2004-12-20 Thread Dale Hill
The year after the Berlin Wall came down, we had a East German Exchange student
in our house. She was wonderful.

What is ntgeo?

2004-12-20 Thread Dale Hill
Heck if I know. I am a hopeless insomniac, and happened to a documentary on
"Seconds To a Disaster." Suggestions, google it. The 1400 stars in it. The
seconds are the investigators and the guy who was nearly shredded by the metal
and a disbelieving train worker.

I guarantee you, that in the US, we don't have many trains that go 125 miles an
hour, and no passenger trains in Oklahoma. I was stunned not only by the
accident, and the carnage. Germany gave victims 19,000 each. One of Oklahoma's
congressman just paid 2 million to a family for running into their son's car
and pushing it out in front of a truck. We call it "tort reform." The
right-wingers controlling the US, wants us to be like Germany and not have to
pay-up when a company screws up. Heck, I think, at this point, Bush owes
thousands of American families millions of dollars, but the red states, which I
am in, don't see it that way. I voted for Al Sharpton anyway. :)

I guess if you don't have a satellite, you won't get it, but it seems to me,
that, since the train accident and investigation occured in Germany, ... ah,
you've already should have seen it. Happened in the 90's.

Re: PB1400 battery rebuild

Listers,
A couple of years ago or so someone posted a very nice description of how to
recell/rebuild a PB1400 battery. It included common problems/issues,
possible sources for the cells in both the US and Canada and a "what not to
do" note. It was both a description in the body of an email and archived as
a PDF file -- unfortunately I've lost it.
Can someone point me to it or at least something similar?

Sorry folks. Didn't mean to step on toes. It was all meant in fun
now. I was not aware of a major train wreck etc. What struck me as
funny was the assumption we could all see it. As I still think most
listers are on this side of the pond.

Also although I have a 1400 right here I don't think I would
recognize one in a movie.

And as for Germany, I love the beer and the writings of Goethe.

Sounds like National Geographic to me. There is a whole channel devoted to
NG, maybe just available on satellite.
Actually, I know three guys around me who have dishes which pick up a German
satellite network/station. The dish is pointed at the horizon and looks like
it won't pick up anything but they seem to get it just fine. I'm in Toronto,
btw.

Well,

Easy now. I wish that Germany be better visible in the US. Unfortunately as
with most other non-US nations it is not so much as a nuisance to most
Americans when it comes to the Iraq war and little is known about it beyond
its Nazi history (Yes, there are Americans who know/care more, but their
numbers are limited). And yes there was information about the ICE desaster
when it happened, but I have not heard of any movie documenting it and, not
to sound cocky: I am a _German_ citizen living in the US and I do watch
DW-TV on occasion.

So: If you are mentioning Powerbook sightings in international movies or on

Re: 1400 Spotted

2004-12-20 Thread Brian Mahoney
I don't see anywhere in the listings where only those west of the pond can
join this group. Besides, it was the disaster that was in Germany, I would
guess the show was shown in North America. Thanks Dale for the heads up.
Always fun to spot Macs in real world scenarios.

Sounds like something's not quite in order...

Do you think I should backup that volume and reinitialize?

Definitely! First thing I'd do after recovering the volume is back it
up, and reformat. Form the sounds of it, you have bad sectors on the
disk.Norton's recovered the directory entries, but obviously at least
some of the files are hosed.

I'd start thinking about replacing the removable disk, too.

HFS+ makes HFS files disappear?

2004-12-20 Thread gevangasteren
So normally, I should be able to use the removable on both platforms
without damaging the directory?

Thanks for the tip, Bruce! Disk First Aid couldn't repair it, but an old
copy of Norton Utilities did. (I don't have Disk Warrior.)
However, I don't feel completely safe yet: When the directory was
damaged, one of the volumes on the removable had also lost its custom
icon. So, after Norton had revived all folders, I wanted to finish off
the job by putting back the custom icon. But when I tried to paste the
custom icon on the volume in the GetInfo dialog box, this message showed
up: "The command could not be completed, because it could not be found."
