iMovie 3 on PowerBook G4

2003-01-31 Thread Esver Camacho
I'm disappointed that the new iMovie 3.0.1 suddenly made my PowerBook
G4 (800 Mhz) feel old. I normally zip through iMovie 2 but this
latest version turned my PowerBook into a dinosaur. Not only that but
iMovie 3 appears to require rendering of photos through the Ken Burns
effect even for simple placement on the timeline. In iMovie 2 you
just placed the photos without wasting time rendering, making the
laying out and transitioning of photos faster. You also were able to
adjust the time on screen of the photo clip by entering
seconds:frames. This is crucial for timing the appearance of photos
with a music track or a voice-over. The current method of setting the
time, rendering, resetting the time and re-rendering it too
cumbersome. I hope they come out with a faster revision and fix that
photo placement method.

I think I'll stick with iMovie 2 for awhile.

Re: PBG3,Charging Problem

2003-01-31 Thread Andrew Kershaw
John,

It sounds like either the battery or the Wallstreet's charge
card/power supply board is faulty. Welcome to the club. Heh, don't
get me started on Wallstreets and battery problems! :-D

You might get better help from the g-books list, since they actually
have PowerBook G3 Series machines over there... Not to mention that
this subject is technically off-topic for this list...

If you actually get any answers that help (other than the usual
helpful "Try swapping batteries/powerbooks with known good parts"),
please let me know. I've been dealing with this issue on my
Wallstreet for a while now, and I don't know anyone else with whom I
can trade parts.

Peace,
Drew

Re: Wireless with a 190cs

2003-01-31 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Hmm, it sounds like you downloaded the drivers for the Proxim
(Farallon) SkyLINE card, NOT the WaveLAN Silver. The SkyLINE and
WaveLAN are NOT the same card.

I don't know what is going on with Proxim and the Orinoco/WaveLAN
brand, but it looks like Proxim owns the brand name now (as of August
2k2). So I can see how it would be easy to get confused. A quick
search of Proxim's support section didn't turn up anything promising.
(I found the 7.1 and 7.2 version drivers, but these apparently don't
support the 5300 and 1400, and doubtless the 190 as well). I have a
WaveLAN driver CD-ROM (came with my card when I bought it way back
when). It has version 6.x (6.2?) drivers on it, and DOES support the
190 (though not the 5x0 series). If you want, I can email the
drivers to you.

LET ME KNOW _OFF-LIST_ IF YOU WANT THE DRIVERS.

If there is enough demand, and if the license agreement does not
forbid it, I will also post these drivers on my website... It seems
like users of older books are becoming more and more subject to
obsolescence. *Sigh* My 5300ce still has a lot of kick in it...

Peace,
Drew

Hi Aly -- Take a look at

They say they'll rebuild a 1400 battery for $84 plus $5 shipping -- it'll be
better than "new" (probably) because any "new" 1400 battery you might come
on has undoubtedly been sitting on the shelf somewhere for years and more or
less exhausted from boredom if nothing else.

I just rebuilt one using cells from DigiKey.com, part: P018T-ND 4/3A Nickel
Metal Hydride.

The case comes apart easily with some careful prying and pulling then it's
a matter of pulling the connections off the cells with fine-nosed pliers,
and soldering the new cells in place. Pay careful attention to polarity.
Make a diagram of the original configuration if you need to. Since the new
cells have their own protective covering, there is no need to replace the
cardboard tube covers. Just make sure the center connections don't stick
out to far and short against each other. Shorting these cells would be bad
(see Ghostbusters for definition of "bad").

These packs are much easier to rebuild than the 500 series packs.

Good luck!,

Firewire 2.3.3

2003-01-31 Thread Gerald R . Homeyer
Hi again!
Would like to use a firewire harddrive to backup my PM 8500 and PB 3400c
harddrive partitions. I've downloaded Firewire 2.3.3 and extracted the
following extentions using Tome Viewer
Firewire Enabler
Firewire Cardbus Enabler
Firewire Support
I put them in the extention folder on both computers. I've been looking
at Belkin and Orange micro PCI and PCMCIA cards. Would appreciate any
advice, suggestions etc to set up and use this method. Will these three
extentions in the extentions folder allow me to use these cards and
firewire harddrive? Appreciate the benefit of your experience. Thanks,
Gerald

oops, should have scrolled to see the other posts :)

the batteries Plus shop in town will do the spot welding for you, I was
thinking of doing all the disassembly and just hauling the bits in :)

You'd think someone would have a web page with photos/specifications by now
but I've not found one yet.

Re: 1400- battery rebuild

2003-01-31 Thread Brian

Do you know what cell they put in it?

One online rebuilder said on their page that they don't do 1400 batteries
any longer as they had problems with the "chip". I've rebuilt some battery
packs for other things and was thinking of trying to find the specs for the
replacement cells, and having BatteriesPlus order some in for me.

thanks,

Brian
