MkLinux success

2002-09-30 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Ok, I actually did this a while ago, but I just now got around to
putting it on my website, so ...

I got MkLinux Pre-R2 installed on my 5300ce. It works. That's about
all i can say. With no PC card, expansion bay, audio, or floppy
support, there's not much you can do with it besides tool around on
the CLI. And somewhere along the way I screwed up my X settings, so
until i get that figured out, I can't even get to the CLI (X server
now starts at login automatically but gets caught in a loop and won't
display. Screen flashes grey, then back to the CLI login, then grey,
then login, then grey... I let it sit like this for about 5 minutes
before finally giving it the old three-fingered-salute.

Anyway, I did it.

If you want to take a look at the install directions to see if it's
worth it to you (frankly, i doubt it would be worth it to anyone but
a 2400/3400/Kanga/G3 owner as earlier models have about zero support),
go take a peek at my website.

As always, everything between the <> brackets. For me this was more
of a "to-see-if-I-can" project than anything else. But hey, if are
the masochistic type, this might be for you! :-)

Peace,
Drew

PB 3400 case flaw.

2002-09-30 Thread A L

Hi all,

My PowerBook 3400c has a small flaw on the bottom of the case. On the label
on the bottom which says 'PowerBook 3400' along with the FCC info, is a
little bump on the bottom left just under the word "Apparaten."
It looks like something from inside the PowerBook has been pushed outwards
against the bottom of the case, either deforming the plastic onto this bump,
or puncturing it entirely. I won't know which until I figure out a way to
remove that ID label without damaging it. (hint... hint...)

My point, I guess is that I wanted to know if anyone else had run into this
problem, and if anyone knows what causes it. Right now, this thing's
unbelievably minor, but I wouldn't want to see it worsen to the point where
something punches out through the bottom of the case.

I've never opened the 'Book up myself, but it came with 144Mb when I bough
it second-hand, so it's a fair bet someone else has.

Anyway, once this is stabalised, I imagine it could be easily fixed by
removing the label, sanding down the bump and/or patching the hole, then
replacing the label.

Cheers.

It seems regular NiMH batteries also do not have memory effect; anyone know
why the Apple powerbook NiMH setups DO seem to have this?

(NiMH Really Does Not have memory effect under normal circumstances; google
search about this if you doubt...the info is repeated many places,
sometimes with math/chemistry, and seems valid to me) but it does
certainly seem powerbook NiMH does. Or the charging logic sure does seem
to... I'd be happy to blame the power manager for yet another thing :)

Re: Battery - NiMH vs. Li-ION

2002-09-30 Thread Thomas Seid

Sorry to say, but based on my previous experience, the fact that your
battery is not charging means there is probably a logic board issue...unless
of course it is a completely dead battery, but still, you have the date and
time issue...
Lion batteries last longer and do not suffer from memory effect.

4 & 5, the center pins are the modem. Although it is an RJ-45
connector an RJ-11 cable will plug in to it (it was designed that
way) and the center pins on a phone cable are line 1.

About two years ago I found a replacement Ethernet / modem for a PB
G3 which is the same for the 3400. They are out there.

This is probably the rant of someone running RAM Doubler (or even a hacked

Battery - NiMH vs. Li-ION

2002-09-30 Thread gponz

Hi everybody,

I have 2 questions:

1. I changed the PRAM battery in my 3400c and nothing
changed, the date is always wrong when I start up my PB
after only a day or two. The main battery doesn't charge so
I cannot startup the PB without the AC connected. I reset
the PRAM (with the switch in the back), I let it plugged in
for a whole day (24 hours) and nothing changes. Does anybody
know why is this happening? Maybe the battery I got isn't
good? Maybe it's something else? My main battery just
stopped charging all of a sudden, it worked perfectly one
day and the next... nothing. Is this normal? Is my main
battery dead also?

2. I want to get a new main battery, but I'm not sure which
to get. The original is a Li-ION, I know these last longer
than the NiMH, but they go from $70-150. I've seen some NiMH
for around $10. What are the differences between the two? Is
the NiMH safe to use on a 3400c? Which would you recommend?
Any idea on where I could get it cheaper?

Thanks to all.

Sleepless in Hamburg (520)

2002-09-30 Thread Thomas von Fintel

I have a PB 520 that behaves oddly since a few days ago. It doesn't
stay asleep when put to rest, which really is a nuisance, as any
parent will agree. Sometimes it awakens immediately, sometimes it
takes a few minutes or even hours, but eventually it will wake up for
no apparent reason. Secondly it has grown the habit of inserting
extra spaces when I am typing. Is it just trying to get my attention
or what did I do wrong with it?

Seriously, I already resetted the power manager (once). Is it
worthwile to reset the power manager several times or will that make
no difference?

Obviously the keyboard needs some cleaning. I have the service source
and already had the keyboard out once to install extra RAM. Any tips
on how I should go about cleaning the keyboard or what cleaner to use?

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Is my PB 5300 Power manager bad?

2002-09-30 Thread David R.

James, it would be my guess that the Power Manager simply came loose from
its plugin. Having taken my 5300cs apart a few times now, clearly the PM
can be a viable culprit. Not a very stable assembly. Definitely check this
before buying a replacement PM.

If you haven't opened it up before, as others will mention, there are a few
specific precautions needed. Let us know if you need that further info.

Is my PB 5300 Power manager bad?

2002-09-30 Thread James Williams

I recently took my trusty old powerbook 5300 on a two week vacation trip.
All was well until the last couple of days when I discovered my batteries
would no longer run the computer.

I've reset the power manager, and it shows that it is charging the battery.
But when you power the machine up on battery power, it runs a very short
time and then says the battery is dead.

Although both of the batteries are old, they had been holding a fair charge,
and I just find it a little hard to believe that they would both die at the
same time.

Anyone have a sure fire way (other than a new battery) to determine if the
battery or the power manager is at fault?

Thanks!
Jim W.

Or, it used to be the case that the FWB CD Toolkit people would add
accomodation for your drive, and give you a copy ofthe Cd-Toolkit, if
you sent in a drive that wasn't already supported.

I have a SCSI Ricoh CD-RW that I've been meaning to send in to them.
It works already via Toast for burning, just need a was to read CDs
now.

I've never had the Sunrise extension work for anything old or new,
but have yet to try it for this particular drive.
