Suggestions wanted on adding wireless
The 15 second synopsis: currently have a non-wireless router dishing cable modem to 2 desktop Macs a 3400 docking station; thinking of getting a wireless card for the 3400 -- question is, what's the best (easiest, cheapest, etc.) way to add wireless at the router end? The only alternatives I've seen are to hang an AirPort Base Station off my remaining free port on the router, or to replace the router with a wireless one. Are there any less expensive devices to hang off that free port to give me wireless? (I've not seen any, hence this query...) Are there any less expensive devices to hang off that free port to give me wireless? (I've not seen any, hence this query...) The Linksys WAP11, if you can find it, is a single ethernet port wireless access point. They should be pretty cheap on eBay. The ORiNOCO AP500 and/or RG1000 (again, if you can find it) or something like that are the equivalent of the AP Base Station. They even work with the AirPort config utilities. Some of the other ORiNOCO stuff might be useful too. I believe either of those can also be configured as a bridge if you ever decide you want to connect your LAN to a wider WLAN, as opposed to splitting a WLAN off your LAN. There are other solutions, but I haven't been looking lately. I'm sure D-Link and some of the cheaper PC-centric solutions will work, if you do your research. Recall on G3 Powerbook AC Adapters
There's an important recall this morning for more than 570,000 AC adapters from Apple. The computer maker is recalling the two-pin AC adapters that came with the Apple Macintosh Powerbooks. Re: Recall on G3 Powerbook AC Adapters
Which books had two prongers? Which books does this affect? The two prong adapters were sold in North and Latin America, as well as the Asia-Pacific region (including Japan). 3 pronged adapters were sold in Europe and elsewhere. This affects all PowerBooks G3 and anyone who bought a second power adapter (M4402) to power their 1400, 3400, or Kanga. This is old news. The recall was announced almost two years ago (June of 2001, I think). 15 PowerBook G4 spotted in strange commercial
Ive been seeing this commercial run twice on FOX during the Simpsons. A woman is sitting at her desk. There is a G4 on it. But thats just the beginning. People start throwing things at her, and then she gets out of her cubicle and walks. The PowerBook G4 is revealed to be stuck to her buttox by the LCD. It is open 90 degrees, just as it would be on any desk. It just bounces around, and the woman has like other office supplies stuck to her as well I havent heard what the commercial is saying though cause ive been listening to music. The best part is, the PowerBook is ON the whole time it is stuck to her buttox. Its clearly running OSX, and some window is open but I don't know what for. PowerBook 1400 Battery Reconditioning Problem
Hello everyone! As some may or may not know, I recently purchased two PowerBook 1400s for my wife and I. We've loved the design since way back and found two killer deals on them. Anyways... So they arrive and they work great and look like they've never been taken out of the box. Execept for the batteries, they both left much to be desired. The machines work flawlessly though. My battery would last a good 3-5 minutes and then hit reserve power and hers would last approx. 30-35 minutes and do the same. I figured some battery reconditioning was in order before I set out for new batteries at $100+ each. I used Battery Amnesia on mine, the latest version, after reading its rave reviews on the web. It worked. I now have a good 40 minutes of battery power, not too shabby! When I ran the program it would kill the battery in a matter of ohh.. 1hr 30mins to 2hrs and I'd recharge fully and do it again. Did it 6 times until I saw consistant results. All is well on that one. On hers, I haven't been able to kill the battery. When I run Battery Amnesia it'll get to the point where the system says It's running on very low power and will go to sleep to save the system. At that point it goes to sleep and will not wake up. And that's it. If I let it, it'll sleep for 10+ hours like that. I finally was tired after hour 10 and plugged it in and canceled it. Mine did that but would die some time later. Maybe 20 mins. So I figured I'd try Apple's Battery Reconditioning. Tried it on mine first and it worked. I followed the instructions, plugged it in, and let it do its thing. A couple of hours later, I was done. On hers, it sits there for 8+ hours trying to work. I gave up after 8 hours (and trying battery amnesia previously 4 times) and figured someone out there could shed some light on this. Appologies for the long email but it bugs me when I get an email asking for help and the problem is a one-liner or not described properly. Here are the specs on the two machines, for what it's worth: (The one with the battery recondition problem) PowerBook 1400c MacOS 9.0.4 NewerTech 250/1MB G3 Upgrade (latest newer drivers from OWC) 64 MB RAM 6 GB IBM HD Floppy Drive (have cd but floppy stays in) Battery (The one that battery reconditioning works on) PowerBook 1400cs MacOS 9.1 (but also worked when it arrived with 7.6) NewerTech 250/1MB G3 Upgrade (latest newer drivers from OWC) 64 MB RAM 750 MB HD Floppy Drive Battery Thanks in advance, Chris K. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
