Re: 5300cs Hurt Feelings?

2003-07-20 Thread David R.
Well, I've got an interesting follow-up to make. Basically tried a twist of
what Josh suggested. Removed battery, then plugged in AC Adapter, powered
right up. Put battery back in, let it charge up. But get this! Unplugged
AC, let computer run on battery. Not low power mode nor sleep. The unit
stayed on for almost 5 hours from 4:15 PM to 9 PM. Granted I wasn't using
computer but it was powering screen all along. So I am thinking that this
complete power drain of battery and restart method has basically zeroed the
battery memory. Could be a potential charging technique here.

I'm charging it up here again and going to let Battery Amnesia run it down
to see how long that takes. The norm for this battery is about 1.6 hours.
I'll report on results tomorrow sometime.

I wish it were that easy.

It does it both when its on the battery as well as when its on the AC adapter.

Even when the battery bay is empty and its on the AC!

Free wireless access hot-spots

2003-07-20 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Ok,

So I know Schlotsky's was experimenting with free wireless Internet
access in Texas for a while... Has anyone been there?

I was thinking it would be fun to put together a list of free Wi-Fi
hot-spots (like at Starbucks or Borders, but FREE) or at least to
hear people's experiences with them.

For the record, I'm not talking about "war driving" and finding open
networks - I'm talking about genuine, advertised, free and open
wireless networks for Joe on the street.

Anybody care to share? Here in the Denver area, I haven't found any
that are free. But then again, I haven't been looking too hard.

And don't feel limited to talking about the US. I want to hear from
people world-wide! ;-)

Peace,
Drew

Just back from the pub, eh? Man, no fair!!! ;-)

I hear some pubs over in the UK are experimenting with wireless
internet access for pub-goers. Have you had that experience yet?

Now that would be tops - take my PowerBook down to the local pub (ok,
micro-brewery...), order a cold one, and sit back with the Internet
at my fingertips.

This give me an idea for an interesting thread... Free wireless
access while out on the town

Had the same problem with my 1400. I couldn't pick it up with my left hand
without it just dying. Turned out that the battery contacts on the logic
board had become weak with age. I had to carefully bend them so they put
more pressure on the removable battery contacts. Now the slight chassis flex
doesn't disconnect the battery. I wish all my repairs were this easy!!!

OK, maybe try taking the main battery out and leaving it out for a while (say 2
hours) and then plugging the system in at the mains. I'm not sure what happens
but if you leave them with a very dead battery in, the green light comes on and
it doesn't do much else. The flat battery may drain some circuit inside the
laptop or something like that.

This is exactly the problem I have had with my book, and when I took the battery
out of my 'book and plugged it into the mains it came on the next time I hit
reset on the back.

As I forgot to mention in my other post, I think the problem is caused by a
dodgy PRAM battery as my PB won't keep the time well at all unless it is plugged
in and charged quite regularly, especially when it hasn't been used for a while.

Also, I knew those were NiMH batteries - don't know why I typed NiCad? Maybe I
shouldn't email when I've just got back home from the pub :)

All the best,
Josh

Re: Upgrading a PB 5300ce

2003-07-20 Thread Tom and Lisa P
Drew, it could be a heat related problem. Maybe if you had a
beefier heat sink ?
Yeah, I figured. The heat sink could probably use some thermal
grease. The heat sink itself can't really be made any beefier
(space is very limited in the 5300), but it doesn't exactly make
firm contact with the CPU. The 190's heat sink (I've got a 190
around here for parts) has a nice thermal pad. The 5300's doesn't.
Maybe I'll scavenge that... I'd swap the heat sinks outright, but
the 190's is a different shape (it doesn't have to cool the PMU on
the 190 like it does on the 5300 since they are different designs)

Also, does your motherboard have a Chips and Technologies 65220 or
65225 video controller ?

Yep. It's on the underside, so it threw me for a second...
The IC is marked "CHIPS T65225."
FWIW, Apple says the video controller is similar to the one in the
5x0, except that it can address 1MB of VRAM. I don't know if that
will help you in your search for documentation, but who knows...

Peace,
Drew
--
I was just thinking that if you had the 65220 that might explain why
you cant get the extra 512 K of VRAM you soldered onto the board to
work well.

As a side note, my 5300cs/e (5300cs overclocked to 117MHz) works
great. However, I find that leaving it turned on for weeks at a
time tends to introduce strange video artifacts (like the pointer
leaving parts of itself all over the display when it moves). Like I
said, this only happens if the book is on for weeks at a time (I was
using it as a wireless network bridge). Turning it off for an hour

Re: Upgrading a PB 5300ce

2003-07-20 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Is there any way to upgrade the processor in the Powerbook 5300 line? And did
any of the 5300s come with a secondary cache?
Thanks,

Craig W.
THe only way to upgrade the CPU is to desolder it and resolder a
faster one down. A very non-trivial task, but something I am working
on.

No L2 cache, no way to put one on.

Although it's not technically an upgrade, you can speed up the 5300ce
by overclocking it. Increasing the bus speed is probably the best
way to go. I'd try upping the bus speed to 40MHz and dropping the
CPU:bus ratio to 3:1 for a 120MHz/40MHz 5300. The CPU should easily
handle 3 extra MHz. Your biggest speed boost will be from the bus
speed increase (which will speed up memory throughput - a big
limitation for this computer).

You could also just try clocking the bus up and leaving the
multiplier alone. I don't know how the 117MHz 603e will handle being
clocked up to something like 140MHz. That's 23 extra MHz over what
is "nominal." The 100MHz part handles 117 fine, so who knows, maybe
the 117MHz part will work at 140. You could also increase the bus to
38MHz thereby giving you a 133MHz cpu. That's probably a safer bet...

As a side note, my 5300cs/e (5300cs overclocked to 117MHz) works
great. However, I find that leaving it turned on for weeks at a time

neat image cataloger for older macs

2003-07-20 Thread Brian

I use ImageAXS 4.1 on my 1400, it's pretty handy. One of my main
uses for the 1400 is to offload images from my digital camera when
I'm on trips, via PCMCIA CF and smartmedia adapters (who needs USB??
this is a better solution...)

This auction is supposedly for v4.0 Win and Mac versions both (I
emailed, it's not specified in the auction); this software isn't
supported any longer but per their website you can get the 4.1 update
if you email them.

I've played with several shareware image catalogers but this is the
one I ended up keeping on the laptop. I use a different tool if I am
going to build a little webpage with previews though, ImageAXS won't
do that.

Anyway for $10 ($3 plus shipping) it looked like a good risk to get
the Win version, too. Per google search results, there may be an
issue with the Windows 4.0 grabbing TIFFs from a CD but since
everything I do is from the HD, that doesn't bother me.

Anyway if you have been thinking of doing something like this, you
might want to check the auction out. There are 2 more copies BIN for
$3.

If you have another tool you like already, good for you :)
