Re: What did I just fry?

2004-05-11 Thread Dan Palka
In Paragraph 1, Line 1, of email response 2 to the post "What did I
fry" that you didn't read I acknowledged (rather playfully with the
word "Woops!") that i was quite wrong and somehow missed that the
original poster said Lombard.

I must not have added my smileys :) to denote that Im always a peppy
person and mean nothing by the rudeness..

As for the Cardbus thing...

The original poster of the Wireless 1400 topic mentioned nothing about
Cardbus. After someone suggested that it might be a Cardbus card, I
pointed out that it couldn't possibly be since the original poster said
he already had the card in the slot and showing up on the desktop.
However, even after my post people kept insisting it must be a Cardbus
card. This was worrying me that the original poster might become
confused and nobody would solve the actual problem.

And they kept coming and coming. Cardbus was being mentioned by
everybody in every response. It started to become annoying my mailbox
filling with emails talking of Cardbus when that had nothing to do with
anything. It was as if nobody was paying any attention to my posts
about it not possibly being a Cardbus card - save for the original
poster.

It wasn't Cardbus LOL

I was just aggrivated - sorry if you took offense to that but you must
see my point.

I haven't had any trouble with my cs/117 upgraded to a G3/333 and a c screen.
I don't remember the version of the Sonnet extension, but it's been rock
solid under 9.1 (the rest of the stats: 1400c+G3/333+512K, 60MB RAM, original
750MB disk). It might be something about the /400, but I can't imagine what.
I'm planning to get a /400 in the near future myself.

Did yours start with 16MB or 12MB? Mine was a 12MB (8MB plus 4MB Apple
module), and upgrading the 4MB to an 8MB Apple module caused no end of
trouble which went away when I put the 4MB back in.

This is kind of off topic from your wireless questions, however seeing
that you have the same set up as I do I have a couple of questions.
What did your 1400 start life as? 117, 133, or 166? The reason I ask
is that the Sonnet G3/400 I have makes the machine crash whenever I try
and turn on the extension for the backside cache. Some have suggested
that it might be the difference in the 117 logic board vs that of the
133 and 166. Have you ever had any problems with the machine crashing
due to the Sonnet extension? What version of the extension do you use?
 I have a 117 upgraded to a Sonnet G3/400 running 9.1, the original
750MB HD, and 54MB RAM. I have 64MB, but the 8MB Apple Module crashes
with both of the piggybacked 24 chip modules in (maybe logic board
related too??). I have a Dell Truemobile 1150 for wireless purposes
just on a side-note to go back to your original topic.

The reason I ask is because I don't see many people with the G3/400.
Instead I see people with the 366 and 466 models. Thanks for any
answers you may be able to provide.

Re: dim screen on 3400

2004-05-11 Thread George Mogiljansky
Yes, I suspect the backlight. If you do decide to
change it yourself, first remove it to check the size
and part# but mainly to see if its soldered or
clipped. I researched this extensively, so use a
dust-free space before taking apart the screen (and
when installing), otherwise the new backlight and the
labour will be largely a waste.
Backlights are not expensive over here in N.A.
I haven't tried yet to do this to a Wallstreet screen,
largely because of one person's bad experience (either
he bought a used backlight and/or replaced it in a
dusty environment).
If you have plant incubators, maybe that could be a
help. Mine is a long term project!
Best
George

Just a wild guess but the HD may have shorted out. ( or blown up like
a clutch on an Edsel ! )

The piece you heard rattling may have caused a short circuit. Try
another drive ( from the swap list ?)

Hope it didn't effect the interface.

Hi Listers !

2004-05-11 Thread Fluxstringer
Hi PowerBook listers !

After several years on the PCI and swap lists I look forward to
participating on the PowerBook list.
My new-used 1400 should arrive in a few days and I am looking for
cost effective ways ( read cheap ! )
of getting the maximum use out of it.

I have some built up Mac desktops to handle the intense work . I'm
getting the 1400 for a lug around workhorse in everyday use.
I'd like your advice on getting better display and power. So I guess
I'll just read the list for a while and see what goes on..

I don't assume I know anything about Powerbooks beyond ( maybe ) the
operating system. But freeing myself from a particular place to do
all of my computing seems like a great idea right now. And I read
that the 1400 is a very stable and serviceable machine.

So I'm glad there is an LEM list for Powerbooks to make the
experience smoother and wish you all good computing.

Well, one of our 3400's has slowly been getting dimmer and dimmer.
I swapped the screen with our other one and the other screen is fine

Am I right in assuming the backlight is about burnt out?

Guess its not worth repairing, so I'll keep it for spares.
