Re: XPostFacto

2005-04-26 Thread pasha
well, now it seems the kanga won't boot from the 10.3 disc
10.2 was nice that is worked with the wireless, but 10.3 is nicer.
*sigh* I want kanga to recognize some old card that I know it has not
before, never did until I put 10.3 on it, lost it when I went to
10.2.8, I can't get it to recognize the pcmcia card...

heh.. I have plenty of machines to run X, but I want a few more. I
guess these 20th anniversary's won't run with X, even though it would
be nice. OH YEAH the kanga sometimes freezes in 10.. like the mouse
will stop moving...

For me your question was pretty clear and straightforward... Probably
being not mother tongue I need to read more carefully...

BTW. I assume that Ryan Rempel (the creator of XPF) is a wise guy: I
wish the same apple was more realistic in its adds, but this is
another story...

For instance I have used XPF on my 7600 with either G3 and G4
processors without a single problem that the read me stated. Video,
voodoo 3dfx, SCSI devices, even the FW and USB cards were recognized.

The only thing was the lack of internal floppy support, but this is an
OS X feature (let's put it in this way...).

So keep experimenting... gone are the times when ONE single extension,
or a preference file made the difference... yesterday I installed the
scanner driver on my PowerBook G4 and I learnt that the installer put
more than 8 thousands files on the Mac HD. Is it still correct to
refer to 8000 files simply as driver? But this is OT.

The thing is that the Mac OS X universe is a whole new thing, even
more holistic than before.

Wireless and my 1400

2005-04-26 Thread Gary Zamzow
Dear Group,
I found a nice 1400C, and I would like to get a wireless card for it.
If I have a wireless card can I go to a Starbucks and open up my
browser and surf,
or do I have to to access via my ISP, which is Comcast, which I use
with my iMac at home?

I also want to get a wireless system at home and use my 1400 to go
on-line, but Comcast
said that the minimum system requirements are OS 9.0, and 128 MB of
memory.
My 1400 has OS 8.6, with a 250MHz G3 processor and 48 MB of memory.
I guess that I can try to push it.

When I get a wireless system at home can a visiting friend access my
home wireless just
like they would in a cafe, or would they have to have the Comcast
Install Wizard on their machines?

I contacted Comcast, and they sent me some links that indicated that
they could set up a system for
me, and that there would be a charge for additional computers, which
could add up if one had several
old computers or several old friends with computers, that is, if I'm
interpreting the information correctly.

I guess that my question is: What do I need to do to go wireless at the
cafes;
and if anyone has experience with Comcast, what do I need to do to go
wireless at home?

Thank you much for any information.

Hi Gary,
Starbucks have their own network. You buy access from the cashier who
will give you an access code and password on a card. When you open
your PB, it should ask you if you want to join the Starbucks network.
You click OK which will take you to the login page of the ISP they use.
Scrape the two black patches off the back of the card which should
give you the user ID code and the password. Enter these and you should
be connected.

Here in Thailand, Starbucks charges about US$3.75 for one hour - very
expensive.

Wow Roger.
That was a fast reply. I got your reply message almost as fast as I got
my original message.
And thank you for the clear information. I'm going to try it now that I
know how it works.
One would think that for a $5.00 Latte; Starbucks could provide
courtesy internet service for an hour.

Take care.

2005-04-26 Thread Dave Foshee
The problem with that is that many mobile businessmen would live in
Starbucks and suck the bandwidth all day. x5 and you have a lot of
bandwidth. Go to a busy Starbucks and everyone would be better on dial-up.

But this way, they can charge you and you are a captive audience. They could
afford it but why, when they can charge you for it?

Ah, Capitalism.

There are several independent coffee houses here in my town which have
free WiFi access.
