Currently, I'm running a PB 1400c/166, 64 megs RAM, OS 8.1.

Second, I recently read about using compact flash cards to extend
the memory on this computer; is this true, and could somebody
explain how this works in laymen's terms please.

Brian,

You *cannot* increase the size of the Mac's RAM with a Compact Flash (CF) card.

The CF card is read by the Mac as a type of external disk drive.

Some people have had success in using them as emergency boot disks,
whenin you install a System Folder and whatever disk recovery
applications you use. All you need is a CF card big enough to hold
the files.

You just insert the CF card, with a CF-to-PCMCIA adapter, into a PC
Card slot, power up the PB and do the four-finger salute
(apple-option-shift-delete keys) to make sure it boots off of a disk
different than the internal (alternately, you can select the CF
"disk" using the Startup Disk control panel, if the PB is initially
bootable from the HD).

This is nice if you don't have a functioning CD-ROM drive, or have to
use an external CD-ROM, like in my 5300cs. (Alas, I could never get
it to work on my 5300cs, but many people have had success with the
1400.)

You can also store files on it, read/write to it, just like any HD.

And, you can select a CF "disk" for use as the disk location for
Virtual Memory or cache memory for your web browser. For VM, turn the
option for VM *on* in the Memory control panel. Then select the CF
"drive" and tell it how much of the memory space you want to use.

Similarly for web browser cache, just tell the browser the location
and size of the cache file in the browser's Preferneces.

There are some limitations with the CF read/write lifetimes (range of
millions to tens-of-millions of cycles as MTTF). Still, they are
pretty cheap for what they do, especially the lower-valued cards.

Regards,

Bob Eye

Hmm. Well, I don't know about booting from an internal Zip. The one in my
Wallstreet needs the Iomega driver to mount, so I don't know how one
would boot from it since the driver loads during boot.

There are cables and adapters that let you connect to the SCSI port on
the 1400. I have a bunch of different kinds. Contact me off-list if you
might be interested in purchasing one.

By far the easiest way to do this is make the floppies >>

I've been following this line of thought in digest mode and thought I would
intervene. I happen to have a sleeve of the floppies of system 7.0.1 At least
that what it says on the outside of the package. Inside there are 6
floppies. I
believe I picked these up when attempting to get my Duo230 up and running
only to find out I couldn't use them. So I have no use for them. If you are
willing to pay postage from Mpls 55417 to wherever you are I would
be glad to let
them go. They look as if they might fit in an overnight letter or an envelope
of that size.

Brad(RasAzul)
we fiddled a bit with a powebook 150 and that one needs special
systemdisks I vaguely remember they were 7.1.1 or something like
that. anyone ?

I do have an external HD, but no means of connecting it to my Powerbook. Same with an
external Zip drive. The only other CD drive I have is USB, so it's incompatible with
my Powerbook. Any way to boot up off of the internal zip drive?

The 1400 is PCMCIA. This is NOT Cardbus. Can't do USB on a 1400.

Extending memory? Well, maybe you can use a PCMCIA adapter and a compact
flash card to be your RAM Disk, but I don't think you gain much. Haven't
tried it, however.

Do you have an external CD Drive you can use? Maybe an external HD you
can use as a startup disk? Norton can only do limited repairs to the
startup disk. Sort of like working on your car's engine while it is
running.

PB 1400 questions

2003-08-17 Thread Darkwolf45
Currently, I'm running a PB 1400c/166, 64 megs RAM, OS 8.1.
I am wondering a little about some of the options I have. First of all, I saw a
PCMCIA card in a macmall catalog- USB 2-port PCMCIA Card- it says that it works with
any 32 bit, type II Cardbus slot. I'd like to be sure though, since I don't know
much about PCMCIA cards- will this work in my PB 1400?
Second, I recently read about using compact flash cards to extend the memory on this
computer; is this true, and could somebody explain how this works in laymen's terms
please.
Third, and most important, I am having a little difficulty with my PB- Norton
Utilities say that i need to repair the disk because the free block count is
incorrect. I don't think it's a major problem, Norton says it can repair it, but it
needs to do it while my intyernal HD is not the startup disk. Tried the CD, for some
reason it freezes when i Use it. The only other option I can think of is that I use a
Zip disk I have made with a system folder and norton utilitieson it. The only problem
is that I can't get my computer to boot up on the zip disk. This disk is an old
standard of mine that i use to use for big disk repair jobs, and works well on other
computers via an external zip drive, but for some reason it does not work through the
internal VST zip drive on my PB. Slecting it as the startup disk via the startup disk
control panels does not work. Any help?
Thanks in advance. I realize that I have little to offer, and alot to ask, so
assistance is appreciated.

2003-08-17 Thread Jean-Jacques de Roover
Hello all,

I recently came into possession of a pb180, and then ran away with the
circus (long story). Now that I've returned, I'd like to get it
working, and see what it's capable of. I've tried powering it up, and
I'm getting what I can only assume are the chimes of death, after which
it promptly powers down.

In the ideal, after reviving it, I'd like to see this beastie provide
simple word processing, and if possible, e-mail access.

Any guidance, particularly in the Chicago area, would be most
appreciated.

For the record, I don't have any system disks to boot off of. I'll be
trolling the web for downloads.

Thanks!
