is there a pc program that can read the disk copy images?

No, but maybe some day Connectix will develop a
Virtual Mac OS XI for pea sea's. Then you can use DiskCopy.
 Joe

???
What about the existing Mac emulators???
I use basilisk and it reads disk images fine.
Ben.
Nb you are limited to Os8.6 (officially it only supports 8.1, but with the
correct Rom image it can run 8.5/6)

I was wondering where I could find tutorials on connecting a Mac to a PC via

Would I be able to use the internet on the Mac via a Wintel PC (Win2k

1. That is the ADB port, you connect your external keyboard and mouse there, or my
QuickCam, that takes its power from it, as did some old 33.6 Kbps Supra external
modems.

2. It is not too difficult to do it, just be very careful. And search for the manual,
is there somewhere.

Those will not work, as the holes the screws are set into are smaller
than the big part of those tips and the tip isn't long enough to reach
the screws.

I think he is actually asking about the PCM port, the slot, not the ADB
which is on the back...

The slot is for various adaptors, from ethernet to audio. It's the
Powerbook equivalent of a PCI slot in a desktop Mac.

Am I right?

Hi yes you are right about the pcmcia port but the adb port on the 3400
is on the side just before the rear leg and is covered by a little door
so thats where the confusion is.

PB 1400 CDROM question

2003-02-07 Thread Thomas Rothmeier

I have a 12x CDROM Apple Model M3628(TEAC CD211E) from a PB 1400c/166. The
drive suffered damage when the laptop fell off a table. (PB is fine). The
faceplate tray and laser are fine, but the locking mechanism plastics (the
thing that locks the tray in during cd operation) has broken loose and I am
cannot seem to be able to fix it. Is there somewhere to obtain a repair
guide of some sort or is this thing headed for the dumpster?

P.S. Would another TEAC mechanism (such as the CD224e, a 24x drive) work in
place of the original drive also work if I cannot get it fixed? Any help is
greatly appreciated.

normal $99.95 (which is still a decent price) until the end of the month.

well it would work for the t-8, seeing as all the t-8's are not recessed,
besides, the torx bitset would always come in handy :)

Those will not work, as the holes the screws are set into are smaller
than the big part of those tips and the tip isn't long enough to reach
 the screws.

Re: Re.: Powerbook 3400/200

2003-02-07 Thread THE ROCK
That's what I suspected, but wasn't sure. Some kind gentleman sent me the Apple link
to 3400 manuals ( I don't have one).
I don't have enough money to buy the powerbook I want (the 17 inches G4) so I'll
usb/firewire to my 3400. I will also bump up the ram to 144 while I salivate over the
G4!

The slot is for various adaptors, from ethernet to audio. It's the
Powerbook equivalent of a PCI slot in a desktop Mac.

 Am I right?

FS - Many portables that must go

2003-02-07 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(This is the fourth try at posting this over the last week to the PowerBook
list. The first ones still haven't appeared. My apologies if this appears
multiple times.)

Lots of Duos and PowerBooks looking for new homes! Everything must go. If it
isn't sold, it will be trashed. So...

If you see something you want but don't like the price, **MAKE AN OFFER** -
I won't be offended at any offer, and you'll probably get it. Other than I'm
sure that I would like at least a little cash (or in some cases, a promise
that it will be put to good use or even a gift certificate for a dozen
glazed Krispy Kremes or a peach pie from Baker's Square g) it is really
hard to say what is the right price. I just need to have as much of this
gone by next weekend as I can. Whatever is left by then will be disposed of.

I have prices listed but I don't have time to do a lot of research for
accuracy - my prices may be right or not (probably not), hard to say - but I
listed prices anyway since people seem to like seeing them. If the price
says $80 but your budget will only handle $40, make me an offer. You never
know.

Trades are possible, but I'm not looking for a ton of stuff. See my want
list at the bottom...

Figure shipping will be apprx. $15 for a PowerBook, $30 for a complete Duo
kit. All shipping via USPS.

All items are guaranteed to not be DOA. There is no guarantee on any
batteries (main or PRAM) or internal modems. I haven't tested the modems,
and all batteries, given the age, are almost always dead by now anyway.
Still, unless otherwise noted, I will include a battery in case it might
work or in case you want to try to rebuild it.

Here's the list of what I have and again, make an offer if you want
something but don't like the price. I'd rather get something than toss 'em
in the dumpster, which is where they are headed otherwise.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE

1. On one side of my powerbook there is a receptacle for my floppy and i
imagine that's where the cdrom drives resides too. Now, on the opposite
side of the power book is another receptacle with a small opening
(compared to the floppy receptacle on the opposing side), what is this
second receptacle used for? A few ideas are coming to mind but I'd
somebody who knows to clear the air for me.

==0

MY FIRST ANSWER

1. That is the ADB port, you connect your external keyboard and mouse
there, or my QuickCam, that takes its power from it, as did some old
33.6 Kbps Supra external modems.

==0

THE LOGICAL ANSWER FROM centurytel:

The other side should be just big enough for the PCMCIA cards that you can
get for your computer - such as ethernet and modem cards

Of course! Silly me! I read small opening but forgot floppy like.
I stand corrected.
Best regards.

USB peripheral options on OS 8.1

2003-02-07 Thread JMCnetwork
I remember the first iMacs shipped with 8.1, so some USB devices, like
Apple's keyboards and mice definitely work. Anyone know or use other USB
devices, like printers, scanners, etc?

I want to see about downgrading a 1400c from 8.5.1 for speed and adding a USB
PCMCIA card to it to say, use a newer USB printer with it.

Thanks for any tips, links or ideas on this, everyone!

Update: PB 1400 CDROM question

2003-02-07 Thread Thomas Rothmeier

Hi,
I have found the bad part on the PB 1400 12x CDROM drive, Model M3628. The
wierd black plastic hook that operates the eject mechanism was broken in
half during the fall and it won't glue back together. Does anyone have a bad
mechanism or have the part for this? I can provide pics if neccesary. I
don't want to toss the drive because of a broken piece of plastic. Your
help has been and is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

TR

Re: USB peripheral options on OS 8.1

2003-02-07 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Hmm, last I heard, there were no 16-bit PCMCIA USB cards for
Macintosh. They all require CardBus slots. The 1400c does not have
CardBus. Thus, you cannot use USB on a 1400c.

Otherwise, I also seem to recall that the OS 8.1 USB extensions ONLY
work on the iMac. That is, I'm pretty sure that Apple's USB
extensions for PC Cards and PCI cards (as opposed to the on-board USB
on an iMac) require Mac OS 8.5+

Peace,
Drew

Hmm, last I heard, there were no 16-bit PCMCIA USB cards for
Macintosh. They all require CardBus slots. The 1400c does not have

Nope, never seen a 16-bit USB card. Probably not one, that I know of.

Nope, I was able to get USB working on my 6500 with 8.1. You have to Tome
Viewer the 1.2 drivers and pull them out, but it works. The readme for 1.2
says it needs 8.5.1, but it does work in 8.1. For mice and keyboards and
such. Anything else is luck and ymmv.

The main problem is the lack of cardbus on a 1400.

Powerbook 140 Dilemma

2003-02-07 Thread K.L. Shelly
Hi. I posted awhile back (months ago) on problems with my
Powerbook 140. I put that computer away for awhile, thinking it was dead,
only to reboot it tonight, and discovered something strange: Before, it
looked like the screen was dead. Now, the screen's not dead - there's a
greytone box with the mouse cursor fully operable within it (the box takes
up most, if not all, of the screen).
However, the OS (and I can't quite remember /what/, for the life
of me, it is) doesn't want to start up. I just have the mouse, and the
grey box. Is there any way I can fix this? Please let me know, and thanks
in advance. :)

Try booting from a floppy.

Sometimes the internal SCSI hard drive gets hung up and hangs the booting
process.

Since the Mac looks at the floppy first, before ever looking at the hard
drive, you can sometimes get things back to normal that way.

Re: Powerbook 140 Dilemma

2003-02-07 Thread K.L. Shelly
Booting from a floppy... if I don't have the floppy (which I
don't), that'll be difficult. And I doubt my campus helpdesk will have
something that old. Is there anywhere reliable that I could obtain the
floppy? I bought the computer itself for $15 from the Salvation Army where
I worked at the time - and it lasted a good two months, at least, before I
gave up on it. But, being a Salvation Army, uh, salvation, it had no disk,
of course.
