I have two of these systems, and have never had an operating problem with
them. Don't expect state-of-the-art digital picture quality though... but for a
"semi-permanent" setup IMHO it should be great for the price.

PB170 Tunnel Vision

2003-06-02 Thread Steve Pullan
Hi all,

I have an old PowerBook 170 that I’m trying to resurrect but it has an
LCD problem.

It has light shadowy tinges to the extremes of the display which get
darker and grow inwards after a while of use, so much so that it looks
like you have tunnel vision with only the middle 2/3 of the screen (an
oval in the middle) visible.

Is this a common problem, and is it fixable (other than replacing the
LCD)?

Thanks.

…Steve

Re: Virtual PC...latest version for 603e?

2003-06-02 Thread Mehdi El Gueddari
> Thanks Mehdi, I just purchased VPC 3 with Windoze 95 on Ebay last night.
> How do you like it with Windoze 95? Is it sutiable?

Yep, a wee slow on my 200Mhz 3400 but still very usable (though not for
everyday use). I guess that it's gonna be much faster on yours as it's a
240Mhz one. You can try to allocate as much RAM as possible to VPC to speed
up the thing (VPC uses only a few MB of RAM and the rest is given to
Windows). Remember that the first version of Windows 95 was very buggy, the
next version (called Win 95OSR2) was - and is still :-) - much more stable.

And i don't know if you have ever used VPC before. If not, it's a very
convenient soft, you can display Windows in a window or in full screen mode,
drag & drop files between Win and macOS, use your floppy and CD drives
without any problems, share folders between the PC and the mac...

A last tip: if you install Windows from a standard Windows CD (not the one
included with VPC), look at the README or help files in the VPC folder to
find out how to install the drags & drop features as you need to install a
piece of software on Windows for those features to work properly.

Peace,
Mehdi

56 + 16 = 72 and the 5300 will only go up to 64MB total, so to max out the
RAM you need a 48MB card; the ce can't cope with the 56MB.

This is their minimum recommended requirements. I have had Mozilla and
Nestcape 6+ running on my 1400c with the original 166 MHz processor, and it
runs even better now with my 333 G3 Sonnet upgrade.

Trash the Netscape preferences file and try to run it again. That has been
affecting many upgrading. It's even bit me on my G4 OS X machine.

Could be that 9.x is the earliest supported. But as far as hardware goes,
you should be able to run it fine on your machine. Like I said I've ran it
for years on my 1400c with 48MB Ram and 166MHz processor.

Mozilla 1.0.1 and maybe 1.2 will be as high as you can go without running OS
X. 1.3+ are OS X only builds.

Netscape 7.01 = Moz 1.01

Hey listers... another "Strange Apple placement" ... and THIS one is on point
too!!!

I was in my local Toyota dealership today. I THOUGHT I was there to look for
a part for my '91 MR2, but my wife had other designs... namely a Sequoia
($35k? Yikes!). Actually, I was taken in by the new Sienna minivan (wow! auto-side
doors AND a rearview camera!) which my wife hates, but I digress...

ANYWAY(!), in the lobby/waiting area, they had a big picture/mural on the
wall of a laptop opened to a website or something (guess which one?), advertising
it. Well, in keeping w/ the topic, I looked to see if the laptop had any
identification, thinking that there was NO WAY it would

..."Macintosh Powerbook G3!" ;-)

And I mean VERY obvious; the Powerbook was about as big as the Sienna!

A 280 LB upgrade will require a 280 chassis as well, the heatsink is
different. My advice would be to leave the 270c as-is but keep yer eyes
out for a maxed-ram 280/c, or better, a maxed-ram 2300c.

RAM cards for earlier Duos work in later Duos, but larger/later cards may
not be able to be completely utilized in earlier Duos.
Some devnote quotes:
(Duos 210-250) "Third-party developers using 16-megabit DRAMs can develop
expansion cards that
extend capacity to 24 megabytes."

(Duo 270C) "8 MB memory expansion card expands memory capacity up to 12
MB; third-party
SIMM (single inline memory) card expands memory capacity up to 32 MB."

"In the PowerBook Duo 280 and 280c computers, the RAM expansion connector
has an additional signal, RAS(7) on pin 24, that provides addressing for
up to 36 MB of expansion RAM. A RAM expansion card for the newer machines
also works in the older machines, except that any RAM over 32 MB is
ignored."

"The RAM expansion card for the Macintosh PowerBook Duo 2300c computer is
compatible with the one used in earlier PowerBook Duo models. The
computer accepts
up to 48 MB on a RAM expansion card."

-summary for your viewing pleasure-
model baseram max ram
Duos 210/230/250 -4 MB 24 MB
Duo 270C -4 MB 32 MB
Duo 280 + 280c - 4 MB 36 MB
Duo 2300c - 8 MB 56 MB

As for 68K vs. PPC, speed depends on whether the app in question is
native PPC or must be emulated. Well written native-PPC apps will almost
always be faster than the 68K version was on a 68K Mac. Should one
upgrade thus depends on what apps one intends to use.

A big problem with the 2300c however is PPC code is always larger than
68K code, so if the 2300 in question doesn't have roughly double the ram
of the previous 68K Duo it will surely disappoint. 48MB cards can be hard
to find and rather pricey.

If there's one thing overwhelmingly in the 2300's favor, it's the ability
to natively use newer/larger/faster ATA disks. A modern drive speeds
everything up in a 2300, making a tremendous positive difference in
usability.

Since VPC shares your network connection, you'd have to have the
connection first, if I understand what you're saying.

Actually, I just recalled an article I had a URL for (appropriately buried,
of course)...

FWIW, this seems to provide a pretty thorough going-over of this subject.
About the only question I see is, which wireless access point is
configurable either from a Mac or over a web interface? Failing that which
ones require a PC, but will work from VirtualPC?
Thanks.

your money accepted by Apple when you bought 1 or 2 or 3 AC adapters.
That's really a shame... Sounds a lot like me vs. Apple on the 5300
REA. I just can't get them to take my PowerBooks in for the REA
(they've each been through it, probably twice - but they still have
the symptoms).

It's probably more a function of what kind of day the person on the
other end of the phone is having. If (s)he's had a good day, (s)he
probably won't argue too hard.

I guess my response was more a product of getting it to work right
away, the first time. It seems that not everyone was that lucky.

Peace,
Drew

Re: Powerbook 170 screen problem

2003-06-02 Thread Gary D. Adams
I suppose it *could* be, but check the cable itself. Are there any
crimps in any of the "lines"--the internal "wires"?

Sometimes the connector partially disconnects when the book opens and
closes, flexing it. If the cable gets pinched between the pastics that
can disrupt the video signal.

Hey, Chris

I have a PB Firewall. I'd be glad to let you use my pb number.
sometimes the rules have to get bent to be fair.

That is exactly what I did do and Apple told me just what I reported in my
previous email:

1) that they will not send you a replacement AC adapter unless you enter the
serial number of a Powerbook covered by the program (yes, that's what they
said), i.e., a Wallstreet or a Lombard.
I had tried to get a VST (Apple) AC replaced using a Pismo serial number.
Even when I spoke to someone on the phone, they refused to replace the AC.

2) I tried entering my old Lombard's serial number, but a message popped up
saying that that PB had "already gone thru the program" and therefore was no
longer eligible.
I called Apple and they confirmed that any given PB can only "go thru" the
program once.

Obviously the arguments make little sense, and even conflict with Apple's
own written terms and conditions for the program.

But they insist on referring to "Powerbooks covered by the program", when in
reality it's AC adapters that are covered by the program.

The point about any given PB going thru the program just once seems
completely arbitrary, as that is not mentioned in the terms and conditions.

It's not really a big deal, it's just that I don't like getting jerked
around and given pseudo legalistic (though in reality completely subjective)
reasons and explanations for failing to fulfil the terms of the program that
Apple itself set up.

If it all comes to down to your powers of persuasion on the phone, though,
that's another story. I guess I'm not too persuasive. Though being
persuasive is not mentioned as one of the requirements to get your AC
adapter replaced; just as it wasn't mentioned as a prerequisite to getting
your money accepted by Apple when you bought 1 or 2 or 3 AC adapters.

Usually, that's the result of the connector cable being cripped or not
making good contact.

Pull the top plastics and check the cable.

Re: Can't load os 10.3 update

2003-06-02 Thread Andrew Kershaw
I recently got Jaguar and am trying to update it to .3 When i picked
HD on install, it gave me an error message saying that it required
198mb of hd space. well, i do have a small hd on this Pismo 6gb, but
i have over 2gb left. What's wrong? TIA
I can think of at least two things that are wrong.

Firstly, OS X 10.3 ("Panther") has not been released. If you've got
it, you either stole it, illegally downloaded a pre-release version,
or you are a developer and are probably breaking some sort of NDA by
talking about it. If this is a typo, maybe you mean OS X 10.2.3...
If so, there is a 10.2.6 update out now.

Secondly, you are talking about a Pismo (PowerBook G3) which is not
on-topic for this list. Go to the g-books list.

Peace,
Drew
