I have 32meg chip RAM and RAM Charger as well which does a great job at
allocating program memory. It was RC which red-flagged that iCab 2.9.8 had
an Ran Out Of Memory problem. First time ever I saw that with any program
on my PB 190.

I don't really want to use IE but I've currently no choice what with this
iCab 2.9.8 memory bloating problem, and using IE (don't even get started
about Navigator) is no picnic between its slow pokey-ness and expired
certificates flying in your face (can anyone explain that??). What I can
really use, ironically, is an earlier 68040 iCab version which won't expire
and which didn't have these headaches.

Boy, thanks for the swift responses!!

Re: 1400 joys

I am trying to boot up my old 1400, in order to sell it, but am
having difficulty.
First of all is the power supply- it seems to be very finicky these
days, and if I move it, the computer loses power (batteries are
discharged since I haven't used them in quite some time). This
normal?

No, something inside is loose or there is a bad wire.

Second, and most important, the fact that the last few times I've
booted up everything seems to work fine, until the desktop is nearly
fully loaded, then the monitor shuts off. The rest of the computer
keeps running, and I can hear an error message pop up, though I have
no idea what it says. I noticed that the clock was off when I
loaded the 1400 earlier, could the PRAM be dead, and that's what's
causing this? It doesn't just blink off, it's more like the
computer is consciously shutting it down
Assuming I can get it running right again, I need to access the
laptop, is there anyway to do this from an OS X computer?

When the screen goes black adjust hhe brightness buttons on the side.
Someone said this indicates a bad PRAM battery.

Re: Seeking Browsers for PB 190

2005-06-27 Thread C. Scott Cupples
Sorry for the double post, but I saw where you posted the amount of RAM. My
mistake. Is that Virtual Memory, or actual RAM? Also, you can go into the Get
Info command, and set the amount of RAM it uses. It's command+I, if you don't
know. That's quite a bit on the 190, though, but I guess that OS8 requires
more ram than the paltry 4.5 megs that 7.5.2 uses, but that's just my limited
experience showing. I wish you the best in getting your 190 online, as I had
some major issues in the beginning that the fellow listers really helped me
with. Trust me on this one, you'll love having your PowerBook online. Then
again, this is coming from me, so, you know the point. PowerBook
online=happiness. That's all I'll say. Then again, I named my two favourite
computers, so I'm not exactly the best example. If you need any off-list
help, contact me, and I'll do my best to help.

Have fun, and may you never have any "Type 11" errors.

Well, here's my two cents worth. I really like iCab on my 190, but, for me,
it's the only option that works decently with 7.5.2, but that's me. I haven't
touched an OS 8 machine in years, so I really don't know what would be best,
but I'll tell you, right now, that I'd stay away from IE. That's just my two
cents, but the reason I went to Linux, and bought my 190 is to escape
Microsoft. Of course, Word 5.1a being the exception, but that's the only MS
product I trust to function properly. I know the bias shows, but that's just
me. You neglected to mention how much RAM you have in your 190. RAM, as you
probably know, is a precious resource in older PowerBooks, and with OS 8,
you're looking at a real RAM hog, considering the machine in question. I'd
try going to OS 7.5.5, or 7.6.1, before doing anything, but that's my two
cents.

Seeking Browsers for PB 190

2005-06-27 Thread James W. Greenidge

Greetings!

This is a shot in the dark toward you Mac mavens, but here goes:

I'm dusting off my old trusty cool (in many ways) 32meg OS 8.1 PowerBook
190 to sub for my toasty eMac during NYC's broiling non-A/C and brownout
days and I'm trying to install a decent browser. I've rounded up IE 4.01,
Netscape 4.08, and with high hopes iCab 2.9.8 -- a CUTTING EDGE! browser
for ancient 68040 machines -- Hallelujah!

However my bubble burst when I discovered that iCab starts gobbling memory
right out of the gate, and after a few minutes virtually jams my PB to a
standstill from hogging out my memory. Though I killed the load images
options and set the cache to zero, iCab keeps on swelling. My poor cousin
alternatives aren't much better; Netscape keeps slamming me with "expired
certificate" alerts every five pages I go, frustration and delay making it
almost unusable, and IE won't log into .Mac for the same balking
certificate reason. For right now I'm going with IE with a 350k disk cache
which helps crawl it along, but I sure wish I had a way to kill all these
certificate thingies or an older 68040 version of iCab which won't date
expire!

Any suggestions will be much appreciated!!

Re: pricing guidance/titaniums too fragile?

2005-06-27 Thread Bruce Johnson

On Jun 26, 2005, at 5:24 PM, jim justen wrote:

Hi All!

I asked this question a few days ago but phrased it rather badly---

Im looking at used PBS at places like Baucom and Wegenerwhats

despite

the much greater speed of Titaniums (not to mention screen size).

It is surprising, but I think its more of a function of the price of
the Titaniums going down faster, and there being a definite basement
to pricing in places like that. These are systems that still run the
latest OS, and so are quite salable.

On places like e-bay and the swap list, TiBooks do sell for more than
Pismos in general.

Ive been rather out of touch with the Mac world (spent some time on
the dark
side) and I wonder if Id be making a mistake buying the titanium.
There must
be a reason the Pismos/Lombards hold their value so well...are they
that

much better built?

You'll get people claiming so, but in my experience, this hasn't
proven the case. There are three main drawbacks to the titanium over
the Pismo:

1) Airport range is shorter. The titanium case limits the airport
range of the titanium, and some have a habit of having loose antenna
wires which really shortens it. This is fixable in a variety of
ways..the cheapest is dangling an external antenna out the side or
back. I've also seen neater solutions using antennae from external
cards.

2)The case picks up and shows dings and scratches a lot more.

3)No removable drive modules. Not really an issue unless you can't
find the appropriate drive in an external USB version.

One of the reasons I abandoned the Mac PB line was because all six
of my PBs

developed AC connector wobble. I resoldered many of these (lets see--a
PB190, a 5300, and a 3400) myself...but I got sick of that and
decided mac

was not really standing behind their products, and bailed.

Well, the AC connectors on the later series are significantly better
than those.

But I really want to run OSX so, I'd like to dive back in to macs!
Would it

be a mistake to buy a titanium?

Not in my opinion.
