missing extensions for PB 1400?

2004-09-27 Thread Andrew
The 1400 saga continues, I'm trying to load an old copy of
Kaleidagraph (version 3.08) on the 1400 (G3 233 OS 8.6).
When I try to run it I get:
"application could not be opened because "Microsoft_OLE2" could not be
found"
I didn't find anything at apple.com but did find a troubleshooting
article (for FoxPro) that suggested that I check and see if I had the
following extensions:
Microsoft OLE Automation version 2.06
Microsoft OLE Library version 2.06

I checked and found:
Microsoft OLE Automation version 2.2
Microsoft OLE Library version 2.2
Strangely enough the program will run on my G3 Lombard (OS 9.2.2) with
version 2.2 of the extensions (and stops working when I remove the
extensions) it doesn't run on the 1400 G3233 (OS 8.6) with the same
extensions.
I'm guessing I need the older version 2.06 versions of the extensions to
be compatible with OS 8.6.
Does this make sense?
Is there anywhere I can find the version 2.06 extensions?

Thanks again
Andrew in Ann Arbor

which Netscape for PB 1400 G3 OS 8.6??

2004-09-27 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Hello all
Thanks for all your help with the 1400 for my Dad.
Thanks especially to Ken Vann for his help and for his wireless FAQ for
older Macs
As suggested by Ken and others I partitioned the 1400 (G3 233 upgrade OS
8.6) disk into 3,3,3 and 10 Gb.
I installed OS 8.6 on the first 2 partitions calling one "EthernetOS"
and one "WirelessOS".
I started from "EthernetOS" and installed the drivers for the Farellon
internal ethernet card and it worked perfectly.
Then I started from "WirelessOS" and installed the Orinoco 7.2 driver
and it worked perfectly with the YDI wireless Diamond card (P/N 012606/B).

Now I'm loading software and am wondering if I should go for Netscape
6.2.2 or if Netscape 7.02 would be better.
7.02 has some nice features (pop-up blocking and better security)
I was thinking that 7.02 would take more RAM (I've only got 64 MB) but
after installing 6.2 on the 1400 I see it takes 28 Mb which is the same
as 7.02 takes on the G3 Lombard.
Is there any reason not to use 7.02?

Thanks

5300 saga

2004-09-27 Thread John Pope
Hi folks
For years I have used a 5300cs to tune pianos. Years ago the power-in jack
kept coming loose and my remedy was to connect the jack to the motherboard
with 3 wires, giving my powerbook a little "power tail". Recently when the
jack came loose from the wires I made a mistake and connected the wires to
the wrong tabs.

There was a spark, and the book has been dead ever since.

I acquired another 5300 (this one was a 5300c), the owner told me that the
display didn't display anything, and that he had been told by a technician
that it needed a new video card.

The first thing I did was just to install my screen onto his computer. It
worked! I was able to swap hard drives and everything was just peachy for
about a week till one day it started up with a blank screen. I restarted
several times via keystroke to no avail.

So the question is... How might I get a working 5300 out of these two
unusable ones?

Re: DHCP on System 7 - Bruce?

From: "Tom W." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: DHCP on System 7 - Bruce?
In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Bruce, oh guru, perhaps you could shed a little more light on this. I
have a mac/windoze network hooked to the net through a router.
I am trying to add a powerbook 520. I tried with system 7.53. I
couldn't
get it to either talk to my os x computers on the network or the net.
Although I could see the OS X computers in the chooser, it wouldn't let
me access them telling me they were using a PAP that system 7.53 didn't
recognize. I then upgraded the pb520 to os 8.1 and set appletalk to
ethernet and tcp/ip to dhcp. Using netscape 3, but still won't access
the net, giving me a socket error or something like that. I can access
appletalk now with 8.1. The PB520 is plugged directly into one of the
ports of the router.
Any ideas on what sendings, both to communicate to the OS X puters and
access the net?
Thanks for any help
Tom
First, in answer to the original question, DHCP should work with System
7. Make sure you have the latest Open Transport installed. I believe
that's version 1.1.2, without checking Apple's Older Software site. I
have used it with 7.5.3 and 7.5.5 on my SE/30, and with 7.6.1 and 8.1
on my PowerBook 540c.
If you want to connect to an OSX machine, try using IP rather than
Appletalk. Not all routers pass AT packets, but IP was built into OS8
and available through OT with System7. I have noticed that with my dead
pram battery the 540c nearly always switches itself back to
communicating through the printer/modem port, and I have to remember to
set it back to ethernet. OS8 made that a little easier with the
Location Manager.

They are both 24V. The 3400's adapter supplies 2A while the Duo only
needs 1A. That's fine, the power supply only what the computer can

With gmail you can! Up to 10 megs. There used to be some file holding
places on the net too where you could upload a file, ftp or through
your browser and then give someone else the password and have them
download it. Not sure if they are still around. Otherwise, MIRc or
something similar.

All Mac PBs can be serviced using T6, T7, T8 and T9 drivers, although T6
and T8 are the most frequently found, with T8 by far the most frequent.
(Some accessory manufacturers used T10 fasteners ... don't remember which
or what).

Every Sears store sells miniature Torx drivers.

They're about $1.95 each, depending upon which part of the country you're
in.

A Torx 9 will work (at least it did on my 3400C). Got my set at
Walmart for 7 bucks, those kind that fold out from a centre storage
like a pocket knife. 9 was the smallest but it worked fine, no chance
of stripping the head. 10 will NOT work.

AFAIK every torx I've run into on a Powerbook is a Torx 8
Sears has them; mine is a Wiha 267-08 I got
from an electronics shop for $4 a few years back. It's got a spinner
cap that makes getting some of those long screws out easily.

Don't go for the driver sets with interchangeable tips, the bit is not
long enough to reach down into some holes on Powerbooks.

Re: DHCP on System 7 - Bruce?

2004-09-27 Thread Tom W.
Bruce, oh guru, perhaps you could shed a little more light on this. I
have a mac/windoze network hooked to the net through a router.
I am trying to add a powerbook 520. I tried with system 7.53. I couldn't
get it to either talk to my os x computers on the network or the net.
Tom

Hello! I have a recently aquired PB 3400c & Duo 230. The Duo 230 does not
have an ac adapter. Would the one from the 3400c work? Also, would it be a
stupid thing for me to try to put OSX on the 3400c with Xpostfacto? It has
80 mb ram, and a 4gb hd, and a 200mhz 603e. Thanks ~ Ben ~

Does anyone have a PB 1400 service manual JPEG they could e-mail to me? Can't seem to
find one by Googling and the links that someone provided don't work.

Thanks,
Spence

That's flat wrong.
Something else is interfering with DHCP resolution on your system,
it's not negotiation. negotiation is:

Server: at 100 mbit "You there?"
Apple: at 10 mbit "You there?"

No way:
now I can have the bong only by removing and re-seating the power board!
Just a bong and after a few seconds the click of the loudspeaker (the
same click that you hear when you plug the power cord.

The display and the HD do work on other 5300.

Should of course have read without the HD !
