Re: Which Powerbook is most like an SE/30?

2002-09-27 Thread Kastegir

I'd recommend a Powerbook 180. The main reason is that it's got a nice
active matrix display, so it'll be easier on your eyes if you're going
to be looking at it for hours at a time. All the non-color 1xx series
powerbooks do have the same resolution, so that's not going to make a
difference. They all (except the PB100) have built in floppy drives, so
you're set there as well. The 180 has a decent processor with a math
coprocessor (like the se/30, but a bit faster). It'll also hold up to
14mb ram, the 140 and 10 only hold 8mb. The se/30 will take 128, but who
puts that much in them? Mine only has 64.

Anyway, I have a 180 that I got a few months back. It's a great vintage
machine and I heartily recommend it.

Hope that helps.

You can compare specs at www.everymac.com, they've got all the specs listed
there. From memory, a 170 or 180 will probably fit the bill. Most of the
later series 'Books have a 68030, AFAIK only the 100 came with a 68000. Any
1xx series PowerBook is readily available for less than $50. Heck, you can
get a working PowerBook 5300 for less than $100 (www.wegener-media.com).

Screen size for most 1xx series is 640x400 - larger than an SE/30's. Most
stock batteries will not hold a charge for more than a few minutes -
machines of this vintage are 8-10 years old, so they really shouldn't :-).
New batteries are available, but expensive - $70-150. External, regulated
power supplies should work fine, I've used everything from a car battery to
NiMH AA cells with mixed results time-wise.

Hi
We have several models of the older Power Book. If you can figure out which
model you want we probably have it. Let me know.

I use my PB145 with my SE/30, and they get along just fine. The PB145, like
many Powerbooks, has an oddball screen size, but my calendar app opens
up looking the same on both machines. I hardly ever have to resize/reformat.

The reason I suggest this particular one is that it's probably the cheapest of
the old Classic Powerbook line, and perhaps easier to find. I'd love to have
another myself, but I'm finding ANY old Powerbook rare here in Victoria.
My guess is people just hang on to them, like Suzuki Samurais.

I have a GV Modem, a pilfered 250 MB IBM HD, and am maxed out a 8MB RAM.
Great machine for the purpose you described. If you're stuck for software when
the time comes, contact me through this list and I'll be happy to help you out.

Which Powerbook is most like an SE/30?

2002-09-27 Thread jwhite

The following is a (cross)post that I recently put on the compact mac
list. It involves both lists, and I don't really know which list it would
be more relevant to, though I'm thinking it's this one?

A buddy of mine seems to have conned me into taking over his post with a
volunteer organization named "Christmas in September". This organization
fixes up houses for people who can't afford to, and can't do it
themselves (mostly elderly people, and the disabled).

His job was to evaluate houses for the types of electrical problems that
they have. He also had to determine what materials were needed, obtain
said materials, and find other electricians to help put it all together.
Usually the organization does 10 to 15 houses a year, which is one
Saturday in September. It's actually supposed to be an eight hour day,
but being one of the other electricians for the past 6 years, I know it's
never been less than 10 hours and was once more than 14.

I would like to get a Powerbook to help me with this project. I'd like to
get one as close to an SE/30 as possible since that's what I'll be using
at home for this. With my wife's busy school schedule, I can't rely on
using our G4, as alot of her schoolwork can't be done on an SE/30.

I know some of the things I need to find out such as processor, speed,
RAM, Hard Drive space, etc, can be found on Apple's website. The things
they won't have on their site are the little things that are impoertant
too. Things like how long does a battery last, are batteries still
available, can they be rebuilt if they aren't (replacing NiCad cells in
used cases), can a cigar lighter adapter be found for it, so battery
power isn't an issue, as it won't be leaving my truck anyhow. Also, can
it support SCSI disk mode, or localtalk, or both. I'd like one that has
the same screen resolution as a compact (512x384 ?) if possible, so
spreadsheets, etc., come up as smoothly as possible. A 1.4 floppy would
be nice as well. Another thing I need to know is how accessible and the
going cost of a machine is. (that's not to be taken as an offer to buy;
I've got about 9 months to ponder this)

Constructive responses would be appreciated,

J White

Note from Mom

2002-09-27 Thread Dan Knight

As noted in the FAQ, you can only post from, change mode using, and
unsubscribe with the exact email address you used to subscribe. We also
send out an automated email stating this when you subscribe.

If you are having subscription problems -- and as often as not the
current mail server seems to botch things -- do the following:

1. Address your email to [EMAIL PROTECTED], not to any other address.
Do not post your request to the list.

2. Be sure to mention the name of the list(s) you're on. With the current
list management program, I have no way of telling without checking all
30-some lists -- and I don't have the time to do that.

3. Let me know exactly what address you are subscribed with. That's the
address the postings or digest are being sent to.

4. Tell me exactly what needs to be done: switch me to digest mode,
delete my old address and change my subscription to a new one, take me
off your #%$#@% list, etc.

5. If I have to email you with questions, be sure to send all of the
above information with your reply. I get hundreds of emails daily and
dozens just to the listmom address. I will not remember the details --
make it easy so I don't have to ask for the details and wait for yet
another email exchange.

Things are moving very slowly on creating our own email program. I'm
haven't been working at Low End Mac full-time in a year, and I've
increased my hours at the camera shop to help offset the continuing drop
in income from lowendmac.com. I've also got a second half-time job
starting sometime in October, so we need to handle things efficiently.

Also a reminder that we are offering lemlists.com email addresses to list
subscribers for just $5 per year. Details at

April 1st is known as "April Fools Day". It's the day to play practical

The RFC people are known for their humo(u)rous RFCs for the day though.

There is no forward delete on the 150 just back delete.
The newer Powerbooks have a function key which when used makes the back
delete into a forward.

I've never seen a 150's keyboard, but if it's anything like the 520c and
Duo keyboards I am familiar with, the answer is you don't. Most laptop
keyboards drop a few keys deemed unnecessary, and the delete key is
often one.

ICBWT, especially as I've never seen a 150's.
