pb 520c display repair

2004-08-20 Thread gf sciacca
I have 2 pb 520c displays from which I'd like to get a fully fuctional
one. One (A) has a toast backlight, the other (B) an LCD with ghost
effects (apple claims they're normal, but they did not appear in the
other LCD). Display B is usable, just it isn't pretty.

Is it wiser to replace the LCD panel (from display A to B) or the
backlight (from display A to B)? Or leave them alone? I guess the 2nd
solution whoule be the choice, but that bulb seems so fragile... I
thought to ask first, as I'm a first timer with displays, LCDs, etc...
Precautions, advice? Replace? Leave it alone?

Might it be that the gosthing effects are not inherent to the LCD panel
but to the display circuitry?

thanks in advance for the expertise, gianfranco

Pismo is of course the best, but Lombard and Wallstreet are fine machines as

Whichever suits your budget is best.

2004-08-20 Thread Alex Santos 100MB Neostrada Mail
Hi Dan,
Yes I am aware that there are 4 models, thanks for informing me.
Actually, I don't know what to buy. I want to hook it up to my Newton
and it will be second mac for my wife to use for doing her university
work. Certainly economics play a role.

What are the main differences between the Lombard and Pismo? Are the
RAM limits different? Are the motherboards different in terms of speed?
What about other expansion possibilities. Are they both easy to open. A
load of questions, I know. Maybe there is a must see website you can
give me the link to.

Thanks for the reply.

load of questions, I know. Maybe there is a must see website you can
 give me the link to.

www.lowendmac.com can answer all your questions. But in brief, here's what
you need to know about the various PowerBooks G3:

Kanga (1997-98): Had a 250 MHz G3 on a 50 MHz bus crammed into a PowerBook
3400c case and mainboard. It can support up to 160 MB of RAM via a
proprietary card. It doesn't officially support OS X, but works with X under
XPostFacto. It's a heck of an OS 9 PowerBook, not recommended under X even
with the hack. It's not fast enough, and can't be CPU upgraded.

WallStreet (1998-99): Came in two generations, with processors between 233
and 300 MHz, all on a 66 MHz bus. They used notebook SDRAM, but generic
notebook SDRAM is cantankerous with it; it's best to use RAM that has been
certified for a WallStreet. Officially supports up to 192 MB, but up to 512
MB seems to work. Supported under OS X up to 10.2.8, can run Panther with
XPostFacto. G3 and G4 processor upgrades are available up to about 500 MHz.
Avoid the cacheless first-generation 233 MHz model like the plague; it's
inferior in most respects even to a 3400c.

Lombard (1999-2000): Came with a 333 or 400 MHz G3, on a 66 MHz bus. Sort of
a transitional model between the WS and the Pismo. Supports up to 512 MB of
RAM and ships with onboard USB and SCSI--the only PowerBook with both
onboard. Fully supported in OS X, all the way to the current 10.3.5, and
there is a 433 MHz G4 upgrade available.

Pismo (2000-01): Shipped with a 400 or 500 MHz G3 on a 100 MHz bus. Pismo is
the first PowerBook that can support all versions of OS X and run them well
in the stock configuation, at least in my opinion. No SCSI on this monster,
but it picks up onboard FireWire. It has a PC Card slot, can support up to 1
GB of RAM, can be upgraded to DVD-RW via a third-party drive, can be
upgraded to a 550 MHz G4 or a 900 MHz G3 and has a great reliability record.
This is the one you want, if you can locate one and can afford it.

As far as pricing, Kangas run anywhere from $125-200, Wallstreet from
$175-275, Lombard from $250-$350, Pismo about $350-450. Pick up a cheap
Pismo 400 and add one of those PowerLogix G3-900 upgrades for $379 and you
have a killer PowerBook, even now.

The Bronze keyboard was the standard keyboard on all Lombards and Pismos...

BTW I don't think you can connect a Newton to either a Lombard or a Pismo
stock. I think you need a Kanga or a Wallstreet (with a serial port) to do
that. Unless the Lombard has a serial Port. I don't remember.

is a disk from a g3.

Could this be why it won't load? Do I need a different version?
All I am wanting to do with the 5300 is be able to install Office 98 for mac

It currently has 7.5 on it.

Some generic brand that doesn't have any logo or marking on it, other than
FireWire IEEE whatever the heck its called. I bought it on eBay for $15
buy it now, brand new. There were dozens of them at the time (about three
months ago).

It looks exactly like the Belkin three-port firewire Cardbus card found
here:

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=Section_Id=2
01526pcount=Product_Id=148854

It is literally identical, even down to little design curves and accents,
and the square thing on top. I'd swear its a Belkin with the label removed,
only the Belkin drivers don't recognize it.

It works though with the stock OS 9 drivers, but ONLY if it is inserted
BEFORE the computer is powered on. Strange...
