About 1/3 of the way down there's a link for older GV software, if that's

Keeping your screen clean

2002-11-01 Thread Mike Amato

I just came back from Pearl Arts and Craft store where I bought a piece of
felt 8 1/2"X11" for all of 22 cents. Fits perfectly in my Lombard over the
keyboard without cutting to fit. The pb closes easily, this keeps the keys
from marking the screen either from contact or the oil from fingers. Comes
in many colors so you can be as daing as you like.

Re: Keeping your screen clean

2002-11-01 Thread Sionnach Aisling
H...

I know the Toshiba repair facility I used to work for
uses a 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and water for
cleaning both screens and case plastics. (That was
recommended by Toshiba) Personally, I don't think it
works great - but it does work. I usually will
recommend screen cleaning products like were mentioned
here... They generally work pretty well and were
designed for the job.

As for a keyboard overlay... Ideally, I would look
for a thin piece of anti-static foam. (Sorry, don't
have a source for one. I work in the industry, so I
can usually find a piece easily :-) ) The felt will
definately keep keyboard oil and dirt from
transferring to your screen, but I would be concerned
about the static properties of the felt...

Cheers,
Sionnach

Expansion options for a 5300?

2002-11-01 Thread Michael R. Hicks
List,

Is there any way to expand memory on a 5300 using the Type
II card slots?

For example, can one make a RAM Disk, using memory from say,
a Type II memory card and place the operating system onto that?
If so, is system performance improved?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Many people have reported using virtual memory set to a flash card in
the pcmcia slot as working reasonably well.

The trick is to format the card as a mac disk, which usually means you
turn of PC Exchange in Extensions manager, inserting the card, and then
formatting the card when asked to.

I expect a sufficiently large card could easily hold the system and
several apps...even 128mb cards are pretty cheap these days. I don't
know if you can boot from one, though.

CF is compact flash indeed; you buy a $15 CF to PCMCIA adapter, and you
have a portable stoarage that can move between powerbooks etc. CF or
smartmedia by themselves won't fit in a PCMCIA slot, you need the adapter.
Really should be $15 or less.

If you format it as a mac volume you can boot from it; if you format it in
your camera it's a great way to offload digital pictures quickly from your
camera- just put the CF or smartmedia (you can get a smartmedia-PCMCIA
adapter as well) in the PC Card adapter and load into your powerbook, copy
the images to the hard drive (using PcExchange, just like on a PC formatted
floppy). (caveat: I've not made a Smartmedia boot disk, just transfer
images from my camera that way, but the smartmedia should boot, too).

Use as VM is fun, works, some folks worry about decreasing the life of the
card due to VM writes but I've not yet seen anyone post that they have had
a card go bad even so.

If it works in the 1400 and 5300 as I have, it can only work better in a
fancy-dancy 3400 ;)

I didn't have to disable PC Exchange, as some have said; I just picked "mac
volume" when formatting the card. It was either OS 8.6 or 9.1 when I set
this up, I forget (versions of PC Exchange might differ, but as long as I
can recall Format has let you choose PC or Mac volumes whatever you are
working with).

It's kind of handy to have as a speed disk/emergency boot disk for working
on powerbooks- no mucking around with CD drives, no hauling my external
drive around when working on other people's laptops, etc.

2002-11-01 Thread Andrew Kershaw
> Did I send you the 1/2 meg VRAM simm or was that another guy ?

Tee hee... That was me. ;-)

I haven't mentioned it yet because ... I haven't gotten it to work yet.

Thanks so much for the VRAM though!

I soldered it in just fine and my initial testing w/ a circuit tester
showed everything green (note that the leads on the tester are quite
blunt). I booted the modded 5300 w/ the 800x600 ce display and got
the same behaviour I was getting with only 512K of VRAM.

So, either the VRAM isn't installed correctly, I'm missing something
else (like adding a cap somewhere), or the 5300cs just can't use the
5300ce display. I'm leaning toward the first possibility. And it's
only a matter of time until I take the machine back apart and
re-solder all the pads to make sure that it's making all the right
connections.

>From what I can tell, though, the 5300cs motherboard ought to handle
the ce display w/ the VRAM upgrade. It's probably just that a couple
of the legs on the 512K vram aren't touching their traces on the
mobo... Like I said, the circuit tester's probes are very blunt and
it's entirely possible that I wasn't actually seeing a good circuit -
the probe itself actually bridging the gap between the RAM chip's leg
and its mobo solder pad.

Right now i'm putting together a walkthrough of the 5300 innards on my
website. When I'm done, there'll be a pick of the VRAM I soldered
onto the board, so you can feel free to take a look. It's not up yet,
though...

Peace,
Drew

Re: Expansion options for a 5300?

2002-11-01 Thread Robert Eye
Michael,

You can use a Compact Flash card (or any card that has a type II PCMCIA reader, I'd
guess) as a quasi-hard drive (that's how it shows up on the desktop) for virtual
memory or for cache memory in web browsers. It does NOT increase the amout of RAM you
can use, so use as a RAM disk is out.

I tried using a 128 MB SanDisk Compact Flash card as an emergency boot "drive" (a lot
smaller than carrying around a CD-ROM drive), but I could never get my 5300cs to boot
from it successfully (I recall "bus error" to be the dominant fault). I did share
some correspondence where it was implied that there might be a difference between
manufacturers and achieving success with my intended use, but I never bought another
brand to try it out. I also received correspondence from 1400 owners which said this
application (boot disk) worked for them.

I also tried it for VM but I did not notice any speed difference in the short time I
used it. I may go back and try it again.

I'm looking forward to some success stories with a 5300 machine and a CF card as a
boot disk on this thread. :-)

>card as a boot disk on this thread. :-)

Just to make sure that nothing has changed:

I just hauled out my 5300ce (OS 8.1) (wow I need to get around to getting
an active display for my 1400 sometime, twice now they were super cheap on
ebay when I was away on vacation, grumble) and booted it just fine with my
CF card rescue disk. (sequence of events: boot the ce (OS8.1), insert the
CF (8.1 is on the CF), select the CF as boot volume in the "startup disk
control panel). Reboot, boots from card first try.

In my 5300cs (OS 8.6), I did get a "bus error" a couple times before it
would fire up.
I had put the CF in while the laptop was powered off, at bootup with the CF
already in place the 5300cs got confused for the first couple boot
attempts, I hit the reset button in the back, it then booted fine (from the
HD) with the CF still inserted, then I could use "startup disk" to select
the CF and it booted just fine from the CF. PRAM confusion, likely. But
it gets sorted out in the end. If I boot the 5300cs, put in the CF, select
the CF as boot volume, it boots fine on the first try.

The CF card is a 64 meg Sandisk, the PC Card adapter is a Microtech CF
adapter.

I know that the ATA implementation is a little different between brands,
and other tidbits like in CF the ATA interface chip is in the card where
smartmedia it's in the adapter, or _vice versa_, (I might have mangled that
detail pretty well, I wasn't paying attention on the mailing list that day
I guess, and it doesn't really matter here).

But it can work...but just to clarify it shows up as a removeable drive no
matter what, not as RAM. It's either a PC drive or a Mac drive on the
desktop. If you boot from it, the PB is very quiet :)

Brian
