Re: vpc on powerbook 1400

2003-01-07 Thread John Kamimura
Should also mention that the 1400 is running 9.0.4 with a lot of the extensions and
other misc. stuff stripped out of the System folder.
You may be able to sell off your RAM and get the full 64 MB instead.

Arrgh.  Well there's perhaps one reason to get the full 64 instead of 60;
not sure that's cost effective for me though. But my Win95 install works
fine and does my taxes with turboTAX, which is what I wanted (although
printing was a pain for a documented issue, IIRC- maybe that would work
better (printing to Mac postscript printer from VPC ) in VPC 4). It might
be that if I REALLY remove absolutely every extension I might get to enough
physical RAM available to make VPC 4 happy, bur I disabled just about
everything when I was testing and it still didn't run.

Thanks for the info;

Generally speaking, you can fairly easily translate from a "smarter"
interface to a "dumber" interface, but going the other way around is fairly
difficult. Serial, parallel, and ethernet are all fairly dumb, while SCSI,
USB, and PCMCIA are fairly smart. This is why you have USB-Serial,
USB-Ethernet, and the like, but you won't find Ethernet-SCSI, Ethernet-USB,
etc without a lot of extra logic in there.

Going a bit deeper, USB is capable of carrying just about anything with the
right drivers, which is why it works for all the various adapters. PCMCIA
too, is fairly universal. Ethernet, on the other hand, uses Ethernet frames
and not much else. You have to have a device that could, for example,
convert whatever you have plugged into the USB port into Ethernet frames,
which is then translated back into something usable. Possible, but takes a
lot more logic.

Anyway, that's about it :)

You need VPC 4 for using Win98, I believe.

I use VPC 3.x with Win95/OSR2 on my 1400/G3 400/ 60 RAM.

I would look for a cheap VPC 3.x copy, it's alot nicer than 2.x IMO, and you're pretty
much stuck with Win95 on the 1400 unless somehow someone with 64 RAM is able to get
just over the edge, that I can't with my 60. With 48, there's just no way.

If someone has different experiences, I'd love to read about them.

I have a PB 1400 with G3/233 and the full 64 MB RAM. I just finished doing a VPC 3/Win
98 from the VPC 3 CD-ROM and it runs just fine in the default 48 MB RAM configuration.
I also did a stripped down installation of Office 97 to see how it would run. Word is
slow - you can sometimes type faster than the letters show up on the screen - but
useable.

OT - OS 9.x file size question...

2003-01-07 Thread Mike Hebel
I have an iBook Graphite , as well as my old 540c, and I was wondering
if anyone knew a solution to the 2gig file size limit for OS 9?

I would like to do some video editing but for something of any length I
can easily hit the 2gig barrier thus I am looking for a solution.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

TIA!

powerbook 3400 heat

2003-01-07 Thread K
Hello,
I was wondering:
a) if it was normal for the powerbook 3400 to get quite hot at the left
palm rest area, but not on the right side of the trackpad?
b) has anyone tried to VST expansion bay hard disk (labelled for use with
the 190 and 5300) with the 3400 and got it to work? Mine isn't.
First I removed the system 7.5.3 on it, used Drive Setup from system 9.1 to
initialise the VST disk and put new drivers on it. Then when I tried to
copy items across to it, (I especially need the 9.1 system copied to this
VST disk) the copy window freezes halfway through a copying task and I have
to restart the computer.
Any advice appreciated.

I've got an ethernet connection between a PB5300 (no USB) and a desktop 7600
connected to a scanner via a USB card, and experimentally tried to get a
copy of Photoshop on the laptop to import directly from the scanner. It
didn't work at all, though if the scanner software were installed on the
laptop perhaps it might. Of course once scans are on the 7600's hd the 5300
can see them with no problem, so as a practical matter it doesn't matter in
the least.

I'll agree with this. We have two 3400Cs here, one with 8.6 and one with
9.1 - my partner is happy enough with 9.1 but I like the way the 8.6
responds better. Both have max RAM, too.

I've a 3400c maxed out in memory(144 Megs), and am extemely stasified with

run slower and 9.1 uses a lot more memory. I reverted to 8.6.

Hi all

What the best OS for the 3400 all I want is a general opinion.

I have just recently picked up a TI G4 so I will be putting my 3400 to
reserve for a while until I find a good use for it but I want to re install
all the apps and give it a really good checking first so I don't (get it out
to use in a couple of weeks and find Glod)

Or I would be willing to swap it out for a 2400 say mail me off list.

Why not Ethernet to USB ?? you can already get Ethernet to parallel /
serial, also an Ethernet to USB would be useful also for people wishing to
use USB printers on a network.
(You can already get USB -> Ethernet, so why not the other way round?).
Admittedly it may be quite pricy as it would probably need to be a mini
network server with shared USB ports, but it should be possible.
