Re: PB 1400 + USB?

2003-03-18 Thread John Cate
> Is there a PC card that will allow me to have a USB port on a PB 1400?

No, it's not possible to support USB on a 1400. USB is a 32-bit only
protocol, which means to support USB on a PC Card, the card must be
CardBus-capable. Unfortunately, the hacks to support CardBus on the 2400,
3400 and 3500 don't work with the 1400.

So why is that not true then? When LLFing an ATA (or any other) drive, it
can take anywhere from 20min to an hour or more. If it is doing nothing at
all, then why does it take so long? It seems stupid if it is writing zero's,
because it does that in the next step, when it says "Writing Zero's"

I just don't understand why, if it is bad/pointless/impossible to LLF an ATA
drive, it is possible to select it, and (aside from this list) not generally
known to damage the drive. If apple knows all this, why is drive setup
(capable of LLF) still included with new Macs, even though they all use ATA
drives? If a customer puts a SCSI disk in a new Mac, then it is via a 3rd
party driver, which presumably can format it's own disk anyway.

Like you, Drew, I don't particularly want to drag this argument out any
further, but it all sounds very old-wives-tale-ish to me... :-)

IDE is IDE is IDE, whether it's on a Mac, a PC, or an Atari 8-bit. What
differs is the filesystem format on the disk.

if you've selected a different partitioning scheme or changed from
HFS to HFS+ (or HFS+ to HFS), it will take a few seconds. But it

I was just at Fry's today and saw a CompactFlash PCMCIA adapter. I
have a Canon G2, so I may try that also. I know that doesn't help you
though. ;)Never seen a Memory Stick adapter.

Someone already pointed out that USB won't work. Another option may be to
find a PCMCIA card reader for whatever media your camera uses. I use a
Compact Flash reader and a 64M CF card as a "RAM disk" in my 5300.
Perhaps one is available for the media you want to use. IIRC the memory
stick by Sony could be put in a floppy disk reader, but I don't know if
that works with Macs?

Hope this helps,

True, but for your purposes: just use a PC Card Adapter like this one:

(This was just a quick search, but there are tons of them out there, just
google for "Memory Stick PC Card Adapter")
I've found that these Adapters work better than cables anyways, and you
preserve camera battery power ...

Well John, what is actually happening is that the utility is simply writing
Zero's to the drive. Although it "looks" like it's doing a LLF it's simply
not possible.
