It was never done.

And now that the ALI and other single-chip solutions exist for USB and
Firewire (and combined USB/Firewire), and these chips completely
incorporate the PCI Bridge function formerly provided by the separate TI
chip, is is very unlikely that anyone will ever invest in a NuBus-type
USB or Firewire chip.

There is simply no market for such a product.

Re: PCMCIA USB 2.0 card for Powerbook 1400c?

2004-07-21 Thread KG
>>Apparently the PCMIA slot on the
>>Powerbook 1400 isn't fully cardbus compliant

It's not CardBus compliant at all. To do CardBus, you need a 32-bit PCMCIA
controller on a PCI architecture. The PCMCIA controller on the 1400 is a
16-bit controller running on the NuBus-based architecture of the 1400's
logic board.

It's the 2400, 3400 and Kanga which are partially CardBus compliant--they
are PCI logic boards with a 32-bit controller, but they don't have the
correct card cage for CardBus. That doesn't stop people from using CardBus
cards anyway, either by trimming the edges of the cards or by paying MCE to
replace the card cage.

Even on these machines, USB 2.0 is a no-go. The USB drivers for Mac OS 9
only support USB 1.1. You can use a USB 2.0 card in the slots, but you will
only get USB 1.1 performance. You need OS X for USB 2.0 support on a Mac.
(Hmmm...anyone got USB 2.0 going on a 3400c running 10.1.5 under
XPostFacto?)

As far as your question, it would not be impossible to create a USB card for
the 1400, but so far as anyone on this discussion list knows, it was never
done.

The errors you are getting are due to the 540 not being able to find

Make sure you haven't typoed the MAC address in the static DHCP

It REALLY sounds like the DCP server is not giving it what it needs.
Try manually setting the IP, DNS, and Gateway address it's supposed to
have assigned by the DHCP server.
If all of this is correct, try a clean install of 8.1. Maybe your
TCP/IP extensions are messed up.
ok, tried all of the above and more with no success:
- wiped disk and re-installed OS 8: no go.
- wiped disk, copied over in Target mode the HD contents of another 540
which connects well: still nothing.
- Played with the IP address, re-configured the router, etc.
May be the TCP/IP control panel reports the MAC address of the
Ethernet controller wrongly?? But:
- Set the router to asssign dynamically IP address and set TCP/IP
control
panel accordingly: All other machines show the assigned IP address and
connect fine, this particular one does not get the address.

So the problem seems definitely between the router and the PB and not
in
software. Considering that the connecting cable+transceiver work with
other machines, it must then be something in the PB. As you say,
Appletalk uses
the same hardware as TCP/IP, it might be possible though that the
hardware
is partially defective? (so that Appletalk goes through but TCP/IP has
problems). I'm out of ideas...

Have you tried it on a different port on the router? Clutching at
straws here...

I'm at the 'shake a rattle and some chicken feathers at it' stage
myself.

I don't know all the down and dirty hardware details of this particular
ethernet adapter, but I'm hard pressed to see the difference between
appletalk and TCP/IP down on that low hardware level...

You're right, citing Holmes, 'after all the possible has been
eliminated, only the impossible remains.'

It's got to be the mobo and some demonically subtle hardware failure.

I'd be interested in this too, but I don't think
it's possible. Apparently the PCMIA slot on the
Powerbook 1400 isn't fully cardbus compliant, so
USB simply won't happen.

An alternative might be to replace the internal HD with say a 30GB version?

I have a PB 1400 and also a 366MHz clamshell

In practical terms, correct. Many moons ago someone mentioned some mythical
16-bit USB card, but none of us mere mortals have found it, let alone Mac

It works fine for some little games that are on

Hey guys,
This is a bit obscure but I would like to get a hold of a PowerBook 145 (not
a b model) to fix up as a present for a friend who got his start in computers
working on a PB 145. It's just a sentamental thing and if it has no working HD
that's OK, I can replace that.

I even have memory and 33.6 modems for those older 100 series PBs.
