Umm.. sure, and while you're at it, let me give you a copy of MacOS X,

As much as I dislike Microsoft, stealing their stuff isn't right. I'm not

Re: Express Modem DAA trouble

2002-10-12 Thread Dan Sirks
It might have something to do with your settings of MacTCP or TCP/IP or
with your settings of either Remote Acess or PPP. If not those try the
Express Modem control panel. If you don't have an Express Modem control
panel, that could be the problem. I am not familiar with a "DAA". I
have set my 180 built-in modem to connect via PPP via phone to the internet.

Sounds like you want to use the connection from out in the parking lot. :)

> Do I need a wireless network card? Can the PB520 even accept one,
> or be modified to do so?

You'd need a wireless network card, presumably one of the Lucent/Orinoco
WaveLAN PCMCIA cards. Now the hard parts: first of all, to use the WaveLAN
card in a 520, you'd need the PCMCIA adapter which would go into the left
battery bay. Unfortunately, these are very hard to come by and very
expensive (to the point where you could probably find a cheap 190 or 5300
for less). There is also the issue of drivers; since the 520 is a 68k
system, you need to find a set of drivers old enough to support the 68k, but
new enough to support recent firmware revisions. Tricky, but then can be
found.

Express Modem DAA trouble

2002-10-12 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Has anybody had trouble with the Apple Express Modem DAA? The modem
in my PB 180c works fine, but I do not get a connection, the modem
tells me that it does not get a carrier signal. The modem cable is
fine, too, so I suspect it has something to do with the DAA.
If anybody would share his/her experiences with me, I would be most grateful.

  total procedure:

1)Remove three screws from the centerline of the mac underneath.

2)Ease the keyboard up and away. Lean it against the screen.

3)Carefully pull/tilt the front palmrest and trackpad up and
toward you
a bit to disengage the catches in the front thencarefully
pull it up and
lean it against the keyboard. Or you can do what I did:
struggle with it
a bit, have it pop loose suddenly and come comletely loose.

If this happens, verify that you didn't tear the trackpad
cable...:-(

4)Undo the three silver screws holding the heatsink/harddrive
casing
down. They are along the front of the PB.

  5) Carefully lift the HDD cage assembly and flip it over to
the left.
You may want to carefully pull the HDD cable loose, just to
get some
working room. It onbly goes one way, but be careful to handle
the
connector only by the plastic edge, NOT the cable.

  6) Lift the power regulator board(?) up and to the right.
This has a
white plastic cover on it, and it connects via a press in
connector
towards the screen side under neath what you see. It is also
attached to
the PRAM battery on the right hand side.

7)Now lift the metal heatsink up and away.

8)At last, you can see the video card. There is a screw
through the back
of the PB (in the rear connector panel) and a screw on the
lower right
hand side of the video card. It is, as Malcom said, obvious
at this
point. That lower screw is screwed into a white nylon spacer
under neath
the video card, so the screw will not come entirely loose.
With both
wcrews out, carefully raise the near end to disconnect from
the MB and
slide the video card straight toward you until it clears the
rather
closely attached video cable across the top of it.

  9) Carefully slide the Focus card into the place, again being
careful of
the video cable and push id on to connect.

--
DOH! 9.5) Re-insert the screws holding the video card into
place, making
sure to use the white nylon spacer.
running the screw partway through the spacer will hold it in
place for
  this operation.
--

  10) Replace the heat sink.
  11) Replace the Power regulator
  12) Replace the HDD cage. Remember to plug it back in!
  13) Replace the trackpad/palm rest assembly. It is a bit
finicky getting
it back together. Use more patience than force. Remember to
plug the
  cable back in!
  14) Put the keyboard back on, and reattach the screws in the
bottom of
  the back.

All done. Just press the power key and...panic, because
nothing happens!

Remember to press the little rest button on the back and it
starts up.

  Breathe huge sigh of relief.

Yes, long ago: it's clear up to 3000 bytes from the recommended 1000 and

PowerBook G3 Series (Wallstreet?) Woes

2002-10-12 Thread KADaggett
This message written: Saturday, 12 October 2002 13:34:34 PDT

Just "acquired" this machine from my daugter who used it (rather sorely,
it seems) for the last 4 years. Lugged it everywhere and used it
constantly. A few weeks ago she had it plugged in to recharge and went
off for several hours. Upon returning she said it was "hot enough to fry
eggs" and it wouldn't start.

She took it to the campus Apple Service folks who ran some test to the
tune of $90 and said it looked like "something serious" that could cost
big bucks. She opted for a new G4 PowerBook and handed the G3 to me to
"play with."

I hauled it home and left it on the charger for a couple of hours and hit
the power button. Nothing. Reset the Power Manager a few times and
finally got it to boot. Ran it for a few hours and put it to sleep.
Wouldn't restart. Reset the Power Manager a few more times and got it to
boot again.

Shut it down for the night and it restarted OK this morning. Let it go to
sleep on its own and only got a gray screen on an attempt to wake via
shift key.

Three fingered salute gave me a start up chime, then nothing.

Reset the Power Manager MANY more times. Nothing but a faint "click" and
a very short flash of the backlight each time.

Trouble shooting chart in the service manual says to start replacing
parts to fix. First on the "list" is the "power supply card" (part
number: 66102039).

My question: Does anyone have any "first-hand" experience with a similar
problem? If so, Is this the "most likely" fix?

Thanks in advance!

Ken

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

PB520 and 802.11b???

2002-10-12 Thread Arlis R Tyner
Hello, everybody.

I am a longtime vintage Mac aficionado, but I'm new to this group.

I was recently given a Powerbook 520, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me the
feasibility of using this machine for wireless internet. I've been seeing a lot of
articles recently about making an 802.11b antenna from a Pringles can and 6 or 7
dollars worth of materials.

I live a rather transient lifestyle, and currently my only internet connection is at
the local library where I am limited to an hour a day and downloads are prohibited.
This Powerbook is my only computer, and it would be great if I could make it work with
one of these cheap Pringles can antennas.

Do I need a wireless network card? Can the PB520 even accept one, or be modified to do
so?

Sorry for sounding like such a newbie, but the last time I had regular access to my
own computer this Powerbook was the latest thing in laptop computing, and I was still
making do with a 3 year old Performa.

Thanks,

Arlis Tyner

180 driving Me Crazy!

2002-10-12 Thread COCCORP
(not a very far distance to traverse though)

My PB 180 lately has been doing the following:

Whenever I start it up after a day or so off (after being plugged in OR with
a good charged battery only) it starts up by giving me the Chimes Of Death!

Then when I restart it, it will startup 1/2-way then give me System Error,
either a "Bus" error or a "no floating point co-processor error."

Then after several attempts with starting it up with either Extentions off,
or rebuilding the Desktop, or w/ a PRAM zap (sometimes doing these things
several times) it will act okay...

...until the NEXT TIME I leave it off for more than a day!

1. Just got a new PRAM battery put in it!

2. The rechargable battery holds a confirmed charge! It can run the computer
on its own for 30 minutes or so...

3. Some other problems were going on a week ago (system problems/crashing and
such) WITH THESE SAME startup problems, so I erased the HD and started
over... but this startup stuff is still going on!

What gives?

Craig W.

Re: How to install Focus Enet/Video card in 5300

2002-10-12 Thread Donna Hood Pointer

I went to www.lowendmac.com to search the archives for the Powerbook list.
I don't see any links there for step-by-step on installing the card..

I am sending this again, because I think it just got returned under
mysterious circumstances.

The 1xx are pretty easy to work on. Well built in my opinion. You might
want to get the 'take-apart' at:

Xircom Ethernet card

2002-10-12 Thread Stephen Coles
I have a PB1400c 133, running MacOS 8.6. I bought a Xircom 10/100 PCMCIA
Card (RE-100) on eBay, assuming that Xircom - being such a large PCMCIA
Card brand -
would support MacOS.
Of course they don't and as a result, I am unable to use the card.

Is there an unofficial driver I have been unable to find, or has anyone
lucked out with another manufacturer's driver and a Xircom card?
