I've seen FOUR Mac viruses.
Yep, I've done mac support since 1989, starting at college. We were badly hit by viruses from time to time under late OS 6 ( I think early 7), as you can imagine - loads of students all runnign their OS off floppies that they swapped more often than bedmates. . . weekly scans with disinfectant fixed it. Since then, I've been hit twice more. Once was only a couple of years ago, I think on 8.5 (or was it still 7.5.5? - which was pretty good really) . This was an evil ***er that lurked in your system and only trashed the HD if you booted at a certain time of a certain day of a certain month. Since then I've seen nothing.(Now on 9.1) I have a copy of Virex antivirus program (not norton, thank god) but not actually active and only ever run it about twice a year when I'm feeling paranoid! Re: IR file transfer on PB 190
Caleb, Even if the IR transfer won't work (it's doubtful), you have another option, one which I use all the time between my various Macs and my Windows machines. That option is StarGate, a shareware package which has both Mac (using System 7.1+) and Windows (3.1 and 95+ versions) applications. You only need a null-modem cable hooked between the machines. It's pretty neat; you have Incoming and Outgoing folders on each platform, and anything placed in the out folder on one platform gets transferred to the in folder on the other platform automatically when the programs are activated. Rob I'm going to get my dad's old Toshiba Satellite 325, and I'd like to know if there's any way possible to transfer files over IR to the Satellite from the 190, and vice versa. I fully intend on keeping the 190 as a travel machine, however, and I'd like to be able to share files without resorting to the floppy dance that I use when transferring files to and from my Linux machine. I also don't want to deal with the hassle of e-mailing files to myself, but I may have no choice. Help please. Caleb -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... You can still (AFAIK) legally copy (for your own use, eg: backup) most anything which doesn't have copy protection. Hmm, legally speaking, I wonder if copy protection includes MacroVision? AFAIK, it does. More and more, the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) [ * ] is being written to incorporate by reference certain proprietary standards as if these were Federal standards. The Feds are giving away the candy store to the owners of the proprietary software, without ever requiring the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) [ ** ] to do a sanity check on such software. In particular, I believe that CFR Part which refers to DCMA specifically states that Macrovision-encrypted data may not be altered to remove the Macrovision encryption. Hence, the rapid emergence of the usual Macrovision circumvention, the analog loophole, which I will not describe here for fear of persecution ;-) . I'm sure some already own DVD drives which are all-Region. I know I do. Came that way from Apple Computer as part of my WS-II/300. Later DVD drives which were provided with the very same computer were single-Region. Also, some DVD players may be made all-Region by simple manipulation of the remote control. This, even though the those players have affixed to their cases the Region 1 sticker, meaning the player is purportedly compatible ONLY with Region 1 DVDs. Finally, some DVD players may be made to output a Macrovision-free data stream. The precise techniques vary with the player, but these usually involve manipulation of the remote control, and alteration of the VIDEO menu of the player. Sometimes a hidden menu is involved. Some of the best DVD players are using a single-chip solution (plus a single FLASH chip and a single RAM chip) from a domestic source, which accomplishes all DVD player operations, including DVD drive control and data stream decoding. This chip has supposedly been blessed by the usual suspect intellectual property owners, hence its wide use in DVD players which feature progressive scan. Region and Macrovision hacks are well-known for players which use this chip. Lastly, some DVDs are being authored by intentionally including flawed sectors in order to foil one-to-one duplication, which should otherwise be completely legal, as this does NOT remove Macrovision encryption. A defective sector cannot be duplicated, right? But, one of the best known tools is capable of BOTH correcting those defective sectors, AND removing Macrovision encryption. Do you have an external scsi cdrom ? if so hook it up to the pb and start from that, you should be able to get all the system specs when booted to a cd so see if it has enough to put a bare system 7 on there.
