advice re loose plastic on 3400/ 3500 CD drive
Advice please: I have a CD drive from a powerbook 3400/ 3500 laptop. The CD drive is working but the plastic area which you grasp to pull the drive from the laptop is loose at one end and I fear it will break off with the drive still inside the laptop. Could someone please tell me how this plastic part attaches? Is one able to fix it, or is it held by plastic tabs and one must have broken off? Is it possible to buy a non-working CD drive with a good case and just change over the 'innards'? Thanks -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: 5300 into 5300ce transformation problems
Please correct me if I am wrong but shouldn't the control strip (and the control panel) show 640x480 as well as 800x600? I only get 800x600 as the available resolution and this cannot use thousands since 512 mb is not enough for 800x600. Also at some point there was only 832x624 available inspite this being only a 800x600 screen. Twilight zone? 640x480 should show up... maybe the confusion is caused by the lack of VRAM. Was there anyone successful in soldering the additional 512 vram on the motherboard? I do have a dead 5300ce board on which I believe the vram (and ram) is intact. I was also thinking on soldering the additional ram on the board thus increasing system ram. Any success stories here? Regards, Boris Hmm Dan, was that you that tried this ? SmartMedia 3.3 and 5 volts PC card adapter
I wanted to download the pictures from the Apple QuickTake 200 to the 5300 and the 190 and avoit the CameraConnect nightmare. This Microtech SmartMedia PC card adapter does not work. The 5300 says that the card is defective. Since the SmartMedia works flawlessly with the QuickTake is it possible that the Adapter is broken (it was brand new and boxed). I tried also with a Kanga, a Wallstreet and a G4 Aluminium: the G3 stuck and say unreadable the G4 simply ignores it. 5300 OS 9, Kanga OS 9, 190 8.1. The Apple QT used 5 volts SmartMedia. Wireless Lombard
Trying to go wireless with a 333 Lombard. I am about to order Sonnett's Aria Extreme Card and a Netgear 802.11g Wireless Router. If I'm reading everything correctly (always a big if) this is the only 802.11g card available for a G3 powerbook and it comes with native OSX software. Has anyone used this card on a G3 PB? Has anyone heard much of anything about it? Would you recommend a different router? It's a Lombard 333MHz, 30GB HD, 500MB ram, running Panther. I plan on ordering the parts from Amazon tonight, so any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... New 3400c.
I just got a new to me 3400c at a flea market. It had the HD drive stripped out. I did get a drive housing but the HD drive cable is missing and it's missing a number of screws.Other than that it all seems okay. It did have a 32Mb RAM card so that helps. It came with only a floppy but I swapped in a CD drive from a G3 Kanga. I put a 128Mb CF card and installed OS 8.6 on it. I installed a wireless card and drivers and that works. The battery was flat but fortunately I have others. So know I have a moderately potent laptop with wireless and a tiny drive. Does anyone have a good source for either the HD cable or screws. I found some sources from a web search but I'd just as soon not have to pick one at random. I already checked Wegener, PB Guy and pbparts. I'm pretty sure I can find the metric screws locally if I have to but I'd just as soon get the right ones. -- -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Nope, that would be Drew Kershaw, the maven of the 5300, around here at least. Dunno how he made out though. Drew? dan k Hi guys. I haven't touched this project in over a year. The board has 1 MB (512 512) soldered on, but the 2nd 512kB didn't seem to work the last time I tested it. I've only got one 'ce display, though, and it's in use on my genuine 5300ce. I'm thinking that the issue is that I didn't make good contact with all the solder pads. One of these days I'll go back and re-solder it all. Another thought is that I might be missing a cap or resistor somewhere. But from a board-to-board comparison, I haven't found any of those yet... I haven't tried buzzing out the circuit yet, either... Anyway, I can't think of any technical reason why this wouldn't work if you got the connections made correctly. Hmm. I never got my 8MB VRAM Wallstreet hack working, either. I soldered up the SO-DIMM SGRAM slot just fine, but with the extra 4MB in, ASP, TattleTech, and all the other tools still say that there's only 4MB installed. Also, when the extra 4MB are installed, the colors go a little funky - lots of extra greens. And the icons in the control strip get a little corrupted... So clearly something isn't right there, either. Dan, did you ever try this one?
