powerbook 520c/520 monitor

2002-09-03 Thread bob

I have a powerbook 520c upgraded to ppc that i am unable to see the
screen. I also have a 520, i switched screens and both work ok on the
520.
When the grayscale screen is on the 520 ppc, you can hold it in sunlight
and see the screen, the only thing that you can see that is instantly
wrong is at the bottom of the screen the brightness window is showing.
It will go away for a little while if you try to adjust it with the
brightness control on the side of the monitor but it will return shortly
and you never have a change in the screen. Also you are unable to see
or adjust the contrast control.
When the screens are mounted on the 520 they both work and are visible.

The 520 ppc is operating 8.5
the 520 is operating 8.1

Anybody had this problem before or got a idea as what to try??
Thank You, Bob

PowerBook Video adapter

2002-09-03 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Ok, so I just got my neato 5300ce. I've been playing with it all day
long, and I'm currently trying to load up the WaveLAN silver drivers
so I can use it on my WiFi network... Which leaves my 5300cs still
completely headless with a broken LCD ribbon cable. I do have the
original video card, though, supporting external monitors. So my
question is this:

If I get a video adapter (to fit the funky connector on the back of
the 'cs) to attach a Mac monitor, zap the PRAM, then start up, will
the external monitor come to life? Will it mirror, or is it a true
second monitor? Since the 'cs is headless, I can't very well open the
Monitors control panel to change settings if the external display does
not mirror the built-in one... :-(

2nd question: Exactly which cable do I need to attach the monitor?
Is the adapter the same for the 5x0 line? Any other PowerBooks share
the same connector?

Thanks for the info...
Drew

Hi Peter,

Was this a 5300 from a dealer and if so who ?

About 2 weeks ago a dealer posted a special on 5300's and 3400's too, and I wonder
if you bought one of those ?

I was tempted to get one until I saw your post.

Hope to hear from you.

5300ce Special Problems - Was: PowerBook Video adapter

2002-09-03 Thread PeterH5322

In a message dated 9/3/02 7:49:24 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Well, I'll not name names in public, but yes, there were these four posts:

1) a $99 special on 5300ce's, posted to this List; I responded to this one,

2) a lower priced super special just for selected List subscribers; I
responded to this one, too, perhaps (not sure ... see below) after I had
already responded to the first one,

3) a notice, apparently to responders to (1) and (2), that shipment would be
delayed due to personal problems, and

4) a $99 special on 5300ce's posted to the USENET,

in that order.

Or, possibly, (2) came before (1) ... it's been a while.

Right now I have 7.6.1 loaded onto the hard drive from a retail pack CD-ROM
which supports all Macs, including the 5300 series.

I'm using my own battery, my own charger and my own floppy drive, all
borrowed from my 5300c.

As I mentioned, the floppy drive supplied was completely crashed ... it
destroyed my 7.6.1 Disk Tools diskette the first time I tried to boot
(remember, there is NOTHING supplied on the hard drive, so a normal hard
drive boot will fail), so I had to use a backup Disk Tools diskette (and my
own, known-good drive, of course).

The power system using the supplied battery and charger is problematic.
Sometimes it would start to boot, but would then immediately power itself off.

Substituting my own battery and charger seemed to solve these problems ... I
think.

But ... there could still be a power module problem as sometimes an attempt
to boot results in a flup flup flup sound, not unlike that produced by a
Mac 512K or a Mac Plus which has a bad analog board.

Gr.

I will attempt to run all the usual suspects of diagnostic tools before I
deem this machine to be unusable.

Clearly, something is going to have to be done about the floppy drive (not
that I use floppies all that much ;-) ), even if everything else works
themselves out.

On a VERY positive note ... the high definition screen provided by the 5300ce
is a SIGNIFICANT improvement over the 5300c and, of course, the 5300cs.

Stay tuned ;-)

OT(?) 5300ce issues (was Re: PowerBook Video adapter)

2002-09-03 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Well, I'm not entirely sure this is the proper forum for this
discussion. I don't want to disparage anyone, and to the vendor's
credit, I have done other business there with no issues. But seeing
as how it was advertised on a LEM list, you probably all saw the ad
for the 5300ce deal a few weeks back.

My 5300ce from that deal does have it's own share of issues. It's in
terrible cosmetic shape (case is scuffed badly, and there is a great
big serial number engraved on the left side in big white letters about
1/4 tall. F-UGLY!)

The case bottom belongs to a 190 series book, not a 5300 series book.
The serial number is worn away and replaced w/ a sticker bearing (I
presume) the correct serial number for the 'book. Sort of makes me
think my 5300ce is a frankenbook, put together piece-meal like from
spare parts.

Oh, and the insides of the case are in no better shape - plastic tabs
broken off everywhere.

Needless to say, I transplanted the guts to my pristine condition
(though unworkable, thanks to a broken display data cable) 5300cs
case. I had some initial trouble upgrading the OS, but that's normal
w/ a machine w/ NO CD-ROM and no built-in ethernet...

So, I'm not entirely happy. Email me off list if you want more
details about the transaction.

Indeed, caveat emptor.

Peace,
Drew

P.S. - I still need help w/ that video adapter question! Any takers?

Nor do I.

My 5300ce from that deal does have it's own share of issues. It's in
terrible cosmetic shape (case is scuffed badly, and there is a great big

Ah ... but it IS the actual serial number of the unit. At least it was on my
unit.

The case bottom belongs to a 190 series book, not a 5300 series book. The
serial number is worn away and replaced w/ a sticker bearing (I presume) the
correct serial number for the 'book. Sort of makes me think my 5300ce is a
frankenbook, put together piece-meal like from spare parts.

Mine had two serial number stickers ... an Apple one and a Avery stick-on one
... both bearing the same number, and these being the same number that was
engraved on the side.

Oh, and the insides of the case are in no better shape - plastic tabs broken
off everywhere.

I haven't broken the seal of my unit ... I might have to exchange it or
return it if the power and other problems don't correct themselves in the
course of time.

Right now, the machine is working OK on my floppy drive, my battery and my
charger.

Needless to say, I transplanted the guts to my pristine condition (though
unworkable, thanks to a broken display data cable) 5300cs case. I had some
initial trouble upgrading the OS, but that's normal w/ a machine w/ NO CD-ROM
and no built-in ethernet ...

I plan on doing a mind meld as well, so I'm not as concerned with the
case's cosmetics issues.

I would have been concerned if the screen was flawed, but the screen cleaned
up very nicely.

So, I'm not entirely happy. Email me off list if you want more details about
the transaction.

Indeed, caveat emptor.

I think things will work out ... I'm optimistic at this point.

I plan to extensively retest the provided battery and charger, as the basic
machine now seems to be reasonably functional.

If all is well ... and I do hope it is ... then the only issue is the crashed
floppy drive.

Peter.

HELP: PB1400 with Viking 56k PC-card modem

2002-09-03 Thread Jose V. Gavila

Hello!

I am the proudly new owner of a Powerbook 1400cs. It came with a partial OS
7.5.3 installation so I got rid of it and installed 7.6.1. As I were not
able to get the modem going and I saw in a web page about the 1400 that OS
8.5 was best suited for the 1400, I went for it (currently I only have 16Mb
installed so 8.6 was not suitable, as it needs 24Mb to install)

I have installed the modem script and have configured everything (PPP,
modem port, ...), following the manufacturer's guide. But the system keeps
telling me there is no answer from the modem (I got same error with 7.6.1).
Is there a terminal program I could use to check Hayes commands?. Any hint
about getting a PC-card modem going in the 1400?

Thanks!

Question about 1400cs display

2002-09-03 Thread Jose V. Gavila

Hello!

My 1400cs is very nice except for the modem trouble I have commented (see
my previous message) and an LCD issue: mainly on gray patterns I get some
kind of 'interference', as scanning lines passing by (hope you understand
my poor explanation). I have found that changing the monitor type modify
the 'interference', getting best results with the 's-RGB' setting (I have
not found a PB1400 specific mode)

Is this a known issue?. Is there a way to get rid of it?

Thanks!
