Well, it's not that they don't work. They do affect the brightness, it
just doesn't go quite high enough in my opinion. Is the backlight tube
failing the ONLY explanation left? If so...bummer. Does that require a
new display?
Thanks.

Re: few more 170 questions

2004-09-03 Thread Bob C.
Hi Colin,

The PowerBook 170 uses a proprietary RAM module (4mb) made specifically for
that series.
As someone else suggested, your best bet is to join the LEM-swap list, and
see if anyone has an extra for sale.

Do you have the Service Manual yet for the 170? If you need the PDF,
contact me off-list.

To my surprise, it would not open in Office X. Office X had convert

formats, and a couple others- and that was it. No success with either
a .rtf (that they sent next) or a Word 98 file. I didn't try the .rtf
in TextEdit as usually MSoft's RTF format is different enough from
standard, I don't bother.

I had to open the thing on my 1400/9.1 with Office98 when I got home
(which did it perfectly).

Are there other convertors lurking somewhere, to install? I looked on
the Office X CD but don't see any.

Did you run the extras installer? I thought they were in there. I know
that I opened a Word 4 document, right away on my system running Office
X..it even showed the right (old style) icon.

You can't send Word X files to people using a webmail to read their
mails. They won't be able to open the file they can download.
That is wrong. Of the four webmail clients we tested here (horde,
squirrel mail, neomail and Webmail) only one had a problem with this
(the commercial, expensive, Webmail), so it's entirely dependent on the
webmail client, and it is NOT a bug; in fact it's exactly the way the
standards say the e-mail is to be constructed.

In OS X 10.3 you can set Mail to send 'Windows Safe' attachments, or
you can control-click on the file in finder, select archive and send
the compressed Zip file to them.

few more 170 questions

2004-09-03 Thread colin hodder
I have all of the 19 disks for system 7.5.3 now. So, do I just put them
into the computer and open them and go ahead? Or is there something else I
have to do first? I am currently running system 7.0.1.
Also, is it possible to get RAM charger for free somewhere online? I think
it could really help my poor computer deal with it's four MB of RAM. And
speaking of RAM is there some kind of special RAM I would have to get for my
powerbook (different than PC RAM I mean) to get it up to 8MBs. I live in
the least MAC friendly city in the world (St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada).
I haven't found one MAC certified dealer here at all, no second hand stores
selling MACs, and my powerbook is probably one of the only MACs in the whole
city (there can't be more than 100). So anything that can't be bought from
PC dealers or downloaded off the net is pretty much out of my range.
Thanks for any help.
Colin (the computer illiterate).

Re: Powerbook 5300

2004-09-03 Thread Howard R. Katz
I'm using OS 8.1 and iCab as my browser.
I use my 5300 quite a bit, including using it to access the internet via a
wifi card. May not be the fastest, but it works. I'm also the Clerk of
our local Township, and that little 5300 is great for taking the minutes
of the monthly Township meetings. :)

The only thing I haven't been able to do that I've wanted to is access
gmail--iCab won't be able to until the 3.0 release or so I'm told. The
post about Mozilla being able to sounds hopeful--I'll have to check out
compatibility with 8.1. :)

You can't send Word X files to people using a webmail to read their
mails. They won't be able to open the file they can download. 2
files are actually sent, with the exact same name, one a stupid icon,
the other the real file. Webmail can only access the icon file, which
is useless. Only one attachemnt is displayed although both are there,
and only one (the first, the icon) can be downloaded.

Although it should work, and I'm told Apple is following a spec, no
webmail I've found actually uses that spec. The recipient will only be
able to access the wrong file. They'll tell you the .doc is corrupt.

For whatever reason ('nuff said) my wife only uses webmail to access
her univ. email. She can tell who is using an OS X Mac as the only way
she can get their docs to open is to forward it to me (OS X), and I
upload the real .doc to our server.

I figured the best list to find out about import issues would be this
one, since people here have older laptops with Office98 and then fancy
laptops, and desktops, with X and Office X; all on one list :)
