PowerBook 5300's catching fire was a wide=spread problem with production machines, and a serious issue, necessitating the Apple REA program, under which some folks to this day are still sending their units in for retro-fitting. Re: Video converter for a PB 1400c
You need a scan converter: DB-15 - RCA or something, right? You want to present on a TV. You will still need the PB1400 video out card for one of these to work, since it plugs into the Mac's monitor port and pretends a TV is a valid monitor. Look for something like the Focus Enhancements L*TV: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2059796869 Or if you are looking for that 100% Apple setup, try the Apple Presentation System: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2058203935 Scan converters are a dime-a-dozen on eBay. If you use the right search string, you'll probably come up w/ 10 - 15 of the things. AV PowerMacs (was Re: Video converter for a PB 1400c)
In lieu of not finding one, I'll be looking for a reasonably priced older AV PowerMac with AV 'out' and 'in' RCA jacks. Ken, FYI about older AV macs: NuBus AV class macs can't simulscan. That is, when outputting video, it's either output through the AV-out _OR_ through the regular monitor. One or the other, but not both at the same time. Of course, if you use a dual-monitor setup using the on-board video, that might not be a problem for you... The Power Mac 8500 is the same way. I don't know about the 7500/7600, but I'd guess they behave the same as the 8500 (their more expensive sibling). (Actually, I seem to recall that the 75/600 series don't have video-out at all, but I could be wrong). Pretty sure the Performa (5xxx/6xxx) line doesn't have video-out either. OTOH, the 8600 and Power Mac G3/AV can simulscan. Just in case you were still thinking about getting an AV Mac... I've got two - a 6100AV and a G3 MT/AV. I LOVE the video functionality of both, and the G3's RCA audio-out is pretty useful in a mid-range Hi-Fi system for digital audio playback. pb 1400c showing 100MHz
I've recently purchased a 1400c, and am trying to adapt it to my humble needs. I had assumed it was a 117mhz, but the Apple System Profiler is reporting a 603ev @ 100MHz. Does is still qualify as a 117? Is this going to give me any trouble as I look to upgrade it(accelerator card, RAM, or otherwise)? -tglaab -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... ok, now don't get mad at me. here's another nonrelated (well, sort of) question for everyone (especially applescript or program savvy) out there. I know it is common sense that you need system 7 and 4MB of ram in order to browse the web. what i want to know is if anyone has ever seen a remote control program for macs that will allow you to control a server's desktop and, obviously, run remote programs (ie netscape) on that server, only using your mac as a dumb terminal to display a (probably slow-refresh) screenschot of the server's screen? something like vnc? Or if there is a way to make an applescript on the host server to listen for any remote commands (ie something like go to www.lowendmac.com or whatever that would be in applescript [i'm no programmer]) and do them in netscape, then save the result as a teachtext file which could be accessed remotely via your dumb sys6 terminal. anyone know if this is feasible idea? oh, by the way, i think it should be able to do all this with the lightning-fast speed of localtalk, all of around 200kbps (wow!) please reply off list as this is not really pb-related. thanks a lot you guys alan -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I'm not familiar with vnc but I do know of a program called Timbuktu http://www.timbuktupro.com distributed by Netopia. You'd have to look at older versions to run on older Macs but it does fill the bill as you requested. It's easy to set up and runs well even on older Macs. I control my server with my PowerBook G3 Series (Lombard) but I used to use a PowerBook 1400c (not for surfing though). -- Esver Camacho mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Gold Coast Macintosh Users Group http://www.gcmac.org -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
