor rated at 105 deg C for a
longer life.
Ben.
(also if you check the archives you will find full details of this
standard repair.)
