Norton 6 will work well with 8.6
Norton 4 will work with 8.0 -8.6
Norton 2-3 will work with 7.0 -> 7.6.1

is it a Norton original cd ? if it doesnt start correctly - blame
the 9.2 OS and not norton.

5300 Boot floppy

2003-02-08 Thread JeffH
Is it possible to make a boot floppy for the 5300 that will allow some kind
of network access, either localtalk or ethernet? I'm trying to rescue a
file off what appears to be a Pismo HD, and the 5300 is the only other
machine I have that's IDE. I'm hoping that I can start up off of a floppy
and see the HD in order to get the file.

thanks

Not sure if Roxio EZ CD Creator for Windows can read Roxio Toast disc
images unless you install a software like Macdrive 98 or newer that
reads/writes/saves Mac files on a PC.

You need the right enabler, and it'll work. Get a set of disks for
that particular machine, and it will have the right disk tools disk as well.

This has been one weird experience. I started trying to post this listing to
the swap list starting Thursday a week ago. It finally appeared yesterday, 8
days later, on my eighth try to that list. I have no idea what happened to
the first 7 tries as I never got any response from anyone/anything notifying
me of any problems.

In the meantime, when I was starting to think it would never make it, I
decided to try posting it to the PowerBook list. Since list rules allow it
(though personally, until this post, I only post FS items to the swap list)
I figured that maybe, for whatever reason, it might appear on this list and
at least some people would have a shot at it. From then on, I alternated my
attempts to post it between the two lists, again with no luck. I finally
gave up and posted it to both lists at the same time in a last ditch try at
listing the items. Only then did it appear - and of course, it appeared on
both lists at the same time. Go figure. :-(

Norton Util. 6 on PB3400c?

2003-02-08 Thread Bill Hatchell
Can I use and boot from Norton Utilities 6 (believe it has OS9.2 on it)
on a PB3400c machine which has OS8.6 installed? In other words, can
the 3400c emergency boot from this particular version of Norton or can
I force the Norton to boot using perhaps a built-in OS 8.6 rather than
9.2 just in case? What are the alternative disk utilities for older
PowerBooks running something between OS8.1 and 8.6 but not OS9?
Anyone? Thanks.

Upgrading HD in PB 190cs

2003-02-08 Thread Bryan Taylor
Would anybody know a URL or have brief instructions (from experience) on
how to access the 500Mb drive in a 190cs? I have a 2Gb drive from a
Wallstreet I'd like to replace it with. I appreciate that with HFS, I'll
need to break up the 2Gb into several smaller partitions to keep the
block size in reasonable bounds, but is there any other opportunities?

TIA

Re: 1400 G3 upgrade

2003-02-08 Thread David Allen
>From what I've been able to find, it appears that the 3400 has no
practical G3 upgrade path. The (if memory serves) soldered on CPU and the
sharing of the case with the G3/250 PB make it impractical to upgrade the
3400.

The differences between the 3400/G3 seem to be (besides hard/CD drives,
modem, and some no longer needed 3400 parts.) different logic, power
supply, IR boards, fan assembly, bottom case and battery. It would
probably be cheaper to buy a G3 PB than to do the upgrade, but if a G3
with a bad display were found?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, yes,
it's doable. When you install Palm Software on a PC
or Mac, you can create profiles for different devices,
so if you had a couple Palms (like I do for me and my
wife) we each have our own profile and we just need to
select the proper one when we go to synch... It keeps
all our data seperate. If you want to install Palm
software on two machines (say work and home) and synch
your Palm to both... you can do that too. Although,
you'll need to be pretty persistent about synching at
both locations pretty regularly to make sure you
always have what you need on both ends.

Cheers,
Sionnach

Yeah, hrm... ;-)

I suppose that depends on the machine. (Are we still talking about the 5x0?)

On my Wallstreet and on my 5300, the screws that retain the case
stiffener are VERY deeply recessed. The screws that hold in the
keyboard on the 5300 are also fairly deeply recessed. And some of
the screws on the case bottom of my Wallstreet are deeply recessed.

A friend of mine had a set of torx bits for his screw driver, but
they couldn't get at some of the screws in my case. In the end, I
ended up buying a handful of Torx drivers from Sears with medium to
REALLY long shafts (ever tried getting inside an old all-in-one

Best,

Try looking at http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html
There might be a link somewhere in there to download a startup floppy disk.
I haven't had much experience in the field of floppy disks I'm afraid... :-)

Good luck with it,

John.

here in the u.k. i got both the torx sizes i needed for getting inside my
pb160 from halfords ( a motoring & spare parts chain ) , one's in a
screwdriver form -the other is for use with a socket set (!) but i treat
it like a stubby screwdriver as i don't need that much effort to undo them .
