Re: Battery Recondition question

2003-02-02 Thread Tom Lisa P
Greetings all,
I have a question re: the following recondition question:
I have a Duo 280c, with a spare Type III NiMH Duo battery that I would like
to recondition in the hopes that it will improve it's recharge performance.
I'm using the old Apple Battery Recondition utility, v. 1.1 as find at the
ftp site.
I boot up with extensions off (OS 8) to run the utility
Here's my question:
when one launches the program, what are the characteristic reactions from
the unit?

When I press OK to start the utility, the Duo immediately goes into a
strobe mode (screen flashes on/off, cpu seems to pulse, and speaker
crackles) for a few cycles, and then appears to shut itself off - wait, I
checked, it does shut itself off, because I can reboot by simply pressing
the power key.

Is this normal? I've never owned a PBook nor dealt with such issues before,
and I don't want to cause any collateral damage to the unit.
Many thanks for fielding the question.
Best regards,
Dana

That means the poor little duo isnt able to recondition the battery.
Too much drain, I guess. You can keep trying to recondition. I
find that with multiple attempts, I can finally get a battery to
recondition. Try charging it up a bit before reconditioning.

resolution loss in OS 9.1

2003-02-02 Thread Gerald R . Homeyer
Decided to do a clean install of OS9.1 on my 3400c and after doing so
successfully, discovered that when trying to select a resolution of 1024
x 768 70 Hz from the resolution ikon on the control strip after holding
the control key that all resolutions over 800 x 600 were missing. I run
my external 17 monitor at the higher resolution very successfully on OS
8.6. Is this another Apple glitch? Has anyone else had this problem?
Don't care for the new Sherlock window format at all on 9.1. Went back to
OS 8.6 and all my resolutions were there again. Did manage to snag the
newer Firewire extentions though. Regards, Gerald

You can use a regular mini phone plug, 1/8 or 3.5mm (IIRC). Make
sure the polarity is correct and you need to put an insulating washer
on the plug to provide the proper fit.

Your Duo's reaction is typical for a _very_ discharged battery, and no it
doesn't do that when it is working properly. As MadDog suggested, leave
it in your sleeping Duo charging for awhile (several days isn't too
long), which may recharge it enough to allow using the recondition SW.

I doubt this hurt the Duo though, I've done this very thing to probably
most of my Duos and they've all survived OK.

Dana's question reminded me of an idea I had awhile back. I've got a Lind
SuperCharger II which has resurrected _every_single_ Type3 Duo battery
I've put into it, including a bunch that started with _0_ (!) volts. I've
had a number of offers to buy it, but I'm not really up for selling just
yet as I still have alot of Duos around here. : )

However . . . I was wondering if there's any 'market'(?) for a
reconditioning service amongst y'all? Battery owner would pay $XX only if
successful, and would send their battery along with the $XX, plus return
postage and a return shipping label. I'd test for runtime after
reconditioning in the SuperCharger, and if it worked I'd keep the $XX and
return the battery. If it didn't, I'd return the battery _and_ the $XX.

Any interest? This would be for Type 3 Apple batteries _only_, I've _no_
luck with type 1 or 2! I wrote $XX because I haven't really thought about
this and don't want to make any 'Offers until I ponder on it a little.
I'm open to suggestions though . . .

If you might have an interest in this sort of service reply _OFFLIST_
please,

A Question to the battery savey...

Hello,

We had a discussion not long ago about re-packing battery packs in 1400's.
But what I would like to know, is if one goes to the trouble of having the
battery inside the battery pack replaced, is it not possible to put a
different type of battery in?? Like a Li-Ion for example. Anyone know why
this wouldn't be able to be done?

Li-Ion batteries have built-in electronics for identification and
